Long gone from the Seattle radio dial the call letters KAYO belong now to a classic country FM station in Sarah Palin's hometown of Wasilla AK. 1150 now is now the home on the dial of Alternative Talk KKNW.
But KAYO, long the country station in Seattle (before KMPS blasted it away on the FM) had many former formats, including Top 40.
Longtime reader and former Seattle/Portland radio man, 'dale from albuquerque' sent us stuff and writes:
The "Nifty Top 50" from 1150... from '58 and '59. These were years before KJR was rockin' and rollin' and well before KAYO became KOUNTRY KAYO (in 1963). At this time KAYO ran a close no. 2 to KOL in Seattle.
The jocks came and went. Guys like Bob Fredericks, Herb Hall, Claude Brimm, Norm Apple, Tad Jones, Russ Norman, Lee Lucas and the most memorable of all...Pat O'Day. Those were the days when programers named their on air talent with fun sounding nicknames like the Good Guys, the Swingin' Gentlemen or the Mag 7.
KAYO's jocks were known as the Untouchables...remember the then-big TV show? The station issued free HIT PARADER'S Club cards and if you
were listening when they called your name (11 min., 50 secs to phone in) you might be lucky enough to win the top 50 records or a case of coke. The kids at school one morning let me know that I had missed my big opportunity to be a winner.
(We love how DJ's back when's names all sounded like soap opera loverboys or male hookers...)
