[Seattle is] the only market that has rejected me since the day I left it. ~ Glenn Beck
Glenn Beck, 43, the hypermanic, chubby-cheeked, arm-waving, spittle-spraying, grenade-launching, sex-obsessed, fag-baiting, right-wing cheer-king for violence against diversity is being considered for the talk line-up on Washington Post Radio, the DC news station that's a partnership of the newspaper and Bonneville International.
WaPo Radio, launched 14 months ago is faced, they say, "...with continuing financial losses and stubbornly low ratings."
So bringing in knuckle-breathers is on the table. Maybe, goes the theory, you can dredge the muck in the Tidal Basin for listeners just like him.
"Beck is an interesting guy," said Joel Oxley, Bonneville's top local executive told WaPo. "He does a good job in some other markets."
Live 9-noon Eastern.Beck is currently syndicated by Premiere in around 250 stations as well as XM Satellite Radio.
He's only heard in our state at cow-power stations in Walla Walla and Yakima. There's reasons for that, to which we're getting
.
There have been rumors for months that Bonneville might bring Beck into Seattle at one of their newly acquired stations, KIRO, or KTTH. The co-inky-dink theorists are buzzing: Bonneville is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Salt Lake City. Beck is a Mormon convert.
Rumors also that Salem Broadcast's KKOL will pick him up, despite their fundamentalist worldview about Mormons (read this flaming anti-Beck, anti-Mormon blog on TownHall.com, the religious right's editorial page run by Salem, and blog home of Michael Medved and many more reaction rightists.
Beck was born in Everett, lived in Mountlake Terrace, Mount Vernon, the Sumner-Puyallup area, and Bellingham: In a puff piece last year, P-I's Bill Virgin wrote this about Beck:
When he left the region at age 18, having graduated from high school in Bellingham, "I just wanted to get really good and come home," he says. Coming home, at least in radio terms, hasn't happened yet. "We are always interested and pitching in Seattle. It's the only market that has rejected me since the day I left it."
Beck started as a Top 40 DJ at KUBE when he was a teenager. We've heard
from more than one radio pro in this town- Beck burned his bridges
around here early in his career.
"He's not so much asshole as he is an ass," a former co-worker, now a program director, told us.
Washington DC is a liberal town, and it could be risky installing such a right-wing bomber as Beck- especially in the pc post-Imus broadcasting atmosphere.
Bonneville's vice president of news Jim Farley told WaPo they'd be looking for "more conversational elements [and less] straight news," for the ailing DC station.
Beck's "elements" are ahell of a lot more (or less) than "conversational!"
By forsaking traditional Mormonic civility, Beck has grabbed every headline he could by trying to ignite the racial and ethnic slime of the male knuckle-dragging wing of the conservative base.
(Slime is hard to get lit, but once it gets going, almost impossible to extinguish: Oklahoma City is a good example).
So far, it ain't working. As Chris Achorn at My Two Sense has noted, ratings for his CNN Headline News show at the end of May were lower than when he starteddespite all the promotion and his regular commentary since January on ABC's Good Morning America.
Just last Monday, Media Matters video show Beck speculating that Rep. Dennis Kucinich's wife was under the influence of "some sort of ... date rape drug," one that is "not powerful enough to actually knock you out, but it's powerful enough to, like, make you think that you're not standing next to Dennis Kucinich and making out with him." Maybe, he said, the right drug could be "cyanide," adding: "That would be the only thing that would really dull the senses enough. Even then, your dead body would be like, 'Dennis Kucinich has his tongue in my mouth.' "
Beck has made some kind of name for himself with flaming sound bites against Democrats, Muslims, Arabs, Mexicans, and women. On his radio and television programs. He called President Jimmy Carter a "waste of skin," Cindy Sheehan a "prostitute." He's referred to Katrina victims as "scumbags;" Mexican immigrants as "terrorists," "outlaws," "dirt bags" and "lawbreakers,"
He's advocated nuking Venezuela and the Middle East.
In 2006, he interviewed Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim elected to Congress, and told him "What I feel like saying is, 'Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies."
Media Matters for America:
He frequently criticizes Clinton, calling her the "Antichrist" and a "stereotypical bitch," and comparing her health care plan to Hitler's "decree permitting euthanasia." Beck also helped advance the claim, originally made on the website InsightMag.com, that Clinton's presidential campaign discovered (and disclosed) that Sen. Barack Obama spent school years at a madrassa while living in Indonesia. The accusation about Clinton was unsubstantiated, and the underlying claim that Obama attended a madrassa was debunked.
"He frequently criticizes Clinton, calling her the "Antichrist" and a "stereotypical bitch," and comparing her health care plan to Hitler's "decree permitting euthanasia."
...THEN he's obviously a non-event!

The "flaming sound bites" against women seems wrong to me. Shame on him.
Pretty much the rest of his views are right on target.
I have never seen nor heard his program, but it sure sounds interesting.
Best regards
Chuck

How could the same patch of earth nurture a Bla'M and a Beck?! Not only is Buck uneducated and unethical, he is as uninspiring as jello. If he roused the rabble a bit (like O'Donnell or even Grace), he'd be worth a dial twist, but, he can't even represent his POV with spice...ketchup! Jello and ketchup!

"The "flaming sound bites" against women seems wrong to me. Shame on him." Chux, elucidate please. What sounds wrong? flaming sound bytes? Please explain yourself...
Posted by: Fremont | June 07, 2007 at 03:35 PM
Geez Freemont, first you make (encourage anyway) me to spell, now you make me go to the dictionary.
Explain? OK. I was just playing off of Bla'Ms post above. The paragraph re Beck's having made some kind of name for himself.
Posted by: chucks | June 07, 2007 at 03:48 PM
I like him because he says what conservatives are thinking.

Posted by: FREMONT | June 07, 2007 at 07:53 PM
Brian, you should go back to your bitching about styblehead and hooting like a turkey. Otherwise your taste in radio is terrible and you shouldn't try to enter into conversations with people who can think and spell.

I've listened to Beck briefly several times while working in my classroom. Every time I've found him boring, shallow and his claims completely unfounded. Is that what you like about him, chucks?

Steven Alert: "...in a surprising move Fox and its parent company News Corporation have now decided global warming is very real and Rupert Murdoch – the global media mogul who owns the company - says he's going to do something about it.
"...It's a massive effort to reduce our own energy use and carbon emissions...By 2010 we've set the target that each one of our businesses will be carbon neutral, so we'll reach zero carbon emissions."
You behind the curve, Steven?

"It's not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold...
or something much more colorful like that.
It's not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ord'nary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
or stars in the sky.
But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain,
or tall like a tree.
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be."

Malloy was going on and on last night about how Air America is not liberal radio anymore. Dem radio . . . but not liberal. Used Lionel as an example.
Also, they have included programming with multiple hosts more often and pared Laura Flanders back to an hour on the weekend. I liked Laura's show. They've added something called Clout which is sort of amateurish. Also a Mark Green, Huffington and Bob Kerrey hour about which I'm still deciding.
I really miss The Young Turks on Sunday night and they've been pared back from three to two hours.

Posted by: Duffman | June 08, 2007 at 09:04 AM
Did Chucks just say racism and lying are OK by him? I guess we know where you stand now!
Beck is what you would call a second rate hack is hoping his attempts at being controversial are going to pay off. He seems like the type who is looking to match his show's target with the right-wing slobbering hate-monger because he believes that will equate to popularity and make him money. He's just yet another leech attached to Limbaugh's ample posterior looking for scraps.

oooooh, UGLY image!! :)

Beck is the King of Smarm.
Posted by: Mungo | June 08, 2007 at 09:33 AM
No, Chuck (that would be me) did not say racism and lying are ok. Racism and lying happen. Religious and sexual bigotry happens too. I just choose not to participate, thank you very much.
You and I have enough real stuff to disagree on cpp3. No need for you to make anything up.
Posted by: chucks | June 08, 2007 at 03:40 PM
Chuck, then what did you mean when you said "The "flaming sound bites" against women seems wrong to me. Shame on him.
Pretty much the rest of his views are right on target."?
Since racism and outright lies about issues Beck has discussed got a free pass from you, when you state the "rest of his views are right on target."
Who needs to 'make anything up' when you sat there and made the statement. Did you fail to read and comprehend the article or something? Its OK to indicate that you agree with Beck when he smears racial groups and states incorrect information to suit his political affiliation. Just stand up and say so and quit hiding behind your statements.

Flaming sound bites against democrats. Can't flame them enough. We on the right get torched as well.
F.S.B. against Muslims. The most brutal religion of peace in all history.
F.S.B. against Arabs. That would be the oil rich bastards funding the peace loving Muslims so that they can attack us infidels across the world.
F.S.B. against Mexicans. Well, if you mean the condemnation of the border crashers coming across the southern border of these United States, driving down the wages of working Americans to the benefit of corporations, at the same time sucking up our valuable social service resources. Well yes, flame um. And build the damn fence.
F.S.B. against women. That is just plain wrong. (I think this is where I am supposed to go "hootie hoo".
As I said in my original post. I have never seen or heard Beck's program. I just assume that when a conservative is flamed by the left, it is probably twisted and distorted.
Posted by: chucks | June 08, 2007 at 07:25 PM
Well, chucks, you ass-uming is right up Beck's alley. You and he seem to hate half the world. At least he gets well-paid for it; what do you get out of all that hate?
Posted by: joanie for nevetS | June 08, 2007 at 08:14 PM
Thanks for the alert there Joanie.
Behind the curve, no. Murdoch's view about global warming means as much to me as your view about the subject. Surprised.
Posted by: nevets | June 08, 2007 at 08:22 PM
Sorry Joanie, meant to say,
Murdoch's view about global warming means as much to me as Al Gore tells you what your view about the subject should be.
Posted by: nevets | June 08, 2007 at 08:27 PM
Why, betraying your bible, Faux News, Steven? Isn't that heresy?
Everyone should be listenting to Malloy . . . he's continuing the rant that Randi started about Paris Hilton apparently crying "mommy" in court today. Randi was even parodying Chris Matthews on Hardball. God, it is such good radio tonight . . . Randi should get some kind of award for her handling of this Paris Hilton stuff and the way media handles hard news. She kept replaying the breaking news which interrupted Peter Pace talking about his ouster as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs for the real news of the day: Hilton's return to jail.
If anybody can make Americans looks stupid, Hilton can and is. I love Randi and Malloy!

chucks and ass-backwards nevetS, give yourselves a learning experience and turn to channel 9 - KCTS. You won't be sorry.
Posted by: joanie | June 08, 2007 at 09:02 PM
You're being inconsistent, Chuck. First you said that I was putting words in your mouth by indicating that you were a racist. Then you respond by backing up all of my points one by one. Thanks for making my argument for me.
You have managed to smear all Muslims, Arabs and Mexicans...you should feel great about yourself now. Pray tell how many Muslims, Arabs or Mexicans do you really know? Or do you simply get your opinion of an entire group of fucking people spoon fed to you by ?
You are pretty predictably the worst that America offers to the world in your broad strokes of people for whom you have no understanding and no experience. I'd like to congratulate you for buying in 100% to stupid agendas without actually bothering to learn the truth for yourself. The mere fact that you would buy anything someone as idiotic as Beck would have you believe without burdening yourself with that pesky thing called reality speaks volumes for your lack of understanding for what it means to be a real American. More than likely you'd fit in better in 1940 Germany. :)
Posted by: cowpotpi3 | June 08, 2007 at 09:22 PM
Wish I could joanie, but the wife and grand brat have the tv. All I can do is sit at this box and get insulted by experts.
For the official Blatherwatch record though, I do not hate Mexicans. They are a beautiful people with a very interesting culture. My first ex-wife is a Mexican-American. Makes my first two kids half of same. Her grand parents came here legally in the 1930s and worked their asses off like all other immigrants of that time.
We still need a fence. Makes for good neighbors.
Posted by: chucks | June 08, 2007 at 09:31 PM
Uh-oh! When one person tells you you're thinking like a Nazi, ingore it. When two people tell you you're thinking like a Nazi, think about it. When three people tell you you're thinking like a Nazi, you might make some making some changes in your attitude, chucks.
Who out there will be the third?
Posted by: joanie | June 08, 2007 at 09:36 PM
Well, chucks, I guess we looked at all that hateful name-calling in your post and thought you were hateful . . . can't imagine why.
Posted by: joanie | June 08, 2007 at 09:38 PM
Sig Alert! Third post!
chucks, no wonder you're so behind the curve . . . the TV in your household taken over by the kids? C'mon, at our school we just celebrated turn-off-the-tv week. Not much information for adults on Sesame Street is there. Why don't you google a few good blogs . . . like ThinkProgress, Sirota, MyDD, Firedoglake . . . you got some learnin' to do.
Right now Moyers is doing a piece on Afghanistan. His guest is Christian Parenti. We sure screwed that country up . . . I guess there's no oil there. Maybe Bush's family should get into the poppy trade . . .

BTW, chucks, what's your grandkid doing up at almost 10? If he's old enough to be up at 10, he's old enough to watch a program of substance like Moyer's Journal.
No wonder we have an illiterate and uninformed citizenry.
Posted by: joanie | June 08, 2007 at 09:44 PM
No cpp3, Only illegal alien Mexicans, Muslims who want to kill me and you, Arabs who want to help Muslims kill you and me.
Forgive me if I can not tell who is who. Until I can tell which ones are the terrorist, and their supporters, I shall remain sceptical.
Guess that makes me a racist in your book. I can live with that.
Posted by: chucks | June 08, 2007 at 09:46 PM
Tonight is a reward for my grand child. Her last day of school was today and she scored straight A's. Her bed time is 8:30 the rest of the year. By the way joanie, she scored in the 96 percentile on the Tera Nova test and she hit 160% of her goal on her read to lead program. I am very proud of her.
Slam my politics all day long. But we are raising a wonderful child. So leave her alone.
Posted by: chucks | June 08, 2007 at 10:15 PM
Leave her alone? I don't remember slamming her at all. As I recall, I'm slamming you for putting her in front of a tv late at night. Get yer facts straight, fella.
Congratulations to her. She must take after the other set of grandparents - right?
You've done well with her, chucks.
Posted by: joanie | June 08, 2007 at 10:29 PM
Well Joanie if you would have read the whole interview instead of bits and pieces you might have read this:
"And what we're doing as a business, this is not a journalistic mandate. And our company prides itself on journalistic independence and that's at the core of what our company does."
Its all business. And from what Webber is saying there is that although Murdoch will pursue to be Carbon Neutral, his News Department (Fox News) will not be handcuffed by his decision. Unlike what I said above about Al Gore making your view for you.
Fox News my bible? No Joanie. Nice try. But I do watch and listen to their news. And think it is "Fair and Balanced".
Posted by: nevets | June 08, 2007 at 11:20 PM
Chuck, you summed up your ignorance and backward racism when you said this:
"Forgive me if I can not tell who is who. Until I can tell which ones are the terrorist, and their supporters, I shall remain sceptical. Guess that makes me a racist in your book. I can live with that."
First of all, you never answered my question: How many of these people do you actually know? Your story about the ex-wife is nice, but she doesn't qualify in any of the above categories. The fact that you would hide behind that half answer shows your ignorance. Just tell us you don't know anything about any of those groups and just get your ideas and information from right wing hate mongers and march to whatever they wire into your brain. I can accept that.
Lastly, this is not my definition of racism. This is the classic definition of racism. The fact that you've pretty much admitted to being a racist and not wanting to broaden your horizons make you about as honest and forward thinking as the Taliban. Congrats.
Posted by: cowpotpi3 | June 09, 2007 at 09:09 AM
Yeah chucks: you should get your facts from a reliable source such as moveon.org and other similar anti-war movements who supported this fuckin farce:
From a KOMO News Report:
"A 23-year-old Tacoma man who claimed he took part in war crimes in Iraq and earned a Purple Heart as a U.S. Army soldier pleaded guilty in federal court in Seattle today to making false statements about his military status. Jesse A. Macbeth, formally of Phoenix, faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he's sentenced on September 21st. How can the supporters of a guy like this ever be taken seriously again?"

I wonder if Grace's alter ego wears a dress when he posts as her..kind of like the "Glen or Glenda" movie...
Posted by: sparky | June 09, 2007 at 09:34 AM
I wonder if you'll suck up everything you hear on your fuckin liberal stations that supports your cause now....what a bunch of spoon-fed idiots. Continue on in your half-assed pseudo-intellect discussions. What a joke.
Posted by: Grace | June 09, 2007 at 09:43 AM
I will take that as a yes...
Posted by: sparky | June 09, 2007 at 01:47 PM
The only thing pseudo intelligent here is you "Grace." Do you care to debate the voracity of my news sources? Too bad I don't get news from Moveon or Fox News or any other partisan source. You see I have the intellectual capacity to ask myself who is saying what and why. You're clearly the joke here because you can't debate issues. All we hear is your whining for people to get lives or other such drivel...yet here you are.
So are you going to bring anything to the table or shall we just count on another one of your verbal temper tantrums?
Posted by: cowpotpi3 | June 09, 2007 at 01:51 PM
Unlike you and the 'regulars' on this blog I have better things to do with my time than play computer games with people who fake intelligence. oh sure...now your 'distancing' yourself from moveon.org...because you and many others here caught caught 'exposed'...hahaha...suckers! Get a life why dont you.
