Steve

Joanie, you posted

"Steve . . . does that include all the generals that have been fired, demoted or otherwise turned coat?:

Maybe you need to reread my post.

I clearly posted

"Our Military Leadership is the finest out there in the world today Michael"

But a question, I don't recall a General going over the Iraqi side. A little help here please?

sparky

Ah, but Stevarino...what about THIS war? A protest over the wars you supposedly fought in woud be a little silly. The protests are about the IRAQ war, about which is what you demanded to know our "sacrifice."

So, get on the phone and tell those recruiters who have your number--the one I stole from you after I data mined your bank account and gave to them--that you are ready to make the sacrifice....

Andrew

joanie says "Andrew, you attacked my opinion from the start. And you ask how I came to give you a less than thoughtful response?"

Attacking opinion is a GOOD THING. I'm doing you a service by giving you a chance to test your ideas against differing viewpoints, but aparently you believe you're beyond reproach.

You advocate withdrawal in exchange for lots and lots of blood, and that viewpoint is valid, but unless you're a conservative, I expect you to show some evidence that you have thought about the repercussions of full withdrawal. Otherwise, you're committing the same atrocity as those non-thinkers who got us into the war without an exit strategy.

blathering michael

Oh horse shit, Steve. we've given the military leaders and Bush all the money they've asked for; we've done everything asked of us as citizens and taxpayers. Their strategies, tactics and policies have made only the violence increase, and we find ourselves stuck in a situation into which we know now we were deceived and manipulated. Today the Pentagon admitted that Al Queda is back again at near full strength with training camps and recruiting in Pakistan. We must withdraw, and we'd better start planning how to do that minimizing the inevitable bloodshed. We should impeach this president.

mercifurious

Steve's using yet another grand red-herring talking-point: "I sacrificed. You didn't. I get to talk. You get to listen"

The fatal flaw with this of course is civilian control of the military. The military - like any other government employees - are public servants. The military serve the will of the public - never the reverse.

You wan't the reverse, steve? There's half-a-dozen banana-republic military junta regimes in central/south america that would LOVE your brand of service.

Until then: I speak, you speak, we all speak. God bless America.

Note: now that another red-herring is set-aside perminently, perhaps Steve can actually deal with the core issues here. (I won't hold my breath)

coiler

it's the classic set-up, "were you in the military"? "sacrifice"
or some similar tactic to stifle the conversation. You know what they say about 'patriotism is the last vestige of a scoundrel.

lukobe

Wikipedia is a great first source but should never be used as one's last source.

I don't know what the solution is but I do fear for the consequences if we withdraw from Iraq all at once.

And I don't advocate bombing Iran but I am a bit afraid of what they might be up to.

Meanwhile, we're fighting amongst ourselves...

sparky

tony blair apparently does not share your concern...today he announced a time table for removing British troops..the first 1500 in the next couple of weeks and a total of 3000 by the end of this year, and the rest to follow...

interesting, eh?

sparky

that is 7000, not 3000 out by the end of the year....

Why is he doing this? Because he is being forced out of office early because the British citizens are pissed at him and are tossing his ass out. We seem to be unable to accomplish the same.

sparky

watching CNN....Bushler is saying this move by the UK shows how well things are going in Iraq, that the British can leave now.

yeah right.

lukobe

Oh, good, let's follow Tony Blair :)

Seriously, though, don't you think we ought to have a good withdrawal plan? Least we can do since we didn't have much of an INCURSION plan...

As for tossing out Blair,
1) I wonder if they're going to put the Tories (or even the Lib Dems??) in office or just replace him with Gordon Brown, which wouldn't make too much of a difference
2) Nobody seems to have the political will to toss out Bush--do you support that local lawmaker in our state who wants to do so?

sparky

I support anyone who would like to do a total house cleaning of the worst Administration this country has ever seen.

Sure it would be nice to have a plan...but it is not going to happen. Who would come up with a plan? The President has already said he is not going to be stopped in getting his way. This Administration has never had a plan beyond their fantasies of ruling the world. Meanwhile, the British press is reporting that we should pay attention to march 17-18th regarding Iran.

joanie

Of course, Brown would be better. He's not a running bud of the president. Two frat boys in action.

Andrew, I've made lots of arguments . . . where have you been. This war is five years old. Get real. You still havent' made an argument . . . just stupid juvenile rhetoric.

Plans - there have been lots of them. Murtha's, Kerry's, Feingold's . . . but the estupido Republicans had to have their way.

Andrew - I do hate Bush. You don't? Gee, aren't you a humbler forgiver.

And where did I say immediate withdrawal - except that I do think the sooner the better. Andrew, you sound like a right-wing idiot, putting words in my mouth. What's the matter with you?

Oh, let's just there and wonder what to do next . . . now that's good idea, Costello.

Did anyone listen to Leonard Kaplan this morning on Ross?

It was on the BBC website yesterday, Sparky. But it is just a plan . . .

If this country lets that idiot start another war, then we have lost our government.

sparky

yes...it's just hard to tell what is "just a plan" and what they really intend to do..remember that Bush got all snippy when someone asked him if he was planning on invading iraq, and that is where the famous "Im the decider" quote came from. Once again he is denying any intentions of going to war...but i find it almost impossible to believe him.

joanie

he wouldn't know the truth if he fell over it!

he's determined and that's just plain scary

coiler

Blair is on his way out soon, I think the announced "pull-out" is his 'FU GW' t-shirt to Bushler/Cheney. Blair was Bush' lap dog for so long and the Brits gave him hell for that.

Andrew

Joanie, my argument is this: right here: "if the US withdraws now, America and Iraq will both be less safe." That is my argument.

That is my argument.

joanie said "And where did I say immediate withdrawal - except that I do think the sooner the better"

Do you even read what you write? The sooner the better, as in if it were RIGHT NOW that would be SOON ENOUGH, which is the very definition of immediate withdrawal.

joanie

look, dumbass, "sooner the better" wasn't said when you first made your attacks . . . and that isn't the definition of immediately anyway. God, don't you have anybody else to argue with? Is life so lonely? You're a so-called writer, you need a better dictionary.

Try arguing facts . . . a plan . . . something substantial instead of red herrings that do nothing but show your ignorance of the subject.

Andrew

I can't, in good conscience, let you say something like "[I'm not for] immediate withdrawal" and then say "sooner the better" without pointing out that it's silly and contradictory. I also can't just stand by and let you go on thinking that attacking opinions and ideas is somehow wrong. This is realy fundamental stuff, neccessary for free and open debate.

If you don't learn the error of your ways here then, God forbid, you might go to work and casualy annoy your coworkers with circular reasoning an nonsensical debate, live and in person, all day long. I might be telling you what they are unwilling or incapable of telling you.

joanie

You're funny, andrew.

Tommy008

.....thinking of taking the train to Eugene next month to see the latest David Lynch monstrosity, Inland Empire, on the big screen- nearly 3 hours of dark, arcane paranoia and scariness, cool music, a frightening old Polish woman, circus geeks, a monkey, Jeremy Irons, Laura Dern, Harry Dean Stanton, and a family of "bunny people" lounging in a suburban living room... apparently it was here and left a month or so ago...... Shiers called Lynch a "weirdo".. Frank read a pip of an email to him tonight, putting him in his place about his asinine mania over trying to disprove human-caused global warming as a "Democrat Party"/liberal concoction to get us out of our cars... the emailer basically called Frank a peabrain and expressed relief that he was no longer teaching....

Duffman

I would simply say that IMHO any one who puts their money on what 'Scott Ritter says would likely 'drink the Kool-Aid'!

lukobe

andrew: "I feel your pain."

Moose

Duffy simply says:

"I would simply say that IMHO any one who puts their money on what 'Scott Ritter says would likely 'drink the Kool-Aid'!"

Ritter's pre-war statements on Iraq's WMD status were closer to the truth than anything that spewed from the mouths of Bush/Cheney/Wolfowitz/Perle...ad nauseum. Who was drinking Kool-Aid?

joanie

Not only who was drinking, who was serving it?

Duffman, another well-sourced response. Where do you get your expertise anyway?

Oh, sorry, we don't want to go "there." :)

Duffman

If you study his comments in some relative depth, you will see that while he was somewhat accurate in his recall of facts, he was prone to drawing incomplete and 'inaccurate' conclusions. You need not 'classify' me in a political way; as this subject transcends that pejorative approach.

Moose

"he was prone to drawing incomplete and 'inaccurate' conclusions."

Huh? Do you have examples?

I'm not a huge Ritter fan by any means, but history has been kinder to his pre-war positions than they have to Bush and Co.'s.

Ritter was more right than he was wrong...given the Admin's track record....

mercifurious

Duff shares this cud:
If you study his comments in some relative depth, you will see that while he was somewhat accurate in his recall of facts, he was prone to drawing incomplete and 'inaccurate' conclusions

*Pulls up chair, resting chin on index finger/thumb, looks inquisitive

You say you've studied this in relative depth? Do tell Duffman.

In all seriousness, we're very interested in the exact incomplete and 'inaccurate' conclusions that Ritter drew. Please provide these along with the "somewhat accurate" facts.

I'd also be interested in a comparison between Bush Admin. "facts and conclusions" (incomplete, inaccurate, and otherwise), and those of Ritters.

Since you've obviously studied this "in some relative depth", tell us which facts/conclusions are more accurate and complete - Bush's or Ritter's?
(Remember to provide sources for this)

lukobe

Duffman, oh yeah!

Have neither the time or desire to recite chapter and verse...suffice to say it's my opinion - just ignore as you will, get back in line and remember after the first sip to say 'thank you sir, may I have another'!

Moose

"Have neither the time or desire to recite chapter and verse...suffice to say it's my opinion - just ignore as you will, get back in line and remember after the first sip to say 'thank you sir, may I have another'!"

In other words, ya got nothing. Consider yourself ignored.

mercifurious

Have neither the time or desire to recite chapter and verse...suffice to say it's my opinion - just ignore as you will, get back in line and remember after the first sip to say 'thank you sir, may I have another'!

*watches poker chump bluff, then fold his poopy hand.*

Ahhhhhh, I see. No facts, no conclusions. Just an "opinion"?
And so now anyone NOT listening to Duffman's Mount Sinai "opinion" is drinking Koolaid? So sayeth Jim Jones himself.

In other words, you done got owned. Thank you for flying, Buh-bye.

mercifurious

mercifurious

Sorry about the duplicate. Duffman got owned so nice, I posted it twice

joanie

Anybody seen Duffman around? Can't find him . . . must be out lookin' for those facts . . .

Duffman

You're humorous; witty and always an interesting post...I will always be 'lookin' for those facts'...but alas, sometimes what we are fed by the MSM are not necessarily 'facts'..w/you agree..how can we ever be sure...thus formulating 'our opinion' based on 'what's out there'...such as it is; is it ever REALLY locked in stone?

joanie

Duffman (and Andrew) it is out there. Sometimes you have to look hard and sometimes you have to just pick your radio hosts and your tv programs (CSpan) better.

Randi Rhodes - and I don't always like her - has a website that documents everything she poses. Everything. She does the hard work, Duffman.

Also, CSpan has so many people on who are students of government and politics and international affairs - they offer insights you get nowhere else. If you listen to enough of it, you really do get a good idea of what is going on.

You have to listen to people who are there . . . like Tom Ricks who wrote FIASCO.

Today on Dave Ross - and Sparky, Dave has been talking Iraq a lot but with guests from both the right and the left - a called named Kathy called in. She had been a contractor in Basrah. The British are leaving Basrah. Well, the story is that the Shia have killed all the Sunnis and so there is no war there anymore. The British aren't needed.

You don't have to believe me but if you had heard her, she was credible. Fascinating. Iran has Basrah. (not sure about the spelling)

The British are not going to Bagdad!

Also, Denmark is pulling out - see Rhodes website.

joanie

BTW, totally agree with you about mainstream media . . . but that's not news to anybody. Is it?

Tommy008

I'm sorry- Frank sounds like a woman when he talks about his daily jaunts with his little spoiled brat. It's great for him to spend time with her- just not to tell us about it, which of course he does in his self-absorbed,"precious" manner.furthermore his attitude suggests that he just takes it as a given that we are clamoring for the latest details of his fatherhood saga. I could take Turi Ryder telling tonight's latest storytime installment about the child- with Frank it's vaguely repulsive.

lukobe

what do you mean Iran has Basra?

mercifurious

Duffy still playing after failed bluff:
...but alas, sometimes what we are fed by the MSM are not necessarily 'facts'..w/you agree..

Ah yes: The last bastion of any failure - be it bankrupt foreign policy, baseless argument, etc. - blame the media.

Again, I find it amusing that a bunch of tough-talkers would constantly provide such a pathetic loser excuse for their failures.

Duffman

'Thank you sir, may I have another'...too funny!

mercifurious

Duffman still suffering from his BS bluff argument Rigor-mortis

Respond or we wash our hands of you Duff:
"If you study his comments in some relative depth, you will see that while he was somewhat accurate in his recall of facts, he was prone to drawing incomplete and 'inaccurate' conclusions"

Again, seeing as how you have studied in some relative depth, the Bla'm Fam would love to view your information, facts, and conclusions in some relative depth.

We're only asking for what you you claimed you could provide. Shit or get off the pot, fish or cut bait, provide information or incur perminent ignore status.

Duffman

Bring on the 'perminent ignore status'...is that sort of like...Ummm, I don't know 'permanent'? You may possibly have me confused with someone who gives a sh**.

joanie

C'mon Duffman, you're the one who put it out there first. That is the problem when trying to debate/discuss/get anything factual from you guys on the right. Seems like there's no "there" there . . . ever.

mercifurious

Tell you what Joanie. Every time you see a Duff post, just cut-past & post this as an auto-reponse:

Sources required before further respect given:
"If you study (Ritter's) comments in some relative depth, you will see that while he was somewhat accurate in his recall of facts, he was prone to drawing incomplete and 'inaccurate' conclusions"

Sometimes you gotta drag these out-off-the-ass info people kicking and screaming to the truth table. See: Bill O'Reilly and his "Paris Business Review".

Duffman

Let's see; I guess 'perminent'= approx 1Hr 48Min...amazing what can be learned on this educational blog..have a good life...don't sip too fast...

joanie

Your last hurrah, huh Duff? Still no 'there" there . . .

BTW, you all should be listening to Reagan right now. He's discussing eliminating primaries (yeah!) and instituting run-off elections by rank ordering candidates on the Nov ballot. Gore would have won some states and Bush would have won New Mexico where Buchanan siphoned off votes.

Sounds good to me.

mercifurious

I see, Duff. Still no answer for your pulled-out-ass argument, so now you've moved-on to annointing yourself "Captain Spell-check".

Congrats.

Once again:
Sources required before further respect given:
"If you study (Ritter's) comments in some relative depth, you will see that while he was somewhat accurate in his recall of facts, he was prone to drawing incomplete and 'inaccurate' conclusions"

Duffman

Keeping your word required before any further respect given...

please honor your pledge and 'plea' (to the one who 'drives' this blog) to ignore...as to be ignored...
