Frank "Shiver" Shiers, former KIRO talk host, and KBSG oldies jock (who calls everyone "dude," even girls) is back at it on KIRO tonight with the blow-by-blow minutia about the weather.
Jennifer "Stormy" Harriman is giving "driver-to-driver coverage" and is taking callers on KOMO1000 midst breaking storm news.
Both stations say they'll be on all night reporting road conditions, emergency announcements, storm horrors, road closures; and neverendending blabber about horizontal snow, compact snow & ice, carbon monoxide; full-blown blizzards; four wheel drive, chains, traction tires; big dumps, big rigs; wind chill factor, flashlight picnics; having sex without talking your clothes off; heating coffee with car batteries; thawing frozen toddlers, etc.
That's funny. I was home on Thursday morning and listening to Dave Ross take weather/snow condition calls for three hours.
Why is it the few times I'm home and get to hear Ross - a favorite of mine - he succumbs to winging it and talking about the weather.
There's only so much there there when it snows. I guess some people like it.
The best time to talk about education is when teachers are home and can call in.

and lets also add that is also a time when many parents are home and able to call in.
while having the providers give insight it is also important for the consumer/customer to provide their input on what they are getting.
to date, i've been pleased with what i'm getting for my kids. a safe/secure/educational/positive environment with professionals at the helm.
for some reason, little things like the fact that my principal seems to know every child at her school by name is important.
anyway, I digress. back to snow.

Currently raining in PR, wonder if it'll snow..ha

I was happy to hear "Live and Local" again on Saturday Night KIRO. Tuned in again Sunday AM to check conditions before heading to the Seahawks game and it was the same old syndicated weekend stuff...so I turned to KOMO. When will Bonniville learn that Live and Local will get them more listeners. Welcome back for the night Frank.

I am a weather geek and I love the minute by minute, blow by blow reports from people who are out in this stuff. I watch the weather channel for fun, and Storm Trackers is one of my favorite shows on TV. I streamed KIRO after reading this, but they had already gone to the finance guy. Right now I have the police/fire/WDOT scanner frequencies on, streaming KATU in Portland, and have the weather on the TV. Give me more!

OK Sparky, that explains why we get along in spite of politics. I have been listening to the damn scanner while the radio is on talking about snow. We are both geeks. ;-]
Glad you have power. What are you going to do to not waste the bath tub water? Maybe you can invite the neighbors horses in to drink it.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one who enjoys this. It was somehow comforting to listen to Frank talk about "community" and how important radio is in an emergency. To think that at one point I thought he was almost unlistenable ... I hope Frank got home safely last night. I hope Dori slept at Qwest Field.

Shiers was a little hard to take, but he was sure better than that humorless woman on KOMO. She sounded like a newsreader who was pressed into making conversation...

Where did you get that picture of the hulk, Michael? He looks pissed.
Posted by: Shilly | December 21, 2008 at 11:15 AM
It's actually T008, still angry at the Dori Monson Show...but refusing to turn the dial. Ha
Posted by: Duffman | December 21, 2008 at 11:55 AM
...as Dori emphasizes he's got the most 'accidentally' listened to Show in America
Posted by: Duffman | December 21, 2008 at 12:01 PM
spot on duff-master...
not only is he the most listened to host but many of these same people feel compelled to tell others how much they don't listen to him.
dori must laugh his ass off when walking his dog star...
kind of funny to see the acrobatics one goes through to avoid saying that they won't miss his show.
his pre and post game football show is damn good.

Praise the lord; it is the last football game of the season! That means that baseball season can't be too far away; I feel renewed already. Fitting for the shortest day of the year, the days will be getting longer. Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone.

How dare you Duff and Puts ! Say something positive about Dori Monson - that is blasphemy on this blog. (tongue firmly in cheek)
Of course, the resentment is shallow and politicized and often laughable. Kind of like the episode on Seinfeld where he is repeatedly attacked by Kathy Griffin (a noted loony leftist wack-job - I'd say emotionally unstable) for being the devil, just because he is and the debate is over... (insert progressive talking points)

Do you think the horse is okay?
Thank god I've got a working furnace this time!
Do you have your scanners set for weather checks or police scans? Do you both just scan weather?
How does that work?
Posted by: joanie | December 21, 2008 at 01:53 PM
I hope the horse is ok....no way of telling.
The scanner picks up the frequencies of state, local and county law enforcement, fire, WDOT. You have to enter the frequencies in and then it scans the airwaves to find those specific frequencies you have entered. It is busy busy......been snowing hard for the last two hours.

Hey, chucks, did you sign up for a typepad account? I clicked on your live name and expected to see your workplace.
You gonna start a blog? How about an RV blog?
Posted by: joanie | December 21, 2008 at 02:49 PM
spot on April May June
Soon it will be time for Pitchers/Catchers to report to Spring Training.
Hope springs eternal.
KS,
You nailed it.

April May June - you said it well..
"You gonna start a blog? How about an RV blog?"
One's own blog is a pasttime and virtual black hole to take the place of a more exciting and productive life that could be. Is there a blogmeister around that would be honest enough to offer that up ?

What a great day to have started my Chrismas shopping. That was fun.
Sparky, I only check that WSDOT site in times like this. Same with them on the scanner. Only when the weather gets interesting. I, in my own nerdly way have been listening to the scanner since high school. Back in the day when you had to buy chrystals for the frequency's you wanted to hear. It's a good way to know the bad guys that live amoungst us. Other times you can help catch a bad guy if you are in the right place at the right time.
I have been signed up with type pad for a while. I just thought it was something Bla'M was doing to styfle the id theft that goes on 'round here. Hech, I hijacked Duffy's id the other day (though I thought I did it in an honorable way).
When Fremont tells me how great my spelling is and you Joanie tells me how great my structure is
and Sparky reports how awsome my grammer is, that is when I will start a blog. Not real soon, I'm sure.
Posted by: Chuckvsteeleii | December 21, 2008 at 04:55 PM
KS, you left yourself wide open there, but, in the spirit of the Season, I will let it go.
Posted by: sparky | December 21, 2008 at 06:17 PM
Find KS at SP. I'm not so forgiving, Sparky.
chucks, that typepad screen was confusing and I started signing up but then thought better of it. I exited out and figured there must be a problem. I didn't want a blog page.
So, now that you have one, why not go for it and create something new like stories form the open road. Might have been a serendipitous move...

KS, just as a point of knowledge, and to stop my grandmother from spinning in her grave, its "oy" vey.
