It is with great sadness that we’ve learned of the death of Eric Slocum, former KOMO 4 anchor/reporter and former KOMO Newsradio anchor.
Eric was a part of the KOMO-TV news team for 10 years and spent another six behind a KOMO Newsradio microphone. He left KOMO Newsradio in 2008 to write a memoir and concentrate on the poems that he so loved. In 1996, Eric wrote a moving book of poems called “New Words”, which was published with Fisher and Childrens’ Hospital to help raise money for childrens’ health care.

This is such a shock. He killed himself after suffering for years with depression. I worked with him at the Seattle Book Fair one year where he was pushing his poetry book. R.I.P.

So sad to see such a talent leave us in this way. He will be remembered just as KOMO-TV remembered him when he left the station...

Too much death this month...the two little Powell boys, the state trooper, the Olympic park ranger, the students in Ohio, Whitney, Taffy of course, and today, Eric Slocum and Davy Jones. I, for one, am ready for sunlight and flowers and the feeling of hope that spring brings.

Tatelman, his poetry book was called R.I.P.? A tragic warning sign, perhaps. Anyway, he was a solid teleprompter reader and took his TV make up well, and his human interest stories featuring underdogs who overcame adversity and got to run in the Ethel Merman one legged potato race charity runs were awe inspiring and terribly memorable. God rest, Good, Kind, Sir. As they say, it happens to the best of us, and it happens to the rest of us. But the broadcasters, especially the local TV ones, well, they seem more noble, somehow, more high definition, serving our community they way they do. May you trip the lights fantastic, Sir.

Eric was an amazing and generous guy. When my wife was home on maternity leave from KOMO he came over. She was going to proof read his poems as he was getting his manuscript together to send to publishers.
I cannot believe that big smile and out-going good nature is gone. As my good Irish Catholic mother would have said, "He was as big as life and twice as natural!"

I worked pretty closely with Eric for a bit getting the all news KOMO AM format off the ground. A class act gentleman. Sorry to hear this is how it ends for him.
