Speaking of brave female reporters working in sexually repressed Muslim countries where a woman can get more than groped in the line of duty, Dorothy Parvaz is now in Iran working for Al Jazeera. This after covering the revolution in Egypt.
You remember her... she writes as D.Parvaz, was a reporter, columnist, and on the editorial board of the late Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and also appeared on a panel with other local reporters discussing the news Fridays on Weekday with Steve Scher. Dorothy's a first generation Iranian, and presumably speaks Farsi, which must have helped get her this dubious assignment in Iran where she's reporting that anti-government protests are heating up again.
We'll never forget her original reporting on absinthe smuggled deliciously in from Vancouver BC, and the people who drank it. That was an important story, but we liked her best for talking back to Sean Hannity after she wrote a non-offensive blog post at which he and others at Fox News took Great Umbrage.
After appearing on Hannity, she turned down Billo Reilly, which caused Billo to sic one of his attack producers on P-I Publisher Roger Oglesby as he got out of his car coming home one evening with his gym bag.
It was all great fun and caused O'Reilly to eventually name the dear old Seattle P-I as the "worst paper in the country" and Oglesby a "pinhead."
Al Jazeera has often been the the best if not the only news out of the erupting Middle Eastern countries. Parvaz notes in a tweet from Egypt that Fox News (who's called AJ a terrorist organization) wouldn't admit they were getting all their news product from...Al Jazeera.
We wish Dorothy Godspeed and etc... please write the headlines, girl, don't be one!
Tweet on some Dorothy here.
THE REPUBLICAN MANTRA Forgive us Lord, for we know not what we do ,and we dam sure dont want to learn. Being uninformed and ignorant is our defence.

So, if the people of Iran do stand up for themselves in effort to defend themselves from the mad mullahs and the horrors of Ahmadinejad and the rest of the tyranny of that country, what is Obama, along with Clinton going to do to help or support those people?
I hope Ms Pavaz his the sense to stay covered up and act properly so as to not get beaten or sexually assaulted by the men folk. There are rules that women must follow or their owners can bring much pain and suffering to them.

RL&R: I've worked pretty closely for the last several years with local Iranian-Americans (both genders) who travel frequently back home. They're perfectly competent at complying with the theocracy's enforced cultural norms when appropriate, as is Ms. Parvaz, I'm sure.
That said, the vast majority of Iranians, especially in the cities, are culturally pro-Western. (Rick Steves did a nice travel special on Iran and on Iranians' response to Westerners a couple years ago; seek it out.) The adamant fundamentalists tend to be the folks in the countryside. Not too different from the US, in that respect.

"and act properly?" - as if you would know what that is. For some strange reason, I think she probably knows what she needs to do, thank you.
But, then, maybe your expertise is unlimited.
If ever a poster has been more full of himself, I do not know who that would be.
I don't usually pick fights here but you're asking for one.
Pete, you treat him with too much respect.

I guess I need to be a little more clear when insulting the 7th century Mid-Eastern men and their treatment of women as chattel so the likes of the Anti-Dori can understand the risk, especially to western women that challenge their backwards ways.
Perhaps, because it was several days ago, you have forgotten how CBS reporter Lara Logan was brutally assaulted by heathonistic men celebrating their new found freedom from oppression (a freedom their women will not soon experience) by sexually attacking Mrs Logan.
I initially thought that you were an ass just out to impress the bizarre blogstress joanie, but am beginning to believe you are her. So your head, by being up her arse is in fact up you own arse.
Pete, I really hope you are 100% right. No woman, not even joanie, should be subjected to that abuse and humiliation.

You need to get your face out of fixed news and into the twenty-first century. And "joanie" is the last person to give a damn what an imbecile like you thinks.
You're always looking for strawmen.
I remember you saying that a good salesman could always get a job. What happened? Overrate yourself? Well, that's hardly surprising.

Coiler, did you catch Malloys segment on the Koch family? Preston Bush and Hitler and Koch and the Communists. Wow. And they're so respectable now. Like the Beatles sang, all it takes is money la la la la la.
Unbelievable. And these fools want to give them the rest.
Posted by: joanie | February 22, 2011 at 10:26 PM
I'm listening now. Malloy is spot on
Posted by: Coiler | February 22, 2011 at 10:29 PM
As I was getting into the car to come home, I heard Malloy in the middle of an article on the Koch family and how they got their $$$. Missed some of it so have been googling. Anyway, had something to do with Russia and the communists and some sort of theft along the way. Apparently, William Koch turned in his family - he was a whistleblower on the Koch Family and they ended up paying the government $22m or thereabouts. Now they are respectable society.
Right.
No wonder RLR likes these guys; they share the same values. Doesn't matter how you get it as long as you get it: MONEY.
I have a little more respect for Mitch Daniels who has suggesting pulling the bill on collective bargaining in Indiana. To his credit, Daniels admitted that he didn't like this tactic. He said that he didn't run on doing away with collective bargaining and doesn't think it should be on the table without a good airing. Even if Walker said he would pull the bill, nobody believes him. He's got that kind of reputation. He's corrupt.
Malloy is a storyteller. I love listening to him.

One more thing: getting rid of union results in less money on the left which we all knew but also the Koch Industries wants water and other natural resource rights in Wisconsin. They are not an overly developed state apparently and there's wealth in them there hills. I heard that earlier anyway. And there is a push on the part of international corporations to privatize water.
Better be careful what you wish for, RLR. I don't think you know the half of it.

Apparently Curley is most comfortable teamed up with a female. The past two nights he's had a lowkey woman ( the same one i think both nights, although i couldnt swear to it in a court of law). Kind of a jokester type, purring-voiced sidekick compliantly playing seconf bananna to Curley's jerky , abrasive "alpha".

Yes Joanie, Malloy is a story teller. A great story teller. Thats why i stopped listening to him. Now that you finally have realized that, maybe you should to.
Posted by: Progressive Blog Junkie | February 23, 2011 at 03:25 AM
That's a dumb response, but if it's all you got, so be it. You were always an alpha wannabe, huh? My word for you is yappy.
Posted by: joanie | February 23, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Lets me make it very clear for you Joanie. I am no threat to your standing on this blog. You are the "ALPHA" here. We have a lot in common. As one Progressive to another, i was just giving you some advice thats all. You even said it yourself, Malloy is a story teller. You dont get news from a story teller, you get news from journalists. Show some standards for petes sake, it'll make your stay on top much more easier.
