Staffers spent a long week anticipating when or for whom the bell would toll.
The Apocalypse will occur sometime after Tuesday- the
sleepless nights,
the anxiety, fear and depression to be extended over the long weekend.

What a bunch of jerks. I remember being in a job where they dragged out a layoff process over the first 4 days of the workweek and thought that was bad. This is just inhuman. Is Dori Monson in on this? Because it sounds like the kind of thing he'd get a big laugh out of.
Posted by: Norah | May 29, 2010 at 08:51 AM
Actually the only one's I know of who laugh and/or mock folks that lose their jobs reside herein and their names start with 'j' and 't'.
Most everyone else has a modicum of compassion.

It's obviously an employer's market.

This is surprising? This is the same Bonneville that would ritualistically axe a salesman right before Christmas break. This is the Bonneville that would try to humiliate long-time employees into quitting before retirement by putting them at the front desk lobby--that way they'd save the pension.
As Phil Harper (RIP) used to say: "That's why we call radio 'the industry with a heart.'"

Yes, Dori made them drag it out so everyone at KIRO can suffer...
Except him of course since his job is safe.
Pretty sure Dori made it rain this weekend when he heard that there was a church sponsored picnic to benifit ophans with severe burn injuries too.
Geez...
There's a reason for delaying cuts, most likely not out of malice on the part of Bonneville.
And since the tea party people are "tea baggers", I havent yet seen Bonneville referred to as "Boner-ville" or did I just miss that?
I'm as happy at the thought of cuts at KIRO as anyone since it means some of the hosts I don't like may be gone, but come on.
Posted by: Rat Bastard | May 29, 2010 at 11:37 AM
If I blame Dori for anything, it's for the fact that she is a self promoter who treats her show like an island within the station. You can tell she was never to excited about doing the battle of the talk show hosts. As the talker with the highest rated talk show, she could have done more to build enthusiasm for the rest of the station.
A good talk show host knows that the other programs you're stand shoulder to shoulder with do have an impact on the fortunes of your show. If Ron and Don lasted longer than anyone expected I believe it's because, for among other reasons, they made frequent mention of the other hosts, and those hosts were loathe to return the favor.
Posted by: Andrew | May 29, 2010 at 01:15 PM
Dori Monson is an excellent talk show host. He is the consumate entertainer and knows how to prod his audience into exciting exchanges. This is why so many are 'accidentally' listening to him. Over and above that, he is versatile and hosts a very informative and entertaining pre-Seahawks game show. His co-hosts like him and he creates and maintains a cohesive comaradrie among all on the show.
He is obviously an intelligent person who excelled in school (i.e. testing and skipping grades because he was ahead of his age group)and is one who went on to further his educational career (on his own earned dime) at the UDub.
A devoted father and husband, totally committed to his family, who goes the extra mile and volunteers to coach girls basketball and raise money for his community.
He has it all...the all-American and it's understandable that those not so talented or sincere are jealous of him. Calling him a 'she' or 'her' just shows how immature that jealousy can be. Objective criticism is one thing but the bull**** thrown his way herein by 'some' is over-the-top and those of you participating in it should well be ashamed of yourselves. Practice a little 'good home training' and try to make yourselves useful, instead of showing your petty jealousy and immature stupidity. Have a good day!
Posted by: Duffman | May 29, 2010 at 01:38 PM
Alas, the faux Dori (3:07PM) is just another one of jealous and hate-filled perverts coming out of the woodwork. Good Home Training has missed the mark once again :(

They are probably aiming towards more of a format like KXL did when they were sold, the new owners brought back the afternoon and morning news block and syndicated and local hosts.
Posted by: Coiler | May 29, 2010 at 07:03 PM
I shouldn't have said that about Dori, because we don't know yet if he's one of the ones who's going to be axed--he may be having an anxious weekend like the others. I don't like him, but that doesn't mean he'd laugh if his fellow workers got fired. Sorry about that.
Posted by: Norah | May 29, 2010 at 07:46 PM
I don't wish unemployment on anyone. I think Dave could pick up other work and he probably probably has plenty saved for retirement. He is always talking about how important it is to save. I don't listen in the mornings, but do enjoy him when I get a chance.
I think losing the job might be good for Dori. He ego is a bit big and he is quite arrogant. I remember him from KING and his head has grown way beyond anything healthy. I do think he will be spared though because of his family commitments and his political stance. Dori has bragged many times about having enough money to buy a second home. And from what he has hinted , it sounds like his in-laws have plenty so he will be fine. He might have to give up the Jaguar and the attitude.
Ron and Don are OK. As the youngest personalities, I think they both need the jobs more than Dave or Dori.
However, we know that corporate America doesn't really care who needs the job. It is all about bring in the $$. The big personalities will find other work. It is all the people behind the scenes that will have the hardest time.
Talk radio isn't the place right now. I think a switch to music is coming up.
Posted by: Jo | May 29, 2010 at 10:04 PM
"However, we know that corporate America doesn't really care who needs the job. It is all about bring in the $$"...
Really? Did I see that posting correctly?
Did Jo really just say that?
Yes, keeping a radio host on air because of the ratings and advertising that said ratings bring in is INSANE!
They should hire people who need the job, not people who are good at it.
What type of sick, twisted freaks are these radio station owners who hire on air personalities because of their radio hosting ability?
Why do hospitals hire wealthy doctors who went to medical school, when there are out of work hot dog vendors?
Evil, corporate greed, that's why!
(sigh)

it was humorous to finally find out that Monson is only the rebound coach for his high school girls team,.... he's a second banana.....all this time he has said he coach'es the girl's team, without any qualifiers....true he's never said he was the head coach but somehow i assumed he was.....and most people assumed he was let's be honest here......somewhat dishonest? ...yeah, i'd say so..
Posted by: Tommy008 | May 30, 2010 at 01:18 AM
also, he's never mentioned the head coach by name , even when it came time to give him credit for getting them their first outing at the state championships- no, he just kept talking about "his girls" going to state.......reminds me of the time earlier this year when he absolutely would not acknowledge Dave Ross''es tremendous fundraising achievement, that saved the fireworks. Small, pathetic man.
Posted by: Tommy008 | May 30, 2010 at 01:45 AM
we're stuck John Rothman tonijht on kgo filling in for a younger hipper host......he's doing his typical retirees show, ........snooze zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

speaking of a small, pathetic man...
WTF are you doing b*tching about dori monson for over an hour at 2am on a Sunday morning? Seriously, do you really not have anything better to do?
You're obsessed, boy....
Posted by: gdog | May 30, 2010 at 02:51 PM
hahaha it's really quite stunning, angry fellow, and it all happened to hit me at 2 am...... one of those aha moments.... it's one thing that your ego prevents you from ever saying the word "assistant coach", over a time period of years on the radio talking about your high school girls team, and basically pretending you're the coach by your misleading choice of words... it is absolutely unbelievably small that you wouldn't mention the head coach once, the first time the team is going to "state" in the history of the school...absolutely stunning...... any objective person would agree....
Posted by: Tommy008 | May 30, 2010 at 04:19 PM
just in- Dori Monson has been telling us for years now that he "coaches" girls basketball at a local high school......i did not learn until the week of Dori's team going to "state", from the lips of Hersholt, not Monson, that he is only an assistant coach in charge of "rebounds" with the team. Dori has been playing a little game with us.....he obviously wants us to think he's more than he is with the team, thus using terms like "coaching" , and "my girls" instead of "working with Head coach '******'" , or assistant coaching".., "our girls", etc. The head coach has been made a nonperson by Dori with no mention of him ever, even before and after the team's first time ever trip to "state", a huge achievement for any head coach. Of course Dori's offenses were offenses of omission not comission, as he's never said anything that it technically untrue, just very misleading, which i believe was his intent.

Here's the facts: http://learn.shorelineschools.org/shorecrest/gbasketball/index.php
"Assistant Coach: Dori Monson"
Dori Monson's wikipedia page omits the fact that he's an assistant coach. Someone familiar with how that works should work to make that more accurate.
Posted by: Andrew | May 31, 2010 at 09:59 AM
thanks for the info aNDREW...Allow me to congratulate Shoreline High girl's basketball HEAD COACH Ed Wissing for getting his team to the state championships for the first time in the school's history, way to go ed! Props to you and YOUR girls! You the man! .....anyone can edit wikipedia pages but uo ihave ot register first if you want to hide your IP address, otherwise youe IP address will be recorded publicly as the editor .....TH EOHNLY REASON I DIDN'T EDIT mONSON's profile there is becaus eit says "girl's you th basketball" ..it's possible he is the actual head coach of some youth league girls team .. not the high school team... but i doubt he has time to work with more than the high school team
Posted by: Tommy008 | May 31, 2010 at 10:21 AM
sorry it's SHORECREST HIGH SCHOOL girls basketball team , NOT SHORELINE.. MY BAD..... Ed Wissing is the winning Head Coach of SHORECREST HIGH SCHOOL girls basketball team, NOT Dori Monson... You and YOUR girls rule, Ed!
Posted by: Tommy008 | May 31, 2010 at 11:04 AM
I don't listen to his show any longer, but when I did I never heard any mention of this head coach, just lots of boastful references like "when I coach girl's basketball..." and "there will be fell in tomorrow as I'm off to coach girls basketball..." I definately get the sense that Monson is trying to attribute the teams good fortunes to himself and not to this little if ever mentioned head coach.

stolen glory is obnoxious and wormlike behavior wherever you find it.....from the battlefield to the basketball courts...
Posted by: Tommy008 | May 31, 2010 at 01:30 PM
I don't listen to Monson anymore--nor do I "accidentally" tune in--but I remember early on in "American Idol's" run that he was on a kick about predicting who'd be voted off and one instance stated a name and said he's shave off an eyebrow if he was wrong.
Which he was.
But the next day, he inserted a bad imitation of the announcement to make it look like he was right so he wouldn't have to make good on the bet.
A couple years later, Ron and Don mentioned a bet that Jen Andrews made with Monson that she lost, and R&D stepped in to try to convince DM to let it go. "A bet's a bet" said the self-important turd. "That's how I roll."
Indeed.
That's when I stopped listening to him or considering that his advertisers were anything less than shills and con-men. Don't hear too many of the mortgage companies he was huckstering at the time any more.
I heard on Ron and Don that Herr Dorffman was touting that he was the longest running talk-show host in Seattle history by stating that Ross' leave to compaign negated a continuous string. He neglected to mention his own "leave-taking" a couple summers ago in order to make that claim. I phoned that information into to KIRO, and they just had a good laugh.
Dori's a fraud. Being a succcessful fraud doesn't make him any more admirable, but if his sycophants and acolytes want to portray him as such, they should remember to wipe the brown off their noses before they go into public.
Posted by: The Glenn Beck Comedy Tour 2009 | May 31, 2010 at 01:41 PM
i think the only honorable option left for Dori is to resign.

Posted by: KS | May 31, 2010 at 03:44 PM
I'm a Dori fan from way back and yes... Absolutely...
He has a Godzilla sized ego just like every other radio host.
I was under the impression by the way he talks that he was the team's coach, not a rebound coach, but that doesn't mean that he's been purposely misleading his listeners.
I'm convinced that he is a genuinely decent person and although he would rather be liked than not... He probably thrives on the fact that we're all here debating his "goodness and badness".
The fact is, he's being talked about and that is good for his show.
Posted by: Rat Bastard | May 31, 2010 at 11:47 PM
Good for his show? His station is tanking. How good for his show could it be?
If anything I think it's fair to say Dori Monson has hastened KIRO's demise by burning the NPR crowd that KIRO has sought with the move to FM.
Dori's brand of radio is junk food where a healthy diet is necessary. Dave Ross goes to great lengths to demonstrate to listeners that KIRO is an adult radio station only to have Dori Monson come on and knock over what Dave Ross so carefully built. Dave Ross demonstrates enlightened discourse only to have Monson come on and strongly ridicule people or politicians who differ with him on what are highly contentious subjects in the first place. It's anti-intellectual and it scares the sizeable NPR base away.
Posted by: Andrew | June 01, 2010 at 01:25 AM
That is incorrect, Dori simply states that is on the coaching staff; he never said he was the head coach of anything and he never misled anyone about anything.. Please stop lying. DORI RULES!!!
Posted by: Duffman | June 01, 2010 at 05:44 AM
I must say, I DO like Tony Miner as co-host with Linda on KIRO's morning news. He comes off as a straight news guy with a good voice no bull**** or corny ancient jokes and/or superflous quips. Straight news is what he offers and it works for me.
Posted by: Duffman | June 01, 2010 at 07:41 AM
Tommy...I'm worried about you, man...
"Obsession or Obsessed may refer to: Fixation (psychology)
Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD)
Obsessive love
Sexual obsession
obsession n. Compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling or emotion, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety."
Posted by: gdog | June 01, 2010 at 09:17 AM
KIRO jumped the shark when they hired Ron and Don, then fell right into the shark tank when they made the move to FM. Huge mistake.
And why would NPR fans be listening to KIRO?
NPR is better background noise for "protest puppet" making...
KIRO had it's best days when it was the combo of Dave and Dori...
Dori isn't the reason they have problems, it's the decision to go FM morning zoo style with R&D...
Plus the fact that radio just isn't as popular as it once was now that podcasting is grabbing more and more...
Just like what cable news did to the networks.
Posted by: Rat Bastard | June 01, 2010 at 10:21 AM
Duffon stop lying......i never siad Dori SAID he was the head coach....he has necer used the words "on the coaching staff" or "assistant coach"....don't you think it odd that i had to learn from Gregg Hersholt that there is a head coach above dORI...WOULDN'T DORI WANT to give his head coach his kudos during the week of the state champioinship games? as i said Dori has never said anything technically correst...what he does is, he continually says "i coach girls basketball" or " i coach my girls on the basketball team at Shorecrest".. since he's the rebound coach it is "legally" cprrect that he "coaches"......a fair person not out to take undeserved glory or credit away from the hard working head coach ( Ed Wissing) would say " I'm assistant coaching at Shorecrest girls basketball" or better yet... "I;m working under Head Coach Wissing as rebound coach" Rat Bastard has alreasy admitted he understood Dori to mean he was head coach at the school from his choice of words... he chooses to give it a benign interpretation, i choose to think Monson is trying to seem like a bigger shot on the team than he is ..... stealing someone else's glory is wormlike behavior
Posted by: Tommy008 | June 01, 2010 at 10:52 AM
I've heard him mention the coach's name and I listen to him every day so you must have been either doint some heavy rollin in market trading or out and about in your Mercedes.
Your obsession with Dori needs to be tempered; try tuning in another station and not putting yourself through such imaginary torture.
I will not discuss this with you further...your posts on this will be self-evident of your irrational obsession. BUH-bye.
Posted by: Duffman | June 01, 2010 at 11:39 AM
haha you heard him mention the coaches name? if youre telling the truth that was one day out of years of listening. the reason i'm very skeptical of your claim is i was listening during the days just preceding his team going to "state"( heard him doing his initial announcement of and bragging on the teams qualifying for "state" for 10 min or so) and heard no mention of Wissing or that a head coach above him even existed....mentioning the coach'es name once and saying you are "coaching your girls",etc. at the high school the rest of the time over several years is equivalent to a company putting a legal disclaimer in microscopic, unreadable fine print on the ass end of the product where no none would ever look ..,,,, Andrew and Rat Bastard have both said they got the impression Monson was head coach...many more will follow
Posted by: Tommy008 | June 01, 2010 at 12:05 PM
How can this little troll coach 'rebounding' to girls who tower over him?
Posted by: Bill | June 01, 2010 at 12:46 PM
Since I've been called out by KS, I will answer. How would I classify Glenn Beck?
"Certifiable," that's how.
The moniker is for one of those noxious in-theater presentations that Beck beams to a select coterie of desperates when there're no opera or WWE smackdowns scheduled. Beck actually did have a "Comedy Tour" in 2009, and it was neither a "tour," not funny, ensuring that his abysmal record for "speaking the truth" remained unsullied...by actually speaking the truth. He is this genration's Morton Downey, Jr. who will fade into obscurity when his relevence...or ability to sell gold...fades. Like Downey, Jr. when he dies, he will be remembered as a curiosity from a less-civilized era, and then forgotten.
Any questions?

Duffman! Is that you Dori?
Posted by: Jim Palmer | June 01, 2010 at 06:48 PM
I got drunk with Morton Downey, Jr. once in Beverly Hills (different lifetime -- don't ask) and he was actually a smart, thoughtful man who suffered no small amount of self-loathing. He knew he was perpetrating idiotic, cartoonish demagoguery in exchange for fame and fortune. Too late, he realized he'd branded himself permanently as a tele-maniac, and he was terribly sad about it. Downey died shortly thereafter. I seriously doubt Glenn Beck has the same perspective on himself, or that he will die soon, unfortunately.
Posted by: TomF | June 02, 2010 at 07:56 AM
I remember right after the basketball tourney, Dori was on the air and he mentioned he was an assistant coach and that the coach deserved a lot of credit....but he didn't name the coach that I recall. BUT it struck me: Whaaa? He's not THE coach? He always presented it like he was THE coach. You mean he's only been an assistant coach this whole time?
Posted by: dkl | June 02, 2010 at 09:12 AM
He named the coach of the Scots at other times...trust me!!!
