It's a huge story, except it isn't... Nontheless, Billo Reilly is popping his buttons, and Dori Monson (KIRO m-f, 12-3p) is strutting like a turkey in full bloom.
(photo: Dori throws another dog on the fire)
A UW professor and anti-war activist Amy Hagopian, doesn't like military recruiters. Is that news?
No.
She says their techniques are similar to the ones used by sexual predators. Is that news?
Yes, but only in the right-wing parallel media where patriotic correctness trumps just about any breaking news, real or conjured.
We're talking about Dori Monson's "scoop" (Producer Jake did a google) of an article in a UW publication about Hagopian's research titled "Should We End Military Recruiting in High Schools as a Matter of Child Protection and Public Health?"
The crux of it was, as Hagopian put it:
"A review of the medical literature suggests military service is associated with disproportionately poor health for young people. The youngest recruits have the greatest number of mental disorders in the U.S. military, including alcohol abuse, anxiety syndromes, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder."
Nobody can deny that military life these days can be hazardous to your health, but what Dori (and now Bill O'Reilly and Red Eye, Fox News' feeble answer to The Daily Show) pounced on, was this:
"Grooming behavior is defined as the process by which a child is befriended by a would-be abuser in an attempt to gain the child's confidence and trust."
(Dr. Hagopian gives a Marine recruiter a piece of her mind, P-I.com photo)
The reason it's not real news is because it's not the way sexual predators lure adolescents that's the problem, it's what they do to them once they've lured them.
Most all recruiters of adolescents, like churches, political activists, professional athletic clubs, and yes, universities and colleges - lure their tender targets the same way. When you read in Dr. Hagopian's article about what sexual predators actually do to get close to kids... it's pretty innocuous and not at all illegal or immoral.
Seems they, like Mormon Missionaries, or Lutherans, or The Seahawks bring donuts to meetings, chaperone dances, attend sporting events, help with homework, sponsor climbing walls -- they basically befriend (groom?) kids and gain their trust in order to persuade them.
Yawn.
Dori, Billo and Greg Gutfeld know that if they can quote a liberal using the words "military recruiters" and "sexual predator" in the same sentence, their low-information listeners will see blood on the moon, and maybe some queasy college administrator will buckle under the pressure and fire Dr. Hagopian with plenty of free publicity for all involved.
Sometimes that works.
Who does Dori hate the most? Gays, Mexicans, Blacks, Muslims, or plain ol libruls? He called Red Eye his "favorite news show," and has had a massive John Boehner since he got mentioned. what a doosh.

In this case I agree with Dori. Comparing military recruiters to sex predators is ludicrous.

E. Mile, you're right.
Recruiting children to rape, torture, and kill other people is fine as long as you don't actually fuck them up the ass.

We need a military. Just like we need police and immune systems. Sometimes they go wrong, but are necessary nonetheless. I know many members of the military, and the great majority are not pedophiles or necrophiliacs.
Posted by: Emile | December 08, 2010 at 11:49 PM
Of course conservatives don't like having recruiters likened to pedophiles... you're threatening to reveal their scam: talk young kids into fighting dirty old men's wars.
I just watched "Restrepo", good movie, and it's a shocking contrast to think of that dirtbag Dick Haliburton talking about taking the fight to the oil fields of the middle east, or Don "Hussein" Rumsfeld say "you fight the war... you're given, not the war... you want" and then seeing these good natured 18 year olds freaking out because their good friend just got shot in the face by... someone who had nothing to do with 9/11 at any rate.
BTW, Dori's favorite local news personality is Mimi Jung of KING 5 News fame, if I recall. I wonder if Dori's wife shares in this view.
Posted by: Andrew | December 09, 2010 at 12:56 AM
pedophiles or dupes? you sure don't think much of the us military.
and you tell chucks he needs to clean up his act?
it will be interesting to see if you walk that back or dig in your tiny heels on this one.

Monson got an offer grom Greg Gutman to he a guest on Redeye, the next time he was in NYC, as Gutman was taking his leave from his guest appearance on the weee one's show yesterday. Monson was like a middle school girl just asked out by the dreamboat quarterback for the varsity football team. He was chattering up a storm with butt boy Jason about when he might possibly get back to NYC and for what reason. Juat look at yourself, Dori. All growed up, and going on the big New York Tee Vee show.
Posted by: Tommy008 | December 09, 2010 at 05:54 AM
No where in the paper does she use the words "sexual predator". She says military recruiters use grooming techniques similar to predatory grooming behaviors. There is a big difference. She made the same point in her interview with DM, but he would not acknowledge it.
Dori has a face for radio and should stay off the teevee.
Posted by: AprilMayJune | December 09, 2010 at 08:06 AM
a distinction without a difference. hey a blind pig finds a truffle once in a blue moon and this is Dori's truffle. Sorry, but he's right on this one. Gutman and Monson discussed how Hagopian tried to go all cute with words back off by saying "oh i never said sexual". what other kind of predator is there involvojng adults and minors? let's be real. "Predatory grooming" denotes sexual predator behavior- would he or her be grooming the minor so he could buy his or her comic book collection for a dollar and then sell it for 500?
Posted by: Tommy008 | December 09, 2010 at 08:36 AM
Hagopian is a silly pretentious academic ass who got her panties caught in a ringer when some talkshow guys got wind of an asinine paper she wrote for a professional society. She's trying to dodge and weave, and backpedal now, of course, but she will still be stuck in that wringer
Posted by: Tommy008 | December 09, 2010 at 08:47 AM
I stopped listening to Dori some years ago, but I'm amazed at the picture- whats he doing to animals on that show nowadays?!
Posted by: Fred Grandy | December 09, 2010 at 09:33 AM
Oddly enough, I applied Mizzzzzzz Hagopian's criteria to Husky Football recruiters and mixed vigorously! Voila! They are predatory! I don't recall Amy getting to upset when Bill Clinton was bombing commuter trains in Belgrade. Curious.

yeah what's Dori DOING to that dog!
Posted by: Misty | December 09, 2010 at 09:54 AM
Jeez, it's his pet of the week he is trying to help the Humane Society get adopted. Lighten up~

E. Mile, the argument concerns military recruitment on campus, not whether the men and women if the US Military are pedophiles. Reason much, do we?
Here, it is clear that military recruiters make promises that they cannot fulfill and therefore lure children in pursuit of financial incentives and to preserve an easy tour of duty. This is little different from luring children for sexual gratification.

I heard the interview with Dr. Hagopian and I think we all know who and what she is...
"Ends justifies the means" reasoning and that obnoxious Liberal tone...
She couldn't make a reasonable point.
I'm pretty sure Dori said that Redeye is NOT a news show.
It isn't.
It's a round table discussion show and as funny as anything gets on a good night.
"Dori throwing another dog on the fire"?
Yeah... That's damn funny!
Keep the photos real and make up funny sayings for them...
The distortion of photos like what was done with Laura Ingraham only makes the Blatherwatch creators look like kids who can't stop throwing ice in the McDonalds playland.
Adult supervision please.

Look, everyone knows if teenagers were jumping at the chance to join the military, those recruiters wouldn't have to scour around highschool cafeterias, trying to catch hungry students as they make their way to much needed food. As with all things in life, if anything is truly good for you, you must go to that thing, it will not come to you.
Posted by: Andrew | December 09, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Dori Monson isn't long on KIRO if he can't get his numbers up. That's why his publicist is getting him on Fox News. It won't help.

The real issue here is having published in The American Journal on Public Health an editorial, written by Dr Hagopian, represented as an article based on scientific fact using real research.
Most people (the Journal certainly is widely read) would be led to believe that the Doctor would be an independent, open minded researcher. Those people would not likely know what kind of left wing, anti-military, anti-police, anti-man lunatic libtard the woman is.
Dr Hag is joanie on steroids. Joanie starts screwing with the little kids minds at the first grade level and Dr Hag finishes them off at the university level. The damage done between by the union led schoolmarms is immeasurable.
No wonder Seattle is so messed up.

A preview of coming attractions:
"The House has rejected a Democratic effort to pay Social Security recipients $250 to make up for the lack of a cost-of-living increase for next year.
Democrats argued that the payment was needed to offset the hardships of seniors facing a second consecutive year without an increase.
But Republicans contended that the nation couldn't afford the estimated $14 billion cost of the one-time payment, and that the two-year freeze comes after seniors received a significant boost in 2009."
Got that, seniors? The nation can "afford" over $700 billion in new debt by giving millionaires an unecessary extension of their budget-busting tax cuts, but a COLA is too expensive.
Next:
" A cloture vote on the Defense Authorization bill, including the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" has failed in the Senate 57-40.
Harry Reid brought the bill to the floor without a deal with Republicans, and as expected the obstruction continued, as will discrimination against millions of Americans."
Republicans, John McCain in particular, and bigots everywhere are cheering.
And finally:
The New York Times headline says it all:
Republicans Block U.S. Health Aid for 9/11 Workers
It seems like only yesterday that Republicans were calling them heroes -- today, not so much:
"Republican senators blocked Democratic legislation on Thursday that sought to provide medical care to rescue workers and residents of New York City who became ill as a result of breathing in toxic fumes, dust and smoke from ground zero."
And why did Republicans oppose the bill?
" Republicans have been raising concerns about how to pay for the $7.4 billion measure ..."
Well, sure. Adding $700 billion to the deficit to make sure millionaires get a tax break is vital, but finding one percent of that amount to provide medical care for 9/11 workers is just too much. Priorities.
Posted by: sparky | December 09, 2010 at 04:17 PM
Sparky, the Democrats are being a little bit disingenuous now, wouldn't you say? WE all know that the 9/11 bill has enough Republicans to pass. Just nothing passes until the tax bill passes.
Nancy and Harry are playing games.
Oh, really though, don't ask, don't tell.....millions of Americans being discriminated against?
Again, nothing passes until the tax bill passes. The R's even gave in and will allow the government to steal 35% of a dead persons estate as a compromise with Obama.

Right..its always someone else's fault, Chuck. Never a Republican.
Posted by: sparky | December 09, 2010 at 05:42 PM
'bout time you figured that one out Ms Sparky, but not exactly true. Bush pissed away money like a Democrat for years.
But I stand by my last post.
Posted by: Chucks | December 09, 2010 at 09:24 PM
Conversely, Sparky, its always someone else's fault, never a Democrat.

Not that I think anyone cares, but I just heard the interview that Dori did with Greg Gutfeld and he did indeed say that Redeye is a "National news show".
They talk about the news, but it is an opinion show to be sure.
Just had to correct my earlier mistake in trying to defend Dori on that.
Posted by: Rat_Bastard | December 10, 2010 at 01:26 AM
don't worry, nobody cared.
Posted by: Andrew | December 10, 2010 at 01:29 AM
"Phew"... Good.
Posted by: Rat_Bastard | December 10, 2010 at 11:03 AM
UH, Dori Monson is the host of an entertainment show, DESIGNED to provoke wild eyed reaction in listeners....mission accomplished. Dori's ratings are on the rise again. He knows his business.

Christopher Hitchens : the people who really curl my lip are the ones who willingly accept such supporters for the sake of a Republican victory, and then try to write them off as not all that important, or not all that extreme, or not all that insane..
