I hated the "leadership" retreat in palm springs. It was filled with loser kids who are all peppy about getting nothing done. they'll sit and cheer and clap and try to motivate each other. it was pathetic.
the facilitators preached socialism and told us that only white people can be racist. i didn't speak the entire three days i was there. well i did say "i wasn't listening" when the facilitator asked me a question. it was such a fucking joke. [Occidental College] is such a fucking socialism peddling cunt. it's all about brainwashing students and anyone buys into the nonsense of only whites can be racist, should be murdered in their sleep by a santa suit wearing fat man.[...] ~~ Jason Antebi, LiveJournal entry after an Occidental College Leadership Retreat
He was a big, fat "get," we hear, by new KIROFM PD Larry Giffords. But big, fat "gets" don't usually have pasts that are this dodgie.
Jason Atebi, 29, is the new Ass't Program Director for KIROFM and KTTH. He started this week.
His on-air personna is "Jason Rantz;" who's produced for Phil Hendrie and others in a radio career he claims started when he was 16 years old.
As a conservative and a self-described smart-ass, he's written, according to his resumé, for Reader's Digest, Human Events, Newsbusters, HITS Magazine, SPIN, Radar Online, Green Living Magazine, Politically Illustrated, and the anti-Muslim, neoconservative, Christian Zionist Family Security Matters.
His show frequently mocked Occidental's administration, student government, as well as a wide-range of political and social causes. His attorney described his show thus:
Jason Antebi’s show, like many college radio shows, was intentionally obnoxious—that was why it was named Rant and Rave. The targets of Antebi’s on-air mockery included whites, alcoholics, drug users, “straight-edges,” his cohost, his former cohost, Mormons, Christians, Jews, Jehovah’s Witnesses, doctors, lawyers, Democrats, Republicans, feminists, “hippies,” the Christian Right, Alan Colmes, Greta Van Susteren, Bill O’Reilly, Al Franken, campus safety officers, women, men, children, space aliens, Star Trek fans, Star Wars fans, Matrix fans, porn actors, people who don’t own Diesel shoes, people who wear socks with sandals, short people, tall people, fat people, skinny people, “web nerds,” TV characters, KOXY management, and even himself. Far from being targeted discrimination, the “rant” aspect of Rant and Rave was often quite indiscriminate. The very fact that the both men and women complained about Antebi’s show demonstrates that the offensiveness was more general. Antebi was, to borrow a hackneyed phrase, “an equal opportunity offender.”
His on-air satire, prompted three students to file sexual harassment complaints against him, claiming that his show promoted "disrespect and slander" and thus constituted a form of punishable "hostile environment" harassment.
The school fired Antebi from the show, and he recruited Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) who wrote a letter condemning the college and pointed out that his speech was clearly protected under the First Amendment.
The school's attorney responded with a letter that, according to his FIRE lawyer, "flatly distorted and misrepresented facts and implied, without a shred of evidence, that Antebi had committed a variety of serious offenses including vandalizing cars and making harassing phone calls."
Stunningly, the big-footed school dissolved the student government (of which Antebi was a vice president) then found Antebi guilty of "sexual and gender hostile environment harassment."
The young conservative then sued the college for violating his free speech rights. And with the help of his new-found friends at FIRE and the ACLU, they settled out of court, with Antebi gleefully declaring, "I am very happy with the outcome."
Never in question were Jason's blessed First Amendment rights to use the derisive language and extreme tones used on-air, and in public utterances. But there's no question that he used the language and demonstrated the immaturity, meanspiritedness, and incivility. The descriptions of the derisive and devisive state of his tenure in student government described in the legal documents shows he seemed singlehandedly to make the environment chaotic and poisonous.
But his First Amendment victory (won by civil liberals on his behalf) made him a little famous in right-wing circles.
At one point, students led by some members of the school's Women's Center tried to recall him, but powered by his position as chair of the student Senate, he was procedurally able to head off the petition and prevent the vote from going to the student body.
We certainly hope never to get on Jason's bad side- seems he's into the pay-back/bitch equation. Here's a letter he wrote to a girl friend who'd dumped him (also public on his LiveJournal page):
A promise to those who have wronged me, who still read this because they r fucking pathetic flamers
What goes around, comes around. Don't you forget that you only get what you give. You know I'm talkign to you. I know you read this. I know your friends do too. Trust me when I say everything you have brought upon me will be delivered back to you with a vengenace never to be seen by anyone who knows me, and they could all attest to how fucking bad i get back at people who have wronged me. this will be worse.
i promise you.
And... the whole school knows about you.
Can't wait to see what he will bring to programming to KIROFM and KTTH. He would fit best with latter, though there's not much programming going on over there: it's all Rush and Beck and Hannity, with lovable, local reactionary drone, Dave Boze (m-f, 3-4p) squeezed-in for an hour in the afternoon.
Doubt there'll be many Democrats, or liberal programming goin' on over at Bonneville's Seattle talk cluster: here's what he wrote just a year a ago:
When liberals say ‘Diversity:’ “I support diversity! I love diversity!”
What they mean: “I’m white and I hate myself. I need to surround myself with a diverse group of people but not because I seek to learn different cultures or understand different perspectives. I need these people because it assuages my white guilt. I feel non-whites are particularly stupid so I pretend to give them advantages and pretend to ‘understand’ where they’re coming from, so that they can support liberal politicians, who, in turn, will pretend to help them but actually hold them back. As a liberal, I don’t think non-whites are equal to me—I just pretend to think that.”
Maybe he can make Dave Boze meaner or John Curley more political; maybe he'll bring back Peter Weissbach. Is mean the new black? Seems funny that Bonneville, who gives lip service to all that civility 'n' shit would make such a mangement hire.
Us diverse Seattleites can thank The Goddess that Jason Antebi ain't on the air.
Here's more than you'll ever need to know about this up-& comer: his triumphant legal case against Occidental; his Human Events pieces; 'friend' or 'like' him here.
Feel better, gollum?
