~ Boyo, the rumors about who's the next KIRO PD are rife around Radio Town- First it's ****** from KVI, then it's ******* from San Francisco's FREE FM. Then we heard it was **** from KIOD in Miami. Dennis Kelly assures us (and those KIRO worry-warts who've been writing) that it's not him. They say there's no chance Kris Olinger will be back, either. One thing we're pretty sure of- the decision will be
made sooner than later. And oh yeah- the hampsters have a new dance.
~ the rabid Michael Savage (KTTH m-f, 3-6p) was signed last week by talent giant, Creative Artists Agency; but no sooner had they put his name on their impressive client list, than Savage savaged another CAA client, Melissa Etheridge, who, as she accepted an Oscar at the Academy Awards, thanked her wife, Tammy Lyn Michaels. Savage ranted on the air: "I don't like a woman married to a woman. It makes me want to puke. ... I want to vomit when I hear it. ... it's child abuse." It took them all of 24 hours- before the prestigious CAA dumped him.
~ The doctor is in. Former talk host Mike Webb's felony conviction last month has made it nigh impossible for him to work in radio. Hence, from his Web site, he live-streams random political readings, music, clips from cable TV shows- and now, call-in medical advice. DIAL A DOC, 1-2p Thursdays. He'll address everything medical, he says, from sports medicine to addiction. While unconventional- to physician for a convicted felon, is a natural next step from a radio career.
~ Sorrrrree...we'd love to like it. But we tried listening to Ron & Don (KIRO m-f, 4-7p) again today. Gotta say it- it's lowest common denominator dumbed-down trash; tabloid radio with few redeeming qualities. We've long thought the Big Dumb Shits would succeed, and we don't doubt that now. But this kind of guffawing, studied FM puerility may, in the end, be the end of AM radio. It's depressing. Praise Cthulhu for Rachel Maddow! (KPTK m-f, 3-5p).
~ The right-wing harangue-site against MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, Olbermannwatch.com; posted this in place of its front page last week. There
is no disguising the fact that we have been extremely unhappy with the
recent decision of NBC Universal to not only retain Keith Olbermann for
four more years but to elevate him in an unprecedented fashion. We had
held out hope that MSNBC would allow Olbermann's contract to expire
even up until the last few weeks. But the deal is done and our
Countdown Clock expired at midnight on March 1, 2007.
Given this, we have come to the conclusion that we have done more
harm than good over the past 2+ years in keeping Olbermann in the
public eye at a time when few were watching his show and even less
cared about his assault on the journalistic standards we hold dear. So,
after careful consideration and consultation with the entire staff, we
have decided the time has come to retire OlbermannWatch.com.
It's been a great run. We certainly had a lot of fun running the
site but it's just been increasingly difficult to maintain our
enthusiasm as Olbermann's ratings have increased and a compliant media
has done everything to boost Olbermann and his show. Delicious, eh?: the page has now been changed to this: olbermannwatch.com

~ N-O spells NO!- Shiers, Ron, Don, Billo, Dori, Malkin, Kirby, John Carlson! What Bill Maher said about Cheney is not the same as what Ann Coultergeist (The Conscience of Conservatism) said about John Edwards. What bothers us about what the parsimonious Presbyterian said is not her use of the word faggot- it's the implication that the butch and very straight John Edwards is gay. The assertion may seem ridiculous to you and us, but to the weak-minded and susceptible to right-wing one-size-fits-all rhetoric, it's homophobic kudzu deftly sown ready to spring into life. The right-wingers have been fag-baiting straight Democrats for a year now- and prepping their dupes to suspect Edwards' sexuality by reviling him as vain and pretty. Now she's started a whisper campaign that will echo throughout the south, forever.
~ Our commenter Tommy 008 wrote this: Now add Frank Shiers to the list of local and national conservatives and repugs who are candycoating what Coulter said, and refusing to codemn her or even mildly call her out for her hate speech. Unbelievable. Shiers, ever the jackass, is following O'Reilly's lead and using asinine euphemism's like "bomb-thrower" and "poor choice of words". Poor choice of words, my ass, Shiers you phony little bastard. if Blatherwatch had called you a faggot, you wouldn't be calling it a "poor choice of words".
Well, may be soon we'll get to see what direction KIRO will lean and if there is any truth to the speculation that they might gear up to support Mitt Romney?

BTW: Any comment on Mrs Clinton's recently acquired southern accent? I thought it very cute and appealing.
Posted by: Duffman | March 06, 2007 at 07:03 AM
I have watched the "report" on the candidates' accents...and while I think it is much ado about nothing--the election is a long time away so i guess the media has to really dig to have a story every day--there are some people whose "ear" for language is very acute. I know personally someone who picks up the accent of wherever this person is visiting and it is an unconscious thing--they dont realize they are doing it. I spent a summer in Montana around people from the midwest and when I got home my parents asked me why I talked funny...If you listen to tapes of Hillary talking when they lived in Arkansas, she had an accent then...
My point is, who cares? What they say is more important to me than what they sound like saying it.
Posted by: sparky | March 06, 2007 at 07:50 AM
Agreed; who cares indeed. I personally thought is was complimentary to her...far better than the F* bombs she has previously been reported as using...ha; she (and all candidates) have to be so careful as everything is being scrutinized to the nth degree, by both sides and the media.
Posted by: Duffman | March 06, 2007 at 08:08 AM
My "who cares" comment was directed at CNN, by the way, Duffman. I get tired of the media who can't do a decent job reporting real news so they stoop to this...
Funny how the "F bombs" from Hillary are so offensive to some, yet Cheney got a free ride when he ripped one off on the floor of the Senate.
Posted by: sparky | March 06, 2007 at 08:48 AM
F*bombs are offensive to me no matter the source. I would especially not want them said by our next President, Mrs Clinton. She has so much to offer otherwise.

Yet another politician bites the dust...scoot on over to jail, Scooter!
Posted by: Duffman | March 06, 2007 at 09:26 AM
The F bomb is unnecessary under most circumstances anyway. It does not even have the good old shock value it had in the good ol' days. It is just annoying. Its real value is for anonymous posters on computers to feel powerful and macho. You know, the folks who get bossed around on the job and at the bus stop. It is their chance to get even without risk of consequence, like getting beat up or fired.
But it should be easy to differentiate between cursing a senator on the floor of the senate and cursing ones personal servants.
Clinton's problem is treating state police officers and Secret Service agents to the F bomb when she wants them to serve her personal needs. When an agents job is to protect her and she curses him because she wants him or her to carry her shopping bag rather than watch for risks to her life. That is out of line, IMHO.
As for her accent. It was just phony. That is all that needs to be said about that. Does not add or subtract anything regarding her ability or inability to govern.
Same goes for Obama's new found accent.
Libby was just found guilty in a court of law. Now he can go to jail.
Posted by: chucks | March 06, 2007 at 09:59 AM
chucks, do you have proof that Hillary told a secret service man to carry her shopping bags, or did you just hear that..

Lancaster New Era, a Pennsylvania daily newspaper, is the first paper to permanently cancel Coulter's column. Verizon and AT&T have pulled all their ads from her website.
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 06, 2007 at 04:04 PM
Fom Coulter's website- "Obscene, profane, vulgar or threatening posts will not be tolerated." Coulter is now calling the term "faggot" a "schoolyard taunt". Coulter is an expert at twisting the truth. Faggot has never been and is not now considered a "schoolyard taunt". It's considered hate speech by mainstream society. A schoolyard taunt is "sissy" or "wuss", which is what the bitch is now claiming, dishonestly, that she meant by calling Edwards the F word. Ann, you meant to imply that Edwards was gay, you lying bitch, and you got called out on it, that's all. You're like the serial killer who thinks they're smarter and cleverer than all the cops, and eventually gets caught. Your mulish inability and refusal to apologize is now starting the demise of your career.
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 06, 2007 at 04:44 PM
Spot on; I think you called it exactly as it is and as it will be for her.

I thought the word faggot meant "a bundle of sticks". Silly me raised in New England, they are so backward there. BTW you are all Homos...........sapiens that is.
Posted by: Recife | March 06, 2007 at 06:44 PM
Funny, Recife.
chucks: if the f word is simply annoying, let it go. Annoying is what a lot of things in life are . . . no big deal to me.
As for anybody's accents, reread Sparky's post. She got it right.
And for you to say whether or not Obama's accent is real or feigned is very arrogant. You don't know and neither do I.
I have taught with a lot of black women and many of them talk differently when with their community than they do when with the white community. In fact, I was - in the early seventies - the only white person in Good Hope (or New Hope) Baptist Church here in Seattle. I went to hear my friend sing in the choir.
Conservatives think they know so much about everything and everybody. It is a mistake to be so judgmental. Evaluate Hillary on her message rather than on the way she messages. You'll be a better voter if you do. Remember, she was the wife of a southern gov at one time . . .
Truly I don't hate Bush just because he mangles the English language. It is what he's done to our country that disturbs me.
Posted by: joanie | March 06, 2007 at 09:21 PM
joanie,
The question is still out there about Clinton treating the common man like crap. Do you find it acceptable that she curses government employees hired to protect her. Is it ok for the principal at a school to order a staff member or maybe the police officer on campus to get his or her f***ing ass over here and carry my shopping bag?
If she needs a valet, than she should hire a valet. If she can find one desperate enough to work under those conditions. But even if one is that desperate for a job, should he or she have to put up with abuse to work?
Would you be willing to work for George Bush under those circumstances? Or Hillary? Bill Gates?
She may think that she is royalty.
She is not.
Posted by: chucks | March 07, 2007 at 10:47 AM
No she isnt. Neither is Barbara Bush, who has a similar view about how people can be treated. Chucks, are you surprised that the wealthy and powerful people live by their own rules? I dont like it anymore than you do, but what do you propose we do to change it?
Posted by: sparky | March 07, 2007 at 11:27 AM
Would you kindly state your source for stating that about Barbara Bush (I assume you mean the former President's wife); that's hard for me to believe?
Posted by: Duffman | March 07, 2007 at 11:40 AM
The commercial break ended and before another could come on Bill O'Reilly cut in, sitting at his desk, for a quick show promo. "Coming up on The O'Reilly Factor", he said, with his big blarney grin, "Bush'es surge seems to be working, and Al Franken throws another bomb at the Democratic Party winter meetings. This time the character called me a faggot , in front of a room full of cheering, laughing Democrats." Of course this never happened, and we all know that if it did happen Bill wouldn't be talking about euphemeistically about Franken throwing a "bomb", or grinning about it, which is how he handled the Coulter 2007 CPAC hate speech incident.
Posted by: Tommy008 | March 07, 2007 at 11:44 AM
Expose it. Condemn it. Fight it. Just do not accept it. Do not reward it.
Just like racism and other bigoted issues are fought in our country. Raise a stink!
I have worked for some pretty wealthy people in my career. They all demand performance, but most were respectful and appreciative. The ones who were butt heads are no longer my employer. For that matter, most of them are out of business.
Posted by: chucks | March 07, 2007 at 11:50 AM
duffman, did you not hear her reference to the people stuck in the astrodome after Hurricane Katrina as getting a pretty good deal being there since they were "used to living in filth?" Did you not hear her say she did not want to know about casualties in Iraq because it upset her "beautiful mind"? I find those comments far more offensive than the F bomb.
Posted by: sparky | March 07, 2007 at 01:22 PM
Thank you; I'm indeed surprised that she made those comments and I will try to find the context that surrounded that (I've always admired her as a person). I didn't vote for her (or her husband) - and I AM planning to vote for Mrs Clinton, so I am much more interested in what she says and does...I think she has MUCH MORE to offer than F* words and I wouldn't discound her on just that basis.
Posted by: Duffman | March 07, 2007 at 01:34 PM
Duff is the last person to be saying this:
Would you kindly state your source for stating that about Barbara Bush (I assume you mean the former President's wife); that's hard for me to believe?
Seriously Duff. It was hard for us to believe your BS about Al Gore & Scott Ritter (using no source, and - when pressed - drudge & a Serbian fascist).
Conclusion: Fuck you. (and yes, you can quote me on that)

I notice that when you post you act as though you're speaking for the whole blog? Do you think you are?...it's "we", "us", etc do you possibly have an undulating personality complex...you might want to have that checked.
Finally, what part of 'ignore' dont you understand? You don't seem to honor your pledge to ignore my posts...hmmm, wonder why. And when you resort to bad words you expose your weakness.
I would just say God Bless and help you.
Posted by: Duffman | March 07, 2007 at 06:23 PM
Duff, merci's got it right about the source thing . . . and you know it!
But, I like your support for Hillary. I think she'd make a pretty good president but I don't share her values just like I didn't share Bill's in '96.
She shouldn't treat people that way if in fact she does. It is a classless way to talk to people who are serving you.
I think the wealthy on the left are probably very kind and considerate to their inferiors . . . and the conservatives are probably very unkind. I know, what a crock but I still believe it.
Hasn't it been said that "new money" tends to be arrogant and demanding while "old money" is tolerant and less self-conscious? Actually kinder and more accepting?
I bet Tommie knows about that.
Posted by: joanie | March 07, 2007 at 06:57 PM
Actually, I don't (think he/she's right on sources); I frankly provided so much source that it was probably over-sourced. The source was 'judged' to be inferior; I can't help that...it was my source. Discount as you will but don't discount because of labels or because of a particular political slant...examine the facts and discount accordingly.
I understand your siding with he/she - you'all appear to be blog partners, but I can't imagine you wanting ANYone to speak for you?
I am struggling with Mrs Clinton; I want to be reinforced in my support of her that's why I throw things out that can be discussed and explained because sometimes I get very confused at her inherent purpose? Obama and Edwards are viable choices but I really do feel that Mrs Clinton has some good ideas (and my favorite is health care for everyone) I actually thing that she (more than any others) IS concerned about this and has a plan.
Thank you.

He says to Michael Hoop: if Blatherwatch had called him a faggot, you wouldn't be calling it a "poor choice of words. You'd be saying "PROUD OF IT!!
