ever notice, that kirby, (i call him "kermy" sounds like kermit the frog? "kermit wilbur". he also mumbles his words together like he has pudding in his mouth or is staring at a pin-up of pamela anderson. LOL

Lump

Michael sez "~We'd rather have a colostomy than have to listen to Frank Shiers for another week."
Let me know when you need a new bag and I'll send it on over.

blathering michael

your generosity, Lump is exceeded only by your taste for 19th century authors

JDB

Since the obvious solution for KIRO is to move Dave Ross back to 9-noon, why is that not being discussed? Is Dave tired of getting up early in the morning?

Kiro should go retro with news from 6-9, Dave 9-noon, news noon-1, Dori 1-3, and another local or news from 3-6. It's a schedule that worked for years. Why not go back to it?

J_P_K

I don't think KIRO wants to chance putting Dave opposite of Thom Hartmann! That match-up might prove embarrassing to KIRO!

Andrew

Allen Prell said Ross' morning ratings weren't that great prior to his run for office.

Red

I am so tired of Dori and his show. I want good current event issues discussed from respectable talk show host. KIRO who supports being an energency station scares me now if a true state emergency were to happen I don't trust them! Not listening to the fans was all it took.

Eleanor

I agree with JDB that KIRO should return to its old news format, but the ideal talk schedule would be Dave Ross in the morning and Allan Prell in the afternoon. Dori Monson is an immature, manipulative hypocrite; the sooner he departs KIRO, the happier most listeners will be.

Lump

Eleanor sez " Dori Monson is an immature, manipulative hypocrite; the sooner he departs KIRO, the happier most listeners will be."
Who are most listeners? The left like yourself? Could it be that since most of you have your knickers in a knot over their programming, they are no longer listening to you?

Eleanor

I'm sure KIRO is not listening to me, and I doubt very much that they are listening to you, Lump.

joanie

Just had to comment that I don't know what I'd do re Ross who has always been my favorite along with Jaco if he went back to mornings. I've actually been listening to Air Amer the last three or four days and I'm getting hooked. I like Hartmann! I like Franken! I like Rhodes! Don't care much for Schultz.

I guess, at this point, I wish Ross would go over the Air Amer! I like Franken because he's funny and I love his guests. He talks mostly Bush, of course, whereas I'm getting local stuff with Ross. But, once I'm listening to Franken, I stick around for Randi Rhodes. SHE WAS HILARIOUS TONIGHT! Absolutely had me laughing for twenty minutes solid on her comments about the staging of Bush's little rap with the soldiers yesterday.

I know Ross couldn't go to Air Amer because his appeal has so much to do with his local topics. What to do?

Any help out there? In all this mess, KIRO is losing a longtime listener!

(PS: I will never listen to Shiers ever!)

PeakLimiter

First, KIRO really couldn't care less about AAR or Thom Hartman or whoever. Air America with 60+ affiliates has garnered only 0.1% of the national audience and is having severe growing pains most everywhere. Both in ratings and advertising revenue. KIRO was the giant for years without being overwhelmingly political and being known as the news authority. Many in radio programming circles believe that KIRO's move to the "left" has had a huge negative affect on their ratings. You can not program a regional 50,000 watt radio station targeted at the city audience and expect to win. It is interesting though that recent radio industry psychographic research is certainly proven true on these threads. A large New York-LA based media research group stated about 6 months ago that those who identified themselves as liberal, were not interested in hearing anything on the radio that didn't trumpant their own beliefs whether right or wrong, factual or untrue. This was in stark contrast to those who identified themselves as conservative. This single report after interviewing about 3000 people showed that conservatives were much more "open minded" and intellectually honest than their liberal counterparts. After you read many of the posts here at blatherwatch, the findings of this report seem to be absolutely correct.

J_P_K

Peaklimiter is a typical conservative quoting "studies" and "research" but unable to provide links or citation!
I know bullshit when I read it... BULLSHIT!!

ExDem

Yea, I don't like what Peak Limiter said either. His so called "studies" are absurd. His post also doesn't line up with what I believe, so I'm not going to listen to him anymore.....

sclub

Actually PeakLim overstated Air America ratings. More like a 0.05 combined national rating. Ask Jones.

PeakLimiter

See JPK's remarks for a CRYSTAL CLEAR EXAMPLE of the reports conclusion. Oh and by the way JPK, unlike you, I am not a lib or a right wing lunatic. I work in the radio industry and have for 25 years. Many research findings are not available to the public, just like the daypart, demographic and qualititive findings of Arbitron. On a persoanl note though, JPK, I couldn't care less wheter or not you believe the outcome a respected media consulting firms research project. I'm sure you would listen to Tibetan finger symbol music 24 hours a day so long as they occasionally parroted your delusional opinions.

sparky

Please share your links Peak

joanie

peak . . . and exdem . . . the links please? Words are cheap and easy . . .

PeakLimiter

The report is not just something I came across on the internet, nor is it available to the lay public Sparky. It was comissioned and paid for by a number of top 20 market stations and ownership groups. Like Arbitron, the data are proprietary. Sabo media and KATZ media were the agencies involved in the research aided by a national research firm.

joanie

Ha ha Ha ha hah I'm still laughing! Do you really believe everything you read? And you know that the WMDs are somewhere and that Saddam Husssein was responsible for 9-11. And I'm sure every president needs help talking to troops. I'm sorry to find you so funny!

PeakLimiter

Ladies and Gentlemen, yet another SHINING EXAMPLE of the reports conclusion now supported by Joanie who with her every post here reveals her ignorance, arrogance, delusional thinking and total lack of intellectual honesty. It is no wonder you liked Prell so much!

Lump

joanie sez "Ha ha Ha ha hah I'm still laughing! Do you really believe everything you read? And you know that the WMDs are somewhere and that Saddam Husssein was responsible for 9-11."
What's actually important is that you not believe it. Then, when the attacks come, your hysteria will resonate with the rest of the loonies.

joanie

You guys belong in the loony bin. There is no intellectual in your ramblings to respond intellectually to. Ha haa! Still laughing!

PeakLimiter

I'm sure that Joanie laughs her cackling sounds just like a witch with a bellyache or somebody that clearly has firsthand (or should have) knowledge of the "looney bin" Come here Joanie, it's time for your medication dear.

joanie

cackle, cackle, cackle . . . still laughing.

PeakLimiter

I rest my case. As easily as you are entertained and how divorced from reality you are, it is easy to see why you find Prell or Rhodes interesting. I'll bet you were one of the 10-15 "fans" outside of the Entercom building last week. I'm sure that the only person laughing harder than I was when I drove by, was those inside the building.

sparky

Joanie...its a superduper secret report, like the kind that Rove and Cooper had about Valerie Plame. We mere mortals are not allowed to see it, and shame on us for asking!

While the boys here get their jollies in calling us names, let me just say Im glad you are enjoying Air America...have you listened to Thom Hartmann yet? Rather than grieve the "loss" of KIRO, I think people should move on and find other shows that they like.

joanie

HI Sparky,
Yes, unfortunately because I love Dave Ross, I have moved on to Air Amer. I love Hartmann and he reminds me a bit of Jaco who is my radio hero. His intelligence and ability to articulate issues and his smart responses were awesome.

Did you hear Randi Rhodes last night mocking the "I like you" words from the Iraqi to George Bush during that intellectually stimulating, authentic, genuine and thought-provoking piece of stage craft the other night? I was laughing uncontrollably for twenty minutes at least!

Ed Schultz gets a little old and he's on at the same time as Dori. That is my NPR time!

joanie

To Ex dem, Eric and Lump and Peak,
What do you think of Harriet? i'm curious what you four intellectuals think of her? Educate me, please!

blathering michael

If you got something, give it up, there Peakie. There's proprietary information on this blog all the time--and you're anonymous, here. If that study existed, which I doubt, youda shot it over here faster than George Bush heading for the puddin'. If this study of yours existed, Brian Maloney would have crowed it in his blog...he's not shy about so-called proprietary material especially if it agrees with him. (have to admit--me neither) He's always opined that KIRO's so-called turn to the left is the cause for its downfall. We disagree on that but neither of us has ever had a study proving it either way...that's because none exists. KIRO's problems were caused by specific programming decisions (particularly loss of the Mariners) and their inability to respond quickly enough to the market...just like their right-wing KTTH, who's in the toilet despite all rightie programming including Big Pants. KTTH and KIRO programmers don't show any signs of doing anything meaningful to pull themselves out of the tailspin. If you're really a radio pro, you know that talk radio is all about personalities, not ideologies. AAR is less than a year old, its success or failure will ultimately be decided by who's talking.

sclub

Again--- JONES RADIO NETWORKS has this data--- Office in downtown Seattle. ASK THEM

sparky

Joanie...I call Ed Shultz's show
"Bubba Radio"...he is not the most informed person on the dial. I think KPTK should put Al at noon, Randi back at 3 and if they insist on having Ed's show on the air, then give him that 7-10 slot that gets wiped out by Cougar Football....being the Football Bubba he is, I think he would be honored to be pre-empted by a game.

sara

"I am so tired of Dori and his show. I want good current event issues discussed from respectable talk show host."

AMEN!

Lump

Joanie sez "To Ex dem, Eric and Lump and Peak,

WOW, you must spent a lot of time in the pisser as almost all of his topics are current and a goodly amount of them are local topics. Repectable? That must be someone who talks out of the left side of their mouth.

joanie

Yeah, Lump. She's a hurricane. One of the current topics Dori talked about last week. I'm surprised you don't about hurricane harriet since you listen to that topical and informed radio personality! Oops, sorry! You didn't say informed! My mistake!

Why is it that Lump, Dump. Exflem, Peaky, and Mad Eric never wanna talk about Bush's Harriet who's caused a major rupture IN HIS OWN PARTY, the war that's IN THE SHITTER, Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, and Tom Delay who are IN BIG TROUBLE, his poll numbers down in the BAYOUS OF PUBLIC SEDIMENT, and his public explanations where he looks like a DOG FUCKING A JUG?

ExDem

Blathering Michael,

I had to stop laughing before I could type a reply. Here are some answers for you - short and sweet.

The President gets to make the choice. I don't Miers other than what I read. It seems like there are probably more qualified judges, but she appears capable. He knows her, he trusts her and he chose her. Let the confirmation process begin.

I've read a lot about how the war is going so badly. Oh, and then I read an item yesterday about how the Iraqis are voting on a constitution this weekend. Was this just the continuation of an initiative started by Saddam Hussein? No, that's right, it happened because the USA, with all of it's power, toppled Saddam and freed a major country in the center of the Middle East. Seems like there is genuine progress toward a democratic Iraq in a highly unstable, dangerous part of the world. So, the big picture shows that historic progress is being made.

Rove, Libby and Delay are going through a legal process. I'm willing to wait to see how that turns out. If they are found guilty of some crimes, let them be punished. Just like we were all willing to wait to see how things turned out for Clinton in all his legal proceedings. And when the judge found him guilty of lying under oath, she fined him and took away his law license. Give the current people the same treatment - let the system work.

Bush's poll numbers are down. OK, what would you like us to say. Performance counts. I don't remember what Reagan's numbers were like, or FDR's during their adminstration. What I do know is that I can point to tangible accomplishments their administrations achieved. I'll do the same for this President. Clinton achieved a balanced budget, reformed welfare and got impeached. Those are things we can remember - I have no clue what his poll numbers were like any more.

You, and others the hang around this blog, don't like the President. Deal with it. The majority of American voters put him in office. You are in the minority and the great thing about this country is that you're allowed to have your opinion. It's a minority opinion, so you get to sit on the sidelines while the other side gets to lead and legislate.

PeakLimiter

Michael,
As with a number of radio pro's in this city, we enjoy reading your blog. We find it entertaining and you're a good writer. However, while you do indeed have experience writing, you have ZERO experience in commercial radio and there are many times where you make it crystal clear that you couldn't program a police scanner during a crime wave. There are many demographic, psychographic and focus group results that you couldn't possibly imagine. They are highly proprietary and unlike possibly Maloney, I do not violate standards or confidentality agreements within the industry that has employed me for over 25 years. Whether or not you believe me, is irrelevent to me. I really could not care less what you or any other of your "regulars" believe.
As for your above post, there are just 2 things to think about. Despite this administrations problems and poll numbers that are still not as low as Clinton's were, the left still has not offered a single idea, plan or definitive methodology for the problems facing this country. The second fact is that even with the numerous problems, it hasn't translated into support of so-called progressive ideals.
On a personal note Michael, the above post makes it clear that you are so "open minded" that your brain has fallen out.
Cheers!

Scrilla

Hmmm. Interesting new burden of proof you're instituting here Michael.
"If this study of yours existed, Brian Maloney would have crowed it in his blog...he's not shy about so-called proprietary material especially if it agrees with him."

So, you can slime people with innuendo and DEMONSTRABLY FALSE accusations ( there's a legal term for that), but others have to cite if it challenges your own assumptions? And Maloney does NOT have access to market research. Walt Sabo does considerable research in SeaTac metro and they don't even provide hard copies to the client!
But, to the body of what PeakLim says: talk to a national sales rep at KIRO, KOMO or Infinity and they'll tell you AA isn't driving listeners to sponsors. That is a near immediate measurement of audience power.
If you're so well connected, get on it. Meanwhile, I shall reread some of your posts and view them with a new lens.

sclub

Is there more than 1 PeakLimiter? That last one doesn't sound like him.

Lump

Joanie sez "Yeah, Lump. She's a hurricane. One of the current topics Dori talked about last week. I'm surprised you don't about hurricane harriet since you listen to that topical and informed radio personality! Oops, sorry! You didn't say informed! My mistake!
So, what do you think of hurricane harriet? Hmmmm?"
I guess unlike yourself, I still have to make a living to support all of my bad habits and can't sit on my ass all day like, like yourself, listening to talk radio. I listen to Dori 3-4 times a week for bout an hour and if the topic doesn't interest me, I turn it off. As for Hurricane Harriet, I would consider her a class 4 as she has both the loonies on the far left and the nutcases on the far right in a hysterical froth. I have no opinion on her, other than she will be confirmed and I hope she interpets the law as it is written and not rewrite it under a new world order.

Lump

Michael sez "Why is it that Lump, Dump. Exflem, Peaky, and Mad Eric never wanna talk about Bush's Harriet who's caused a major rupture IN HIS OWN PARTY, the war that's IN THE SHITTER, Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, and Tom Delay who are IN BIG TROUBLE, his poll numbers down in the BAYOUS OF PUBLIC SEDIMENT, and his public explanations where he looks like a DOG FUCKING A JUG?"
Michael, just the tone of your post shows me that your underwear is too tight. You seem to be bordering on extreme hysteria. I just posted a comment about Hurricane Harriet so that is mute. I am disturbed about your take on Iraq and must conclude you are rooting for a defeat of the USA in the war on terror and that is sad because then I no longer have any respect for you or your ideas. As for Rove, Libby, or DeLay, if they are guilty of a crime, then they should be prosecuted and dealt with under the justice system. If however, the prosecution is political, then the reverse is also true and also should prosecuted. As for your assessment of Bush and his poll numbers, don't get too excited about them. If one asked me the question of "Do I Approve of the Job Bush Is Doing" I would check the NO box. I am extremely upset with the excessive spending, porous borders, and lack of balls to vetoe legislation. Lots of Republicans, not just the far right, don't approve of his job. However, that said, the reality is that the Democrats are not able to capitalize as the public likes them even less than Bush. Both Clinton and Bush 41 had lower numbers than Bush does now, so that number flows with the tide. And your last sentence, WOW, you really did forget to take your meds. I'll bet you looked like you had rabies after you got that off your chest. End result is, there will be no Democrat elected to the White House in 2008, and all of you will commit mass suicide off the Space Needle after AAR folds and the dems stay in the minority.

sparky

Was there an answer in there, somewhere?
Like I said, the " truth " is so superduper secret, we are not allowed to see in to the Inner Sanctum, Michael. I hope you feel appropriately chastised..I know I do.

blathering michael

This I know:
--the American people's confidence in Bush is in the mid-30 percentiles, barely in the governing range.
--there is no measure of this war that shows success in any of the goals set by the administration. Elections, while good, have not ever made any difference in the intensity of the insurgence, which is already a civil war which will only intensify when Bush can manage to declare victory and skulk away. Losing this face in the Middle East is disasterous. This prolonged unwinnable war has helped the jihadists immeasurably as a training, recruiting and politicizing tool--even better than Russia in Afghanistan. Odds are the Shiites will set up a theocracy and Iraq will be Iran West.
--Bush is so wounded politically, he needed someone for SCOTUS who was safe. In an uncharacteristic political misstep,(Where was Karl?) he thought Miers was safe (Harry Reid almost endorsed her the 1st day). He forgot his party is controlled by a Southern religious conservative base, who, in return for electing him, had been promised Rev. Jabba the Hut, but when they got they got this middling crony nobody'd ever heard of, they freaked out, and are now voicing the concerns and anger they've had all along about Bush's spending, immigration, and all the other conservative principles he's violated. A poll I saw recently of conservatives revealed that some 50% of them consider him a moderate. I must refer you to my recent allies Ann Coulter, Bill Kristol, and George Will.
--ExDem: you can compare Bush to Reagan and FDR with a straight face?
--Wrong about Clinton's numbers: he had 60% during the hoked-up impeachment.
--Things are in disarray and the people are unhappy about it. You guys can go on about Clinton all you want...he's been out of office for 5 long years. Your guy is in with a majority Congress. Where is that accountability you're always trying to hold politicans to?
~Bush has done nothing successful domestically. His Social Security privatization plan was DOA, even though he stumped it all over the country for months (he had little or no political capital, even after his squeaky-tight election and before all the recent failures); his No Child Left Behind, is a costly boondoggle conservatives are horrified by (he passed it with the help of uberlib Ted Kennedy).
--hi tax cuts, which he insists on pushing despite the war, benefit only a tiny percent of the very wealthy. Meanwhile the gap between living wages and the cost of living widens like your ass, Scriller.
--DEMONSTRABLY FALSE accusations Scriller? show me some (the satirical stuff doesn't count.)
--Lump: don't tell me you don't sit on your ass all day listening to talk radio--it's well known around the blogoshere: you're a welfare queen--you should be thanking liberals.
PS: I love you guys, and the length and breadth of the discussion in here. Joanie, Sparky, Sara, et al, hang in there. Help is on the way...
