Darryl

Gosh...what's with all the Halloween makeup?

And what is that in her left hand? It looks like some kind of archaic foam applicator, all loaded and ready to go....

Rat_Bastard

Damned if she did...
Damned if she didn't.

Mike Barer

The Right would say "there you go again" lmho

Radio Queen

Whether or not you like her politics (I don't), intentionally degrading females like this is not o.k. Let her words speak for themselves.

StarTheWonderDog

RQ, just shows that there's a bit of fear in the 'ol liberal air. Very childish, but cheap shots like this are expected from the side of zero ideas.

South Tacoma

Is it worse to get a little head from her or to continue getting fucked by Obama?
I'd vote for a little scull.

Pete

It's a pretty good rule for male candidates, too. Or female candidates' anti-gay husbands.

That photo has been all over Twitter. It doesn't take much imagination, or either a liberal or conservative bias, to see what a potential nightmare this photo could be for someone already struggling to be treated with the "gravitas" of a leading presidential contender. As someone who's worked on campaigns, whoever's doing her communications work should be fired for even letting her be photographed in that moment.

And Newsweek should be ashamed. Really. Seriously. They knew exactly what they were doing. I'm no fan of Ms. Bachmann, but given her politics I can't imagine she or her people thought this was a good idea.

Ridiculing Bachmann over this photo isn't particularly a liberal thing. (They've been ridiculing her anyway.) Most of it's coming from people who don't much follow politics, but think photos of powerful people putting cylindrical objects in their mouths are funny.

Pete

Off topic, but this is a political blog: if you haven't done so already, vote today! In Seattle there's city and county council races and the tunnel referendum. Now that our primaries are in the dead of summer turnout is often very low, so your vote makes even more of a difference.

Pete

Turns out Marcus (Michelle's husband) and Rick Perry were both also photographed fellating corn dogs. The many other presidential hopefuls at Ames had the good sense not to eat them in public.

Radio Queen

So, Pete...it's her fault for being stupid enough to eat common fair food? Really? Good gawd...that's akin to blaming a rape victim for dressing provocatively. The issue isn't who's ridiculing the photo, it's the fact that it was very intentionally published with an agenda in the first place. You've had some excellent comments on racism, but haven't yet exited the locker room when it comes to exploiting women. BTW, I think the header was added by Hood. I suspect even Newsweek has its limits...

chance

I'm a liberal, and I have a fear alright - that the GOP WON"T nominate Ms Bachmann.

StarTheWonderDog

Will look for your follow up comment on Nov 7, 2012. Should be interesting if you are brave enough to show up.

TeaPower

Call me cynical but I think this is a grasp at attention. Take a look at her ‘foam applicator’. It’s a Sharpie, hence signatures’ and photos. Look at what she got in return, her name has gone viral and she has become the victim of a liberal conspiracy.

Dr. McCormick

ick Perry...the hag laughs at him....yeah he's a bornagain, but he loves America and likes white people. Compare that to Obama. Two out of three ain't bad . Not saying i support Perry yet, just observing him, without being a bigot about him and pre-judging, like Joanie does. If he can get the jobs and economy going , that's the main thing at this point. People will have to set aside some things they would wish for normally in their candidate and settle for who is avaiable, and can beat Obama in desperate times liek these.

Sarah

Likely in the thoughts of the good ol boys of this blog, "gawd in more than one way, I wish that was me". haha

Pete

RQ: No, that really was the Newsweek cover. Newsweek has come in for a ton of criticism for it, and rightly so.

And I wasn't blaming Bachmann. She has people to worry about that sort of thing for her; a presidential candidate has far too much on her or his plate to be concerned about those sorts of details. That's why I criticized her communications people, not her. You'll note that most of the other candidates given corn dogs managed to avoid the incriminating pose. That's a combination of campaign experience and paid advice.

I'm happy to call sexism when I see it, but I don't see it here (unless any attack on a female political figure is motivated by gender, which certainly some Clintonistas seemed to believe.) For a party that's virulently anti-gay, the same image for a guy is just as suggestive, maybe more. But Rick Perry didn't win Ames, and the shot of him sucking corn dog wasn't put on the cover of Newsweek. Maybe next week.

Pete

Oh, and I take mild issue with your characterization of corn dogs as "food"... (smile)

Mike Barer

This is much ado about nothing. It's good natured humor and it won't sway the election either way.
The fact that we think that way says more about us than it does about the picture.

Ray

Everyone wants to label everybody else. Some one attacks Michelle Bachman and is a liberal or too far to the right.

Get rid of the labels and look at the actions of the individual. When you do keep one thing in mind:

There is no cure for stupid.

Sarah

Yes look at how astute the individual is and if that individual asks the crowd she's speaking to to all sing happy birthday today to Elvis on the anniversary of his birth when in fact it is the anniversary OF HIS DEATH, consider THAT before labeling or more importantly VOTING for that person. Haha

Dr. McCormick

i' d like to know mor about these flash mobs...the recently publicized one was in philadelphia where 50 or so or even more black young people all assembled on a street corner and began assaulting "people". was it really "people", news media, or was it white "people?.......

StarTheWonderDog

Off topic Tommy get with it.

Monteray Bay

The picture, and that of Mr. Bachmann and Perry are real, the Newsweek cover is a joke. Some of you are unbelievably dense.

Mike D

"intentionally degrading females like this is not o.k."

I agree. Whoever forced her to eat a corndog in front of cameras should be put in jail. It's giving me nightmares.

chucks

The big problem is as stated above, her staff was not on their toes. If she doesn't think in terms of sucking cock but rather in terms of eating common fair food, that makes her normal. Really now, how many of us have eaten a corn dog and not thought of it in a sexual nature.
I'll bet this crap is killing corn dog sales at fairs around the nation. People are going to lose their jobs. Thanks Newsweek.

KS blathers for the halibut

Everyone's waiting for the pic of Rick Perry eating one of those. Can't trust anyone with cell phones any more and Photo Shop makes anything possible.

joanie

And Newsweek should be ashamed.

Why should Newsweek be ashamed? It's a joke cover. They're not responsible for it. And nobody is really paying attention to the picture except some geeks who cruise the net and they're probably mostly pre-teen and don't vote.

I agree with The Queen generally on this and I think it is just more misogyny on the part of an awful lot of little boys in their fifties and sixties. We saw it with Hilary and we'll see it with every female candidate until a generation of old white men die.

Chux, you have a problem and need to see a psychiatrist. Honestly.

KS blathers for the halibut

Joanie - being sanctimonious again.

Ray

Seriously! She may be popular, but with all the mistakes she consistently makes is she TRUST WORTHY?

If she makes a mistake about Elvis' birthday and then has to apologize, that is not trust worthy.

A truly professional, principled person would get it right the first time and not have to apologize.

Seriously, is anyone paying attention to her actions or are we so much in shock that we will swallow any kind of hype and tolerate any kind of stupid mistake she and most of the other Republican candidates make?

Come on, wake up!

joanie

I agree that we should be looking at facts. But asking these conservatives to wake up? Now, that might be asking too much.

The Wisconsin dems whose recall elections were today seem to be holding their ground rather strongly.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/127831843.html

joanie

That's a pretty big word for you, KS. You know what it means?

excessive moderate

When a woman’s eyes roll back in her head as she accepts the foot long…well, you know.

joanie

How do you know, EM, that it is not photoshopped?

excessive moderate

Good point…

Monteray Bay

The only thing photoshopped is the Newsweek header. I take it you have not seen the picture of her teasing her husband with the hotdog and he has a big smile on his face. This photo went viral over the weekend, and other shots were taken of the same thing only from different angles.

Dr. McCormick

the hag laughed at Rick Perry- and her parrots laughed at Rick too...well he may be a Texan but he's popular ......if they think theyre better than him, theyre wrong.......compare Perry to Obama-.... Perry is a bornagain, he loves his country and he likes white people. Hey two out of three ain't bad.

Mike D

Look how easy it is to fool rightwingers. All you have to do is slap a hastily cropped Newsweek gif on an image and they think it's real. They make no effort to think beyond what's placed in front of them. Kinda gives some insight into how the GOP does what it does.

joanie

You an underage geek, Monteray? BTW, you've never been to Monterey Bay or you'd know how to spell it.

Doesn't change the fact that it could be photshopped. A lesson in photoshopping: you start with a photo and change it or them.

Tell me, Monteray Bay, what kind of people care about Michele Bachmann eating a corn dog? I'm curious.

Pete

RQ and others, I stand corrected, and apologize. The controversial Newsweek cover that made her look bad was a different shot, not involving a corn dog but still a conscious effort to influence people's perceptions of Bachmann. Which should not be the role of cover art in a newsweekly.

And I'll also stand corrected on the misogyny. I've talked with several women today who felt the same way, that Bachmann was singled out on this because of gender, so I'll defer to their (and RQ's) opinions. The photos of Perry eating corn dog at the same event are out there, but they haven't gone viral. And since I was wrong about this being on the Newsweek cover, clearly the fact that they've gone viral is some combination of her gender and that people on the left have had more time to get good and worked up about how extreme and ridicule-worthy Bachmann is. They haven't focused so much on Rick Perry yet.

Perry will have his moment soon enough. He's got a long record in Texas of shooting his mouth off without engaging his brain first, and it will land him in the news in very short order. Count on it.

Persident Perry- get used to it

Perry has alerady started making rough statement, riling up the "hag" types on msnbc, but the American people arent really goign to care about that crap this time around, withthe dire situation were in,unless Perry really says something thats totally a gamechanger, and i dont believe he will. he'll tone it down once he gets the nomonation. folks, unless Obama can turn the economy around in 14 months, we are now looking at President Perry. The hag and her parrots will just have to grin and bear it.

Persident Perry- get used to it

why do i say this, you may well ask? its very simple. With Bachmann effectively taking herself out of the race, it is now down to Perry and Romney. With the heavy tea party factor this go round, Romney will not beat Perry. CAN YOU IMAGINE THREE DEBATES BETWEEN OBAMA AND PERRY? perry will expose Obama for the fool and charlatan he is- he'll make the stark contrast. On the right side of your screen is a man who actually loves his country and actually likes white people. On the left side of your screen is - Mr. Arrogance, B.O.

joanie

I don't care what they say about Perry or what they said about Bush. It won't and it didn't come down to sex or attractiveness. But it always does with women. Hilary's ankles were too thick, remember?

As for Perry, the Al Gore Democrat turned Republican, he's an opportunist whose patriotic gibberish will only fool rightwingers who vote emotionally anyway. And there's a lot of them. Eight years of the Bush debacle didn't teach them a thing.

BTW, Karl Rove doesn't like him. We'll see who wins. In my opinion, either way, we're screwed.

joanie

...and that people on the left have had more time...

How do you know it's "people on the left?" You make a lot of assumptions.

Don't Mess in Texas- It already is a mess...

Let's look at what Perry can bring to the debate

Texas unemployment 8%.

His neighboring states of Oklahoma 5% and Louisiana 7% and 23 other states are doing better.

Also, his self-touted record of job growth is essentially the same as Democratic Gov. Ann Richards produced and far lower than what Texas had under George W.'s governorship.

Texas has the highest worker fatality rate and the least funded workman's comp.

Meanwhile, the Miracle Man has dug Texas into one of the deepest budget holes in the country — $27 billion short of the money needed to cover the same miserly level of state services Texans now get. Although his party controls the state Senate and has a supermajority in the House, he was unable even to get a budget passed in the regular legislative session, forcing him to convene a costly special session.

Toward the end of George W.'s right-wing presidency, national columnist and Texas icon Molly Ivins wrote, "Next time I tell you someone from Texas should not be elected president of the United States, please pay attention."

On the 'assumptions' front, looks like just today you made a boatload of em. You are quite the useful tool, Joanie as an illustration of parody. Only white men are misogynist, right wringers vote on emotion, Monteray is underage, etc etc etc.

Pot meet Kettle. LMAO

Sarah

I think it's only appropriate to ask Rick Perry at this point to provide a genuine certified copy of his original birth certificate. After all his roots are apparently close to Mexico and just because he was yell king at Texas A&M doesn't say anything about his birth place. Suspect were his comments about seceding from US some time ago, could have wanted to return Texas to his home country? We might as well get any speculation off the table now and not have it surface further down the road. So, Mr potential President we need to see your original birth certificate, your little foot and finger prints, witness's at birth's names, addresses and SSN numbers, DNA of you and your parents and a record of all your grades through school and the lyrics to every yell song you ever sang. Only then will we agree that you MAY be qualified for this run for President.
Hey, only fair right?

As usual, spewgit, you miscomprehend: where did I say "only" white men are misogyist? The "underage geek" was a question not a statement. And how else do you explain the unquestionable tendency of rightwingers to vote for idiots?

Every time you post, spewgit, you provide more and more evidence that you are an unintelligent idiot. Keep counting beans, it suits you.

BTW, only for you because you obviously need to be reminded what you post will I repost everything you repost. That should take up a whole lotta bandwidth. But I can accommodate stupid people.

joanie

I like it, Sarah. But, he's a white man who wears French cuffs and cowboy boots so I guess that gives him a pass. Hmmm, well, maybe the French cuffs might be suspicious? How about it, KS? You gonna vote for a man who wears French cuffs?

fremont

Thank you, Pete, for your corrections and apology, an amazing phenomenon seldom (perhaps never) practiced by posters on this blog....a lesson in civility.

I'm with you, Sarah! Cough it up, Perry!
