Listeners call, they write- "Where's Steve Scher?" He's Seattle's top-rated morning talk host on NPR affiliate KUOW and the domo of the weekdaily Weekday. Forget Limbaugh, Dave Ross and Thom Hartmann- even Montel.
And Scher's gone missing from the air.
BlatherWatch has the exclusive story. Scher is suffering from tinnitus and will be away for 7 weeks.
He hasn't been sitting around wringing his hands. He told BlatherWatch: "It sometimes makes work hard. I am seeing if a little down time will quiet the ringing. For the most part, I have to just suck it up, but a little quiet might help."
The condition is rarely fatal and doctors hope he won't have to have surgery. As Sean Hannity would say- Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.
We kid Steve Scher, but we know his listening public expects and appreciates his in-depth interviews with scatologists, entomophagists, and Canadians.
His famous curiosity is infectious. "I wonder where kazoos came from..." he'll say out of nowhere, and a new show topic is born.
While Steve is recuperating, he'll spend a week in Florida on a Scripps Howard Environmental
Fellowship,
studying the efforts to restore south Florida. That's the way guys
like Steve recoup, unlike the rest of us who sit around at home eating
Vicodin when we're sick and watching Ellen Degeneres.
Scher writes: "I get back July 3rd, just before America's Day. GW [Bush] and I will be celebrating. Then I am back at it full time. Just in time for the election. Our High School Intern program starts on the 24th of July. That's a month long hands-on training for high school students. We will try to head out to the crescent precincts to find out how the suburban swing voters might vote in the fall election."
In the interim, one of the originators of Weekday, cultural reporter Marcie Sillman will do the hosting.

Maybe this will help Dave Ross entice his listeners back . . .

Not with Thom Hartmann as an alternative....!! that is..unless you LIKE listening to another segment on Sound Transit!

Yeah, he is missed....love the links from your lavish library of lunacies, Bla'M! LMAO!!

"Dave's lineup-San Bernadino disallowing immigrants from renting apts . . . Bev Harris -black-box voting . . . Citizens suing Verizon."
Posted by: joanie | May 16, 2006 at 09:28 AM
That's not tinnitus - it's the sound of all those ringing pledge drive phones.

LOL, Tabs....
Hey, Bla'M, you have Vicodin? Need money?
Posted by: Fremont | May 16, 2006 at 09:44 AM
I agree, very funny!
Sparky, I think Dave is trying to up his appeal a little - I hope so! I check him everyday because I like local sometimes.
Posted by: joanie | May 16, 2006 at 09:50 AM
I wish Dave well, truly I do. I know a lot of people are happy he is back in his old time slot.
My tastes have changed, I guess.

That was yesterday's line up. One problem I have with them is they don't get the new lineup on line very quick! Today he had Terry Bergeson on. I would liked to have listened but that is core teaching time. I only get to listen to either the first and last half hours of their programs . . . looking forward to retirement!
Posted by: joanie | May 16, 2006 at 11:44 AM
Yes, Joans, that IS yesterday's line-up....Bummer! I was actually going to tune in...(You're too young to retire...)!
Posted by: Fremont | May 16, 2006 at 01:40 PM
If only . . . (LOL!) I'd love to have been one of those Microsoftie millionaires that got to retire young and is out doing all the fun stuff now!
Anybody got a sure thing in the market? I'm in the market . . .

Marcie Sillman is okay, but she doesn't have Steve's gift for making any topic, no matter what it is, sound uninteresting. "This is Weekday; I'm Steve Scher. Coming up on the program today: What does last night's arrival on Earth of the colonizing force from planet Zendar mean for local fisheries? We'll talk to an expert on salmon habitat and find out. And in our second hour, part 835 of our 3700-part series on the WASL."

Brian
"hoser"
Why when I click on the Canadian link am I directed to a Uruguayan tourist website?
Posted by: Liz | May 16, 2006 at 02:38 PM
Liz,
I realize that everyone that works for this website has taken it upon themselves to verbally assault my wife on a daily basis. I have instructed her to stay off the internet because of it. She has made it clear to me that she lacks the mental capacity to do so, and because of that, I say whatever any of you say to her is fair game at this point.
I however, will not tolerate such disrespect. I especially will not tolerate a woman speaking to me, a man, in such a manner. Please be warned that any future slanderous comments such as referring to me as a "hoser" will result in legal action. That is a promise.
Never in my life have I allowed anyone, much less a woman, to muddy my good name. I most certainly will not let a gutter rat feminist, such as yourself, do so. You may consider this a written warning that if you- or any of the rest of you- ever dare to do such a thing again, I will ruin you and everything you hold dear. You will be left more penniless than you were the day you escaped your horrid mother’s wretched loins.
Regards,
Brian

Perhaps Brian's real grievance is with our forbidden liberal love, eh, Al? Maybe he would be happier if we let him in as well... By the way, Al, last night was UN-BE-lievable. I have never seen somebody smoke so much dope, you commie doper. Way to go!

Fremont, if you're around . . . Mariah is no longer brooding and has left her three eyasses out in the cold to die. . . so sad. Too many eggs; none were healthy.
Posted by: joanie | May 16, 2006 at 08:59 PM
Hey, Joans....I checked in today and they were all huddled together...I thought she was just seaching for food...gawd! Let's go rescue them!
Market tip for you from "The Graduate": "Plastics, son, plastics...."
Posted by: Fremont | May 16, 2006 at 10:38 PM
Well, she is back and forth on the brooding I see. . . but all is not well. Don't know what will happen . . .
Re plastics, I missed that fiberglass boat, too!
