Feliks Banel’s piece about Seattle radio and its fascinating downtown history is a must-read at P-I com.
... Because of limitations of the original transcontinental cable that brought network programs to Seattle in radio's heyday, the city's most powerful stations in the 1930s and 1940s were all gathered in a now forgotten few square blocks downtown, in buildings that are all still standing.Feliks writes: “I did much of the research back in 2003 when I led a walking tour through the buildings mentioned.”A local historian- long at at Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry- Banel is a communications consultant who writes about radio for Crosscut.com and is the Not Quite Historian for KOMO Newsradio’s Nine2Noon.
Fisher's Blend Station
That sure brings back memories. That is reminiscent of small-town radio. Seattle used to be a small town. I miss that town. I remember boring Sundays but I still miss them. Chevrolet brought us Dinah Shore. What did Texaco bring? Bob Hope?
Everything's gotten too big. I don't like global.

Felix has done us all a big favor. Researching this I am sure was a huge project. Knowing Felix it was probably a real treat. His piece shows how far radio has come and how far it has plunged "serving in the public interest."
Radio is killing itself because of neglect. KOMO AM appears to be the only AM station that cares about news and the community. And they are in the top 5, the ONLY AM station in the top ten!
If the big broadcast bunch doesn't tend to AM it will be cast aside and given to police.
