It's a given that John Curley (KIRO m-f, 7-10p) doesn't take his new evening radio show very seriously.
(image: "gravitas-ing up"- the blonde is nearly gone)
Not only does it conflict with his charity auction business, it collides twice a month with regular Sammamish City Council meetings which occur on first Tuesdays and third Mondays at 6:30p. What's more, Council member office hours are third Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30p. He's a Councilman, and that's quite a commitment for someone who's supposed to be on the air weekdays at 7p...
There's more floating around about Curley's intentions: "He's gonna run for a higher office," says a grumpy KIROFM staffer. "He's using KIRO as a stepping stone."
That's blaring political tea leaves to brilliant analysts such as us.
If you know anything about politics (as we so thoroughly do) you know about this sort of tonsorial transition: It's the uber-blonde of mid-life crisis males to the silver-gray of the maturing politician. The "gray-over" is a classic tactic in gravitas-ing up a fluffy new candidate.
In the photo above you can see Curley's blonde yielding to gray, the work of a political hairdresser. (Yes, certain hairdressers specialize in candidate makeovers. It is said that Rudy Giuliani's comb-over removal and re-style was done hair by hair over a 3-month period at a cost of a quarter of a million dollars. There are many examples: like the magnificent silver helmet of right-wing, former radio talker, and presidential hopeful, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Mars).
(Image: Mike Pence is a 'full circle' blonde-to-silver)
Curley entered politics rather cavalierly. He was elected in November despite he'd never previously attended council meetings and nobody could remember seeing him around City Hall.
The Sammamish Review dug up that he'd voted in only three of the last 12 elections. Most were primaries and special elections - but two of the elections he missed were general elections.
Curley made no explanations for not voting, and his excuse for not attending meetings or familiarizing himself with the body he was to run for was downright lame:
“He wouldn’t have been able to run for office. He wouldn’t have been able to be proactive in any election or take a position on any issue,” Costello said.
And oh yeah, Curley talks like a frat boy, but when did that ever hurt anyone in a Republican primary?
Both his new jobs - politics and radio - take real commitment. We're not sure Curley can hack both (or either one for that matter). Maybe he should just stick to calling auctions, and making self-aggrandizing YouTube vids.
The guy is a dork. He's lucky his grandfather pooped him a ton of money otherwise he'd be living in a trailer home down in Fife.

Tammy kkk seems to hate and obsess on Curley along with Monson.
Joanie called it before, Tammy kkk is just a little man who I've bit in the arse before with facts.
And you don't want to know what I've down to the hubcaps of that rattily old Jag of his.

Yes... But can Curley prove that he was born in this country and that he isn't a Muslim?
Posted by: Rat_Bastard | March 30, 2011 at 04:12 PM
Does anybody care? He's a baaad talker.
Posted by: The Anti-Dori | March 30, 2011 at 04:16 PM
John Curley is an extremely talented host who is quick and witty. That he might aspire to political office is a bonus for his constituency. He has made a ton of money and he has managed it wisely thus he doesn't really need an income. He will be a completely objective and pragmatic office holder. This area is very fortunate to have a person of his character, and anything he gives KIRO and it's listeners is icing on the proverbial cake. Those herein who are want to criticize him are simply jealous.

TT writes

It's all family money douche bag. The guy has never been successful at anything. A sitcom in the 80's was written about him called Silverspoon.
Posted by: Truth | March 30, 2011 at 05:07 PM
From Curley's bio..."His gift of gab took him from selling bedpans and other glamorous medical devices to the wonderful world of Television. With no formal training...hired as a weatherman in Grand Junction Colorado...hired in Champaign, Illinois, at WCIA TV...other stops along the career track include Lancaster, PA; Springfield, VA; and Washington D.C...Emmy for weather in 1993 and for interviewing and hosting in 1994...Zenith of his career in 1995 when he was hired for Evening Magazine.
Doesn't sound much like a "silver spoon" background to me...
Posted by: Radio Queen | March 30, 2011 at 05:25 PM
Sounds like a dilettante - hardly hard work. And weather? That's the perfect spot of a dilettante. Everybody loves a charming weather person. That's not rocket science, RQ. Surprised you couldn't figure that one out. Wouldn't you like to dally with the TV crowd? That does take some sophistication. I suppose a rich brat would have that.
Posted by: The Anti-Dori | March 30, 2011 at 06:20 PM
If you told me Curley fell into money and didn't earn his way up from the bottom, I'd believe you. His political views are too simplistic to have come from someone who has cogitated a path to success. If you're successful, you either have highly informed opinions, or you realize you don't know enough to have an opinion at all. Curley is neither these things. "Dilettante" is a perfect adjective for Curley. His opinions on anything and everything are the very essence of "dabbling". He thinks a little about this and has a little opinion on that, then he just giggles to himself, knowing those thoughts and words carry about as much weight as a child's party baloon.
Having said that, he has a lot of confidence, and people don't appreciate that. Wimpy people are jelous of go-getters who dive in head first without fear of failure and humiliation. Curley eats failure for lunch. It makes him stronger. Confidence is what makes stupid people better than you.
Posted by: Andrew | March 30, 2011 at 06:41 PM
What I am scratching my head over is how Curley can have a talk show and hold a political office? Any on-air host (John Carlson, for example) has to step down in order to run for office. Yes, Curley is just a city council member, BUT...he has an unfair advantage of spreading his political views to the people of Sammamish, where his fellow council members do NOT have that opportunity. If he chooses to run for re-election, he will have to give equal time to anyone who is running against him. But clearly, he has a platform to sway his constituents every night--well, 4 nights a w---make that 3, 3 nights a wee---, OK, TWO nights a week! Make that TWO nights a week!
Posted by: JimF | March 30, 2011 at 06:54 PM
Eats failure for lunch?- Hah...I got news... the guy stayed 15 years as head shmuck on a Shmucky local magazine show. Not quite as bad as fellow loser Gene Simmons, who still walks around in that gimmicky, stinky Kabuki suit. Curley would have parlayed the success at Evening Magazine into something bigger and better after 5 years max, if he was the real deal. Your bernie knows a schmuck when he sees one, I got news.
Posted by: your Bernie from Brooklyn | March 30, 2011 at 06:57 PM
Not only that, Bernie, but it is easy to have "confidence?" when you got money to fall back on. I don't call it "confidence." Arrogance is more like it. He doesn't care. If you got nothing to lose, go for it.
Posted by: joanie | March 30, 2011 at 07:37 PM
I'd really like to know where y'all get your facts. Someone please prove that Curley comes from money. Guess that's easier to believe than to admit that he's just someone who worked his way up through the media markets, won a few awards along the way, and had a successful 15-year TV run.
Posted by: Radio Queen | March 30, 2011 at 07:49 PM
Confidence + stupidity + trust fund reminds me of someone. Does anyone remember our smiling chimp President?
Posted by: AprilMayJune | March 30, 2011 at 08:01 PM
There's nothing left on KIRO. I think the suits should think about total syndication. Or. . .let's bring back Pat Cashman. That was the best show on radio (except when Dori was on it).
Posted by: Morticia | March 30, 2011 at 08:27 PM
Confidence+intelligence+trust = Maddow. Just finished watching yesterday's show. Absolutely excellent. Not so much fluttery hands or silliness (which I don't like) but straight old-fashioned news. Lots about Wisconsin which has become invisible since Libya. Great show!
Posted by: joanie | March 30, 2011 at 08:59 PM
What's with the anger toward Curley having some money?
I don't know anything about that, but the political agenda is the perfect reason for him to get people to know more about his views via the talk radio world like Carlson and Ross...
Didn't work for either of them, but it does makes sense if that's where he's headed.
Posted by: Rat_Bastard | March 30, 2011 at 09:15 PM
joanie I have no idea why you're so bitter all the time, but it gets old. There are lots of well-off people, and they don't do what John Curley does.
But I don't even think this is the case. I checked, and I can at least tell that his house is worth no more than Monson's house, both are upper middle class at best, crowded amongst other middle class houses. Neither is indicative of someone who's independently wealthy. We don't know how much these people have in the bank, but people generally buy as much house as they can comfortably afford.
I don't think Curley has a political vision or agenda. My guess is that he just likes to be the center of attention, is good at it, and has made a decent living doing what he loves to do. He's a natural class clown.
And I think most people who run for elected office are in it for the title, the attention, the feeling of importance. They talk about "public service", but they aint out there picking up trash unless a camera man is nearby. The country is run by attention whores and the greedy businessmen who use them.
Posted by: Andrew | March 30, 2011 at 10:07 PM
JimF, I don't think KIRO has problem with Curley holding office and doing his radio show at the same time because his office is the equivalent of a pimple on a squirrel's ass. Curley and his fellow town councilmen talk about things like the stink problem down at the end of Elm Street being caused by Old Man Weems putrefying jars of urine sitting on his back porch. These are things that are not likely to come up as general interest topics on a mainstream local radio show.
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 30, 2011 at 11:16 PM
Andrew, so the price of one's house tells you how much money they have, where it came from, and that they're just a silly juvenile class clown? My, aren't you the brightest boy on the block.
My opinion of Curley comes from listening to him.
Posted by: joanie | March 31, 2011 at 07:57 AM
according to Wikipedia the city of Sammamish has 45, 0000 people , so its slighly bigger than i thought. Curley's position there is still the equivlent of a pimple on a squitrrel's ass. Come on, folks, if you read the statistics you see its a little gentrified playpen for well-off and wealthy white people. Perfect, died and gone to heaven stuff for a man like Curley. Whatever token blacks and "other" they happen to let in there are damn sure of the same economic class, believe that. from wikipedis- 85 % white.......median family income as of 2007 survey- $130,000
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 31, 2011 at 12:05 PM
sorry that's 45,000 with three 0's not four
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 31, 2011 at 12:08 PM
also from wiki....no 12 in per capita income rankings for the whole state....hmmm not too shabby John........85% white ,7% asian so basically 92% white or Asian..... way to go John.....4.5 % black....nice, John.............
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 31, 2011 at 12:21 PM
So, now Curley is a "racist" because he lives in Samammish?
What the Hell is going on here?
Wait, I know...
Liberals MUST interject race into every possible scenario.
Why?
Because they are racists!!!
I wonder if Dori and Curley are the same white robe size.
Posted by: Rat_Bastard | March 31, 2011 at 12:31 PM
compare Sammamish'es median family income of 130,000 with the MFI of Medina, Washington, home of Bill Gate. Medina's MFI is 149,000, only 19k above Curley's town......
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 31, 2011 at 12:33 PM
If Curley has a propblem with anything i've said or anything else said on this thread i challenge him to actually show up on his show tonight and take us on....come on , ya chimp,,, show up and take us on , ya Repug chimp........

"So, now Curley is a "racist" because he lives in Samammish?

Those are not my opinions, but those of Tommy008, as a Liberal, I can say that number one, Sammamish is a mixture of many different cultures. Number two, wikipedia is a good resourse, but I would not quote it as the gospel. It can be altered.
Now as far as John Curley, my guess is that he is on the Republican bench for either state legislature or the County Council, word has it that Jay Rodne, the 5th District House Member, may run for Attorney General. Also, Cheryl Pflug may finish law school and leave the State Senate. This would leave an open senate seat. The curveball is redistricting and there is no way to really tell how that will turn out.
Posted by: Mike Barer | March 31, 2011 at 01:31 PM
don't like wikipedia? fine.... City-Data .com has even more recent data........Sammamish is according to them, now 93% white and Asian, not the 92% per wiki, with whites down a bit and Asians up. however the number of blacks living there has now dropped to .8 %, less than one percent of the poopulation. Median household income, which is generally lower than median family income is now listed at 130,000 dollars a couple of thousand above the older, wiki data.
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 31, 2011 at 02:14 PM
as i said, .... a " thought i'd died and gone to heaven"....kind of place for a Repug like John to reside in.....
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 31, 2011 at 02:23 PM
My neighorhood breaks down to being 74% white and the rest various colors. You can tell that Mine is a nice diverse community by the gang graffetti on the different buildings and fences arround the community.
I suppose that the 6% that are asian by the biggots (Tommy008) standards would mean that it is 80% white and the rest of us are what is left over.
I really have no idea what the fuck this has to do with anything at all, let alone this Curley guy.
Posted by: South Tacoma Sunshine | March 31, 2011 at 02:29 PM
come on STC .....Asian professionals have been "honorary whites" in this society for a long time. What fortysomething white, Repug males really, REALLY like about the City of Sammamish is that .8% , tiny tiny, black population......
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 31, 2011 at 02:37 PM
@Tommy008: I take your point, but where do you draw the line? If Curely were to be elected to the KC Council, could he still have a radio show? What do they talk and discuss over there? Certainly bigger issues that Sammamish, however the point I was trying to raise is that Curley has a very distinct advantage over his other council-members: a platform to express his views to thousands of listeners, which include voters in his area.
In my little town, we have an old man who has been writing a column in the local rag for years now. (It's the only reason people pick up the paper---kind of like a old, angry Savage Love--the only thing people ready in The Stranger). But he ran for and was elected to the city council---yet, he continued to write his column about the issues of the day. I questioned the paper about this because it gave him an unfair advantage over his fellow council members who were at odds with him over issues critical to the city and they were not able to reach out to the same audience. I told the paper they woudl have to provide equal time to which they promptly blew me a raspberry. Other councilmembers I spoke with voiced the same concern that I had.
So, I understand--if you run for "public office," and you are a broadcaster, you should step down--just like every host has down when running for congress or governor. But a city councilman-ship is STILL a "public office." And Curley's fellow council members should confront him on this.
