Orson Welles' notorious 1937 radio broadcast, War Of The Worlds is remembered by Feliks Banel on his This NOT Just In to be aired on KUOW on Friday. Audio and script are available here, now. (This being the KUOW website, downloading is confusing: It's on the right, weirdly under "Listen to KUOW News." Click one of the audio players).
One of the most famous places in the country panicked by the faux news report/radio drama of the Martian invasion of New Jersey was none other than little ol' Concrete, WA in the upriver Skagit Valley of Washington.
The broadcast aired on a Sunday afternoon on KIRO at the same time a thunderstorm knocked out the power in the little burg. The population briefly went a little nuts... and lived to read about it the next day in the New York Times and in thousands of papers across the country. (Neither the first nor the last time listeners regretted believing something they heard on KIRO)
