The severely puckered Seattle newshole shrank a little more last week.
KOMO radio has given up 24/hour live news and is playing re-runs of weekday talkers John Carlson and Ken Schram in the overnight.

But... says a commenter on the trade Radio-Info forum:
To be fair, KOMO does have on-air-ready producers, something many other news stations don't have. Still, it's bad enough that we have six hours of talk on a "news" station; now the bulk of the all-night shift is talk reruns, with some news being done by the producer/editors.
More austerity from Fisher for the radio sector which always sucks hind teat to teevee in corporate considerations.
KIRO gave up live & local overnight in 2008 when they fired the insufferable Bryan Styble. They nowovernight with the syndicated George Noory, while KTTH does a Laura Ingraham rehash (daily, 1-4a) and America's Morning News, (daily, 4-6a) a right-wing tilt on the previous day's headlines from the blarmy Washington Times.
Styble was a boring self promoting creep-Hoax to Hoax(Coast to coast) is a much more interesting program.I listen to Ken Scramme after listening to Dave/Luke on Kiro. Can't stand the weasel that comes on at noon @ Kiro

KIRO must be thinking this competition from KOMO just couldn't be any better for them.
Wonder if the old iron is in the coals warming up for yet another KOMO rebranding?

What are we going to do when it snows?

Dammit. This really sucks, because I listen to KOMO early in the morning on the weekends because I don't want to listen to the colon cleanse commercials on KPTK.
Speaking of KPTK, I've just about had it with them. First we had to suffer through preemptions of the Randi Rhodes show for Storm Basketball, now we have to suffer through the preemptions for the T-birds.
Aren't there already a glut of sports stations in Seattle? No wonder AM 1090 doesn't do well -- they chase us away with their BS.

KIRO reigns!!! and Dori rules! KOMO is in a state of indecisive disarray.

yeah well, KIRO doesn't report stuff like they used to. I have a friend at Seattle city hall, another on the police force, and they say KIRO doesn't send people to any stories now, they just steal stuff from other stations. Sounds like tuff times all around. And, no news at nite, just rehash of Coast-to-Coast over and over and over. its boring.

KPTK has Bill Press live 3-6 a.m.
As for KOMO, we are talking about overnight when, unless there is a big fire, there is not much local news and listening isn't even monitored by Arbiton.

Phil Hendrie will be back in the market soon!

Sure they do, Mondays thru Fridays. I am talking about the weekends, the same time that KOMO is doing reruns of Carlson and Schram. It's just that I need something live and interesting as I lay awake in the early mornings. KOMO was my backup plan for the weekend mornings. Now it might as well be the colon cleanse infomercials.

For the record, KOMO has been doing the Schram/Carlson replays for a lot longer than just a week.......
Posted by: Werlini | October 19, 2011 at 08:53 PM
@Werlini - absolutely correct. Been more like a month now. But since the Seattle R-I board is populated by mostly has-beens, wannabes and never-wills they can't be bothered to discuss what's happening TODAY in Seattle radio.
And it IS a shame that they dropped live overnight news. Fact is, Fisher hasn't had a competent radio programmer in the building since Paul Duckworth was unceremoniously shown the door.

I bet you that KOMO will cut back on all-news coverage by limiting it to Morning & Afternoon Drive & start going back to talk.

I am really upset about this. I used to listen to the live news all night long and now it's gone. How can you be a news station when you take away the news? They sure haven't taken away that dang K-A-R-S Kars for Kids ad. Maybe we can raise more money than the ad costs and pay them NOT to play it?! That is the most annoying advertisement EVER! But then, I guess since I won't be listening anymore, I won't have to worry about it.

If KOMO went back to airing talk shows, they need to add the following shows & hosts:

Kim Komando
At Home with Gary Sullivan
The C.A.R. Show
Cigar Dave
ABC Perspective
ABC's This Week(The audio portion of the TV program)
