Listeners were mystified by the voices coming from their radio this morning when they tuned in to The Dave Ross Show (KIRO m-f, 9a-12p).
"Who the hell is that?" a worried Blatherrite wrote, "are they Canadians?"
Turns out they were African-Americans, never heard in Seattle in the middle of the AM dial in the middle of the day.
Sir Mix-A-Lot, the Seattle Grammy Award-winning rapper and producer fills in for Ross today and tomorrow in a groundbreaking Seattle radio event.
The congenial Mr. A-Lot, a regular on NPR's late, great Rewind with Bill Radke actually inspired other black people to call in to KIRO.
"Wow," writes a reader to BlatherWatch, " I thought the only Negroes we had on talk radio were Walt Williams or Eddie Vedder.
It's doubtful this is the beginning of a trend: fill-ins this week for Dave will be Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, Thursday; and Transportation Secretary Doug McDonald on Friday.
Ummm...Isn't Carl Jeffers a regular on KIRO, including his regular midday Friday spot with Dave Ross?

Is Carl black?

Carl Jeffers lives in the ghetto of weekend radio.

I wouldn't say too many African- Americans call in to Carl. It's just more white political talk for white people. Black people don't have talk radio, even on black stations. Maybe they don't want it.

Black folks do like talk radio and I thought the rump ratifier was dang funny. I like Dave but you have to admit this A.M. was affording light mirth and laughter. Just wait 'til Thursday and Friday we'll be back to white bread....

That Monica lady that called in today to sir mix/alot today claiming Seattle is a racist town, is she the lady (I think she goes by the name Cindy) who leaves messages for Dori? Sure sounded like.

Have you ever heard Jennifer's calls to Dori?

I didn't know who he was, but I am enjoying his show. It is good to hear a different voice.

Didn't he have kind of a test-run show on Saturday/Sunday afternoons a few years ago?

When I lived in St. Louis 15 yrs ago there was a black talk host named Onion Horton. A madman a la Louis Farrakhan, but great talk radio and very popular among both black and white listeners. Don't forget about Larry Elder, probably the greatest host currently on any Seattle area station (albeit buried at 3-5am).

agree with you on 'Elder', wutitiz (interesting moniker) :o)

If Goldstein can have a talk show in Seattle, its a cryin' shame that Sir Mix a Lot doesn't have one.
