Spot on Tommy, different times for radio these day

Andrew

One thing I find interesting is that all these replacement try-outs, John Curley, Marty Reamer, are friendly people, friendly in the vein of Dave Ross. Not so intellectual and contemplative perhaps, but upbeat and positive. They are not shock jock or morning zoo like R&D. They are not "angry white men" like Monson, Shiers, Schram or anyone on KVI. I think Bonneville is trying to make KIRO a more agreeable, listenable station, and not the mishmash of angry politics and drivetime zoo that it is now. I don't think Monson is compatible with the direction the station is headed, but Shiers is slippery. He can slide into another role if called upon to do so.

Tommy008

R and D have a peculiar talent that works with popping into and out of traffic and news breaks...... that's why i think they're the best the suits can do with that difficult time slot, remember they tried Ross in it before.....didn't work... Shiers will probably stay ,he's good at obsequiously staying under the radar, but then just can't avoid showing his ass, like the time he proclaimed "disrespected" isn't a word

Jo

Thank GOD Ron and Don are going to be back tomorrow. The people filling in today were soooooooo boring I had to change the channel less than 10 minutes.

Jo

Dori gone would be great. Last time he was fired he sued which is so out of character for him. Wonder what he will find to sue for this time.

Fatso

I had no idea about where Leykis went or why. That was great info on him - that's the reason I keep coming to this site.

I agree, by the ay, the last time I listened to a Leykis streaming broadcast it was all the usual "Leykis 101" Friday BS. If he was doing that full time, that's why he's gone. No one wants to hear that all the time.

Tommy008

hahahaa he SUED after being let go from the old KING1090? i didn't know that. What a baby. his idol Rush Limbaugh never sued any of the several radio stations who fired him in the far past. Who sues unless you're a minority who can prove racism/discrimination? Being fired is part of the business....i think he had a 6 or 7 year run on KING. Yeah, he will be ugly when he's shown the door......he's been extremely spoiled by his 15 year run with KIRO..very unusual to get a run that long... i'm putting Mself out on a limb here with my predictions...a sitting target for Duh-ff.......

Phil McKraken

Rahm Emanuel hates black people, and you are worried about Ron and Don?

Jo

No not KING 1090 it was KING TV he sued and supposedly got a settlement. He wasn't technically fired from KING 1090 they closed.

Duffman

If you don't like Tom Cruise (off-screen) then you don't watch him on-screen; what perfect rationale.
Couldn't you do the same with Dori; there are many, many other stations within the greater-Seattle area, why persecute yourself. It simply doesn't make sense.
'Out on a limb'...you mean like when you said that Suits wouldn't last 6-mos at KFI, in L.A.? LMAO
If Monson gets canned and he sues it would likely be because of a violation of his 'contract'. Now, do any of you Dori Monson EXperts have a copy of his contract with Bonneville?? DON'T THINK SO!
Subject of being jealous: BEcause he exemplifies the all-american in his all-around life and those less talented or lacking in their lives can't help but be critical out of JEALOUSY. DEAL WITH IT!
DORI ROCKS!

Insider

R&D are gone this month. Bonneville is frantically re-recording all those god damn endorsements. It takes time. Sponsors don't want some fired DJ hawking their goods and services.

Tommy008

i'm sure Bonneville reserved the right to fire Monson on the spot and simply honor the monetary payment schedule of the remainder of his contract , just like CBS did with Leykis, although i hate to compare a pipsqueak and a pissant to a legend....if Monson sures it will be because he's a big, overgrown baby, not for any violations of his rights......

Duffman

You're not 'SURE' of ANYthing Holmes, as you are NOT privy to the contract terms...period!

Tommy008

When is your first class Duhh? does middle school start at 8 or 7:30? how do you hide the laptop withthe wireless card on your desk? beneath a pile of papers? do you post when the teacher is giving attention to a student and not in front of the class? a male early teen to older adult male crush/adoration like you have of Monson is common for young hetero male teens Duhh, so i wouldnt be worried...

Rich

Dori is a minority, he has a small apendage. Maybe all the hate jocks do. My mind is in the gutter.

TomF

Leykis had a solid 12- to 14-year run with his angry-blue-collar-guy, how-to-get-laid rap. Circa 1996 or so to 2009. That's a good long time in radio to work a completely formulaic, predictable persona / storyline which was literally identical day after day. (Which is not to say it wasn't funny, in a meta sense... just predictable.)

It would be great if Dori were bound to the same timetable; it would mean his time is also about up.

The big difference between Leykis and Dori, though, is that Leykis adopted his man-pig persona as a calculated business move. As someone upthread noted, he was a pretty interesting, penetrating liberal-political talker before he realized the man-pig gig differentiated him more effectively. It was all a put-on.

Dori, a small man making small points in a small market, is different. He really believes his rap. He also believes he's affecting the WA political landscape, and although he has none of the polish or perspective of the good national talkers, he harbors delusions of syndicatibility. He's too invested in his angry-little-guy persona, but not wise or curious enough to improve it. He's not a student of his craft; he's not educable.

It would be a breakthrough day in this market if KIRO were to can Dori and R&D, reshape the whole post-12p schedule around something other than small-bore demagoguery and lumpen idiocy, and try to reclaim its class-act mantle.

But I suspect what will happen instead is that Ross, who's been mailing it in since his House run, drifts away, some combo platter of Reamer / West / Curley / etc. inhabit 9a-3p, and R&D remain. I would like to be wrong, though.

Duffman

You are INcorrect, sir! ...but thanks for your attempt at a contributing comment
-DORI ROCKS!!!

joanie

Happy used to give Goldy quite a time as i recall. I know he's from "Seatle" but I didn't know Mercer Island, April.

The two I hear most frequently from the Seattle area are Dick from Lake City and Happy. Also, I like "Gary" who calls Goldman a lot.

joanie

Duffman, did you know you sound like an old guy trying to sound like a young guy?

Duffman

Haha...excuse me have to be quick; trying to hide this IPad from the teach. :)

AprilMayJune

The last time I heard Happy was when Ray Taliaferro "went off" on him and told him to never call his show again. I am confident that Happy is a regular on BW.

Duffman

Could be our resident Dori-hater.

Rat Bastard

We all have to face the fact that the KIRO we loved could simply just be gone...
And that the moronic style of R&D type shows are what works better for them.
Us old people who like the dry style of Dave Ross, and love or hate Dori, yet listen can just keep our tight fist on our old person wallets and watch as the advertisers buy air time to sell stuff to the young and foolish.
You know, those who spend money on more of that crap.
Things change, times change... Radio changes.
Or, maybe R&D will indeed be gone and they go back to what most here seem to want from KIRO.
We can only wait and see.
I'd rather see Dori bail to KVI so I could listen to his show without all of that awful FM static everytime there's a drop of moisture in the air.

Duffman

'I'd rather see Dori bail to KVI so I could listen to his show without all of that awful FM static everytime there's a drop of moisture in the air.'

Good suggestion RB...I would like this also. The FM thing is LAME.

Coiler

Remember when Stephanie Miller mocked Rush on Larry King and Dori went ape shit?

Duffman

Didn't she MOCK Dori?

Coiler

Dori is running out of options. No more Stupid Prices commercials, does he still have Gutter Helmet?.

Rat Bastard

My favorite "Dori going ape shit" moment was after he was on that cable show with Nancy Grace...
He's at his best when the ape shit is flying.

Duffman

Bonneville/KIRO Moniters:
Please take note how a topic of R&D has turned into a Dori Monson fiesta. Gee...who do ya think generates controversy and interest...AND REVENUE! lmao

Coiler

Yes, Dori is unsafe at any modulation.

Rat Bastard

That's the blatherwatch playbook...
Start a thread "anything KIRO" and it goes to Dori bashing, a bit of Dori praise and people forget what the original post was.
No question, Dori is a good radio host.
The people I know who don't like him sure still listen... They usually say how they agree with much of what he says, but he's just so full of himself.
(That's how I am with Rush Limbaugh)
R&D get me to tune away just at the sound of their voices doing ads.
I heard Don's voice while listening to KTTH/David Boze yesterday and went to KVI/Carlson right away.
One thing... We have a great stash of local talk here in Seattle.
Have to be grateful for that at least.
The FM thing has me looking for alternatives to KIRO often.
My radios don't like to be turned upside down or facing the wall so I can get away from the static.

dave (not dave ross)

tommy i think dori represents moromon politics and their conservative mantra, and i think he is safe also, like him or not.

Duffman

Yeah...and Mormon too.

Obama is a black man

I have been saying for months that R&D are done. In fact I posted in May that they were lucky if they had 90 days on the clock. My prediction is right on schedule. The show is meaningless and adds nothing to the once grand reputation of KIRO. I used to think the show was one big schtick but I'm convinced more than ever that these guys are just plain dumb. Don should be a personal trainer and I don't know what career path would even be possible for Ron-maybe bouncer. Good bye guys.

Tommy008

Don't dump the dopes! Monson has lower native intelligence not the morons of mid-afternoon. It is Monson's time and turn to go, not the two turds. Monson needs to man up and take a well-deserved canning, without being ugly as he leaves the building, running his mouth in the press with assorted whinings or sueing Bonneville. Come on, who gets more than a 15 year run except Dave and Rush? Leykis didn't even get a 15 year run.

TomF

With regard to the "once-grand reputation of KIRO": I think it's pretty clear management is moving in a different direction, or R&D wouldn't be allowed to stage a coarse and dunderheaded "afternoon zoo" broadcast.

Since The Buzz 100.7 (then KIR0-FM) went country a few years ago, there's been a place in Seattle for hot FM talk -- a format that deemphasizes news altogether. Today's KIRO might be thinking along those lines, in which case R&D would be right at home, but Dave wouldn't.

The prime example of a successful hot FM talk format that I can think of was WJFK-FM in Washington DC in the 1990s. They programmed Howard Stern, G. Gordon Liddy, Don and Mike, and the Greaseman (aka Doug Tracht) 6a-10p, and it killed. There was news in the margins -- DC is a news market -- but WJFK never tried to be all-news radio. I can see Bonneville wanting to take the new KIR0-FM in this direction, away from both KOMO 1000 and the NPR stations. Sad for the culture, but maybe good for business.

Duffman

I'm still VERY curious as to why KIRO has apparently maintained a 'connection' with Luke Burbank and his TBTL podcast??? Could there be something developed from that.
Luke is a talent and I like him so if KIRO were to fit him in somewhere within the slots that would be fine with me.

Tommy008

it is very provincial radio to have a hometowner like Monson, who obviously isn't a rare talent like Dave Ross, nowhere near, stay on the local station for mnore than 15 years. It makes the station look smalltime , inbred and provincial.

Tommy008

hot fm could work, but that means Dori not just Dave would have to go......at this point Dori is the crotchety, tiresome old Gramps who never left the hometown cocoon, just not dynamic,,, leaving someone like Monson around just doesnt fit the hotfm vibe..you bring an exciting outoftown jock in to replace him

Tommy008

Dori absolutely believes he's untouchable at KIRO , you hear it in his voice, and knowing a bit about the perverse nature of life, that tells me he could easily, if not likely be shown the door next week,

Duffman

Folks, if you hear it from the Dori-hater you can make bet against it.
Bwahahahahahaha!

TomF

Absolutely true that Dori, who is nothing but old news in the market, would not be able to help define a "new" KIRO hot FM talk format.

Tod

I'd even take the Mike O'Meara show over R&D.

Rat Bastard

Dori is just plain, good all around talk radio.
He does politics, current events and is good with the seemingly insignificant topics like having a problem in line at Costco.
I'm guessing that KIRO keeps someone like Burbank around simply because the format of podcasting is developing... They don't want to throw that away until they see what happens with it.
I need the multi radio format of radio, turn it one where you are and there it is...
Old fashioned, but that's what I like.
And the 15 year thing?
It shows that Dori has staying power with his talk show style, I think he can have a show in Seattle as long as he wants it.
May not be at KIRO and that's even better.
I'd be happy to see KIRO FM carry on without me as a listener and hear Dori on KTTH or preferably KVI where they have strong local shows with Bryan Suits and Carlson.
KIRO can keep their Rons and their Dons.
As long as I get the radio content that I like on an AM signal, I'm thrilled.
Leave the whickey wacky cowbell clangers to the kids with their crooked baseball caps listening to FM.
Hey, even Robin and Maynard weren't bad at 100.7...
I'd take them easily as replacements for R&D.
Then again, fingernails on a blackboard would be an improvement.
(in stereo)
Oh yeah, and Dori isn't the head coach! (that's for Tommy)

Tommy008

Dori needs to go to KVI wih Suits.....he and Suits are of similar ilk........he's not that good that he deserves to be on KIRO more than 15 years...please....I'm seeing 18 months at KVI and then maybe demotion to KMO in Tacoma where he started,, wait a minute KMO doesnt exist anymore....bwahahahaha

Duffman

'Leave the whickey wacky cowbell clangers to the kids with their crooked baseball caps listening to FM.'

Love it. When I read this an image of our on-site Dori-hater appeared.
Spot on. Bwhahahahaha

Andrew

Some might say 15 years is a good run, but a failure is failure whether be it realized now or later. Smarter, more talented radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh can last for decades because they know the business and they know their audience.

As far as this attention flattering or helping Dori, I assure you I listen to TBTL, and if it wasn't for TBTL it would be MSNBC or CNN. I like KIRO and wish the best for the station. Dori's hateful politics are a stain on an otherwise great station.

Duffman

'...but a failure is failure...'

Like you would have the expertise to say that; of course having access to and having analyzed their financial statements, I assume?. Get real Einstein. How absurd! [stick with TBTL, and straighten up that cap] lmao

The Glenn Beck Comedy Tour 2009

A friend who's a regular listener of TBTL told me that Burbank was crowing the other night that he gets more downloads every day than Shiers' listeners according to the numbers indicated in the last book.

Could be a trend. It certainly is part of the trend of Bonneville suits making msitakes.

Andrew

IMO, if a person happens upon a good salary, but doesn't have the ability to reproduce that salary either on their own or with another company, then it was luck all along. They happened upon favorable circumstances. They were at the right place at the right time, just like a lotto winner.
