I love Maureen's writing. Thank god for someone who can nail the stupidity of this administration in a few entertaining words.
Oh, and Sandra, isn't it nice to be in such demand? Perhaps a little envious?
Posted by: joanie | January 20, 2007 at 12:42 PM
maureen dowd never has anything positive to say. she just tears down everybody she disagrees with or who has turned down her sexual advances. she is a ny elite completely out of touch with the real world, like hillary clinton.
Posted by: sandra | January 20, 2007 at 01:08 PM
BTW, Sandra, Maureen comes from a strong Roman Catholic family.
Where'd you get the "jewess" - O'Reilly per chance? Rush? Curious to know who your sources are . . .
Posted by: joanie | January 20, 2007 at 01:15 PM
"a cynical Jewess"- .....from Irishsurnames.com- Dowd- the Irish name Dowd is derived from the native Gaelic O'Duhda Septs that were located in Counties Sligo and Mayo especially. Smaller Septs dispersed to Kerry where they are now known as Doody, and to Derry where they became Duddy. Dodd and O'Dowd are the variants of the name that can be mostly found in the Connaught Counties. from WIKIPEDIA "her father was born in County Clare, Ireland and was a member of the I.R.A."

jews are jews. liberals are liberals. elites are elites. they're all here to tear down this country and give it over to what every Godless flavor of the month wants a piece of it. there won't be any left for God fearing Americans after a while. there are a lot of jews, btw, who are hiding as irish, and other europeans in this country. lots of catholics were found to be communists- where do you think they all went after the cold war was over?
Posted by: sandra | January 20, 2007 at 02:20 PM
Okay . . . now I get it. You're one of those who still mourns for the Third Reich. Gotcha.

Tommie, sometimes facts just get in the way of bigotry and ignorance. What'cha gonna do?
Posted by: joanie | January 20, 2007 at 02:46 PM
wikipedia "Dowd grew up in Washington D.C., where her father was a policeman." Those "elitist" policemen's families get all the breaks, while the rest of us shlubs actually have to work for a living! Tain't fair, McGee!

"Racism..Get Used To It!"
You left out all the brown people in your post..

Jews, liberals, and elites, are here to tear down the country?!
Do some people really believe that, or is the poster attempting to be inflammatory? Very odd post.
I'm Jewish, moderate, and literate, though not elite, so what I am doing, tearing just part of the country down? Which part? Where?
I'm sorry to report, I've failed miserably. The part I thought I was responsible for, is actually improving and prospering.
What a failure. God, I hate myself.

Jews are Jews, you can't change that. Irish are Irish, you can't change that. Germans are Germans, you can't change that. Chinese are Chinese, you can't change that. Danes are Danes, you can't change that.
Your comment about Jews is lost on me.
Since your deeply insightful post, David, was scribed at 2:04am, it's probably safe to assume you made it home from the tavern. Alone. Again. I wonder why that is?
You have to like yourself before others will, my friend. And you sound like a deeply insecure individual suffering from a substantial inferiority complex, who probably never set foot in a college classroom. Just a wild guess.
Well, I'm off to write some Jewish porn, so I'll be even more indentifiable to you.
Hope you get well soon, David.

Dowd is a pathetic human being as it is...no need to bring any kind of ethnicity into it.
She dated everyone from Michael Douglas to Rush...and was unsuccessful at the whole thing.
I don't think women should be judged by that...but she went on to write a book about it and show her bitterness.

Thom: You goldarn right wingers! instead of addressing the substance of the quote- which is Bush's unprecedented, historical incompetence, you attack the messenger's character (about which you know nothing except she's a liberal and writes better than you). If reading and quoting the NYTimes makes me a loser, I'm in pretty good company. The right's newspaper of record, of course, is the Washington Times, owned and propped up financially by cultist Sun Myung Moon. What winners must read that!

From "Operation Yellow Elephant" :
Instead of asking " where are all the protesters? maybe people should be visiting military recruiting stations and asking, "Whither all the war 'supporters'?"
If President Bush won't even try to persuade healthy, under-42 American heterosexuals to volunteer for military service, even if they plan other careers later in life, it is difficult to see how he can achieve Victory in Iraq.
If President Bush won't even try to convince his strongest supporters to encourage their eligible relatives and friends, their circles of influence, to contact military recruiters, there is no need for anyone to protest the war.
Operation Yellow Elephant is a non-partisan grass roots citizens initiative to Support Our President by encouraging his strongest supporters, if qualified (healthy heterosexuals 41 and under), to volunteer for military service.
The Ballad of the Yellow Beret
(to the tune of "The Ballad of the Green Berets")
We are tough, young Republicans
We fight with words (but never guns)
We show support by drinking beer.
But since we’re rich we’ll stay right here.
(chorus)
Chicken wings suit me just fine
They go so well with my yellow spine
I’ll ply my trade while you’re overseas
When you return, your job will speak Chinese

What pisses me off is the lame argument from the left; that we are in another Vietnam. Poor black kids are getting killed, while white middle class kids are sitting at home. What a pack of lies, if anything the only similarity between Vietnam and Iraq is that politicians are using it for their own gain. Mr. President let the military take the gloves off. This is not a criminal matter, it is war. In war people die, on both sides, we didn’t start it, but we should finish it. In the words of an American hero “The object is not to die for your country, but to make the other poor bastard die for his.” This brings up an important fact; they (insurgents, freedom fighters, terrorist) don’t have one single country or flag. But they do have something that ties them together………..Islam. They worship death not life, hard to believe but true. I truly believe that the world was a safer place during the cold war, the Soviets didn’t want to die (being atheist and all) and neither did we. Now we face an enemy that declares war on our values, not the left of right but on all OUR values.
In 2006, the Iranian political leadership seems to have moved beyond the needs of self-defense and is now talking about global power projection. At a recent conference in Berlin, one of the deputies to Iran's foreign minister called upon the world to recognize that Islam comprises 25 percent of humanity and should occupy its rightful place in decision-making in world affairs and in the allocation of the world's resources. Statements like this are not about self-defense.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stated that Islam should roll back 300 years of Western ascendancy. He was speaking in the name of Islam, not in the name of Iran. At the same time, there is talk about the greatness of Iran, with its 6,000-year-old civilization. The Iranians are trying to retrieve the old glory of the empire and at the same time become the leaders of world Islam. The development of long-range missiles is a key element in building up Iran's power to assume such a leadership position. (aljazeera.net Dec2006)
300 years of western ascendancy, I hope you gals don’t mind wearing black, not going the school, being chattel, and oh yeah, give me your clitoris you won’t be needing that

Coiler, this is a different Steve. Both are die-hard conservatives, but Huckleberry Steve doesn't post as much or as rancorously . . .quite.
Steve above is certifiably brain-dead.

Recife, you are welcome to quake in your boots. It is fine with me.
Somehow, I just can't quite worry myself that Islam wants to take over America.
If anything, I'd say America is wanting to take over the oil fields in Iraq and Iran . . . just sayin'
So, pardon me if I continue my normal American life - sans privacy of course.
You are perfectly welcome to worry for both of us . . . if it makes you feel better.

Posted by: Steve | January 22, 2007 at 07:33 PM
I don't know how old you are Recife but your argument holds no water. By and large, the people sacrificing for this war are the less educated and the dis-advantaged. STOP! I know and most folks on this blog know that there are exceptions to this statement. You say the politicians should be able to "take the gloves off". If that worked, we would do it! America was invaded by the worlds only Superpower twice in forty years. Did you pay attention in history class? 1776 and 1812 did not turn out well for Britain. When General George Patten made the quote you repeat he was talking from a morally superior position-we were attacked by a military power-not nineteen fanatics with fucking box-cutters! You say Iran is now exerting "Global power projection" !!! This country is years away from being a nuclear power, what planet are you on? Ahmadinejad is unpopular in his own country. He gained his power because Iran was concerned about American imperial power in the region. Lastly; anybody who is so afraid of the "Islamists" taking over America(the country that has over 200 million guns in the hands of the population) is a fucking brain-dead chicken.
Posted by: Rick | January 22, 2007 at 08:39 PM
Ah, Rick, you're talking facts here . . .
just sayin'
Posted by: joanie | January 22, 2007 at 09:21 PM
Ah, Rick I have know idea how old you are either. I do remember my history, I consider myself well educated, having been raised on Cape Cod, attending the finest liberal schools the east coast can bring forth. I’m old enough to have served in the former West Germany, was there when the wall fell. I watched the trial (all 5 minutes of it) of Nicolae Ceausescu, and his subsequent death by firing squad, live on German TV. I served in Desert Storm, Somalia, and the Balkans. So I think my resume in the regards of been there, done that are in order.
Nineteen fanatics with box cutters, indeed, now let’s go over some history.
October 23 1983, Beirut, Lebanon, death toll was 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and 3 Army soldiers. Sixty Americans were injured. In the attack on the French barracks, 58 paratroopers were killed and 15 injured.
April 5 1986, West Berlin, death toll 2 Army Soldiers.
June 25 1996, Khobar Towers, Saudi Arabia, 19 U.S. servicemen and one Saudi were killed and 372 of many nationalities were wounded.
October 12 2000, USS Cole, 17 Sailors killed.
Well enough of the history lesson, I know it makes little difference to you.
But I will ask you a few questions, when I was sent into the middle of a civil war, with unarmored Humvees, and 1960’s era flack jackets, did you say one thing? Of course not, because that went well with very few casualties. Of which I for one am very grateful, of course if you knew what the rules of engagement where you piss all over yourself. In a nutshell, 9 to 90, man or woman, they look at you the wrong way shoot them. First couple of days was a little noisy, but they got message fast. Didn’t see it on TV? Nah, CNN was nowhere to be found. Do you really care about the American youth who have VOLUNTEERED and are bleeding or is it your hatred of Bush?
When the commanders on the ground in Mogadishu, asked for, no begged for better equipment, did you rise up in self righteous indignation and demand for the troops to come home? No I didn’t think so.
And do me a favor, how about a little research?
Death by Race Iraq War Dec 2006
White 69.2%
Black 14%
Hispanic 11.1%
Other 5.6%
Oh those poor people of color getting slaughtered left and right.
Less educated? Do you have any idea what it takes to get promoted in the US Military?
Get back to me with some facts
Posted by: Recife | January 23, 2007 at 12:16 AM
All of the race/education stuff aside (since it is really not germane to the point) please explain to me again what Iraq had to do with any of those terrorist attacks that you named off Recife? Oh none...got it. Your arguement is pretty much a non sequitu. P.S. bringing up Somalia in all of this is kind of stupid...especially when you consider those leading the charge to get us out of there were not liberals ... it was the Republicans. So I guess your grasp of history is pretty meaningless if you lack the ability to think critically too.
