Dave Ross will pull the plug, throw the switch, slay a small four-legged animal and fo, rmally say goodbye to 710KIRO as we know it at 11:55a THURSDAY April 2. The 710 KHz location has been news gab for over 80 years.
(The ceremony was delayed one day in order to April Fool BlatherWatch:
were told it was to happen yesterday).
Sports talk 710AM ESPN will be launched in the hallowed location Monday, April 6.
In the interim, the station will play a mash-up of Mariners' spring training games, and ads wrapped with what's called "stunting," looped announcements telling listeners of the format change and directing them to the old news and talk format with Greggg & Jane, Dave & Dori and Flotsam & Jetsam at KIROFM over at 97.3. This according to GM/PD Rod Arquette.
The games are Thursday through Saturday: if there's no baseball, (like on Sunday) it'll be solid stunting.
News talk has been simulcast over there since August 12.
On Monday, (April 6) on baseball's opening day 710AM ESPN officially launches on the 710AM dial at 3a with Mike and Mike in the Morning; then The Herd with Colin Cowherd at 7a.
I assume it's Wednesday, April 1, not Tuesday - correct?

So are they officially changing the call letters to something else, or staying with KIRO-AM at the top of the hour?

It will be called, 710 ESPN. All these truly auspicious events will indeed come down Wednesday.

Officially the station must retain legal call letters. They may call it "710 ESPN" or whatever they wish, but will have to identify once per hour with the official call letters and city of license. Unless a change is applied for with the FCC, this will continue to be "KIRO Seattle". The "AM" designation is not a federal requirement.
