Michael sez " Supporters don't want to talk about intersections and concrete--they want to talk about sending a message. Ross takes the issue to the core--intersections, HOV lanes, the tax policies that create them; and still makes compelling radio. The I-912 people count on short attention spans, and the tempting elixir of anger and revenge to bollox the road repairs bill. Fear & loathing makes for more enticing politics (and radio) than the nuts & bolts of issues, but there's evidence that voters are starting to look deeper. Check Ross's website for listeners' specific questions he directs to the Department of Transportation."
Ah, Michael. It must be tough to get up in the morning and know that's as good as it going to be all day. You still don't get it.
The state takes in zillions of dollars right now in taxes and you make it sound as if they didn't have a penny and need the new tax to survive. By going to the link on KIRO, you make our point again. The state says they are going to undertake a four year study about using HOT lanes on SR167 BEGINNING in 2008. Doing the simple math that means the state will conclude their test in 2012. WOW, that will certainly speed up traffic in a lane that ends in traffic gridlock on a daily basis. Why not extend the lane from Auburn thru Puyallup where it becomes SR 512 all the way to I-5? And why not add a general purpose lane each way at the same time? If it's needed now, then it well certainly be needed in 2012 when the state determines the same conclusion. Then I will vote for higer taxes to relieve traffic. We already have the money to fix intersections and they can't get fixed. Just fix the damned traffic mess and quit wasting time and money on stupid testing.

Scrilla

Yeah, well.... Savage did a stint as a fill in on KIRO and the Buzz in 1999/2000. He was pretty good when supported by a good producer. But he had an annoying capacity for interoffice gossip that a part timer should resist (like Erin Hart). He regularly filled in for Kennedy. This one time...at band camp...Savage was on The Buzz at the same time as Brian Maloney on KIRO. The sexual tension was unbearable.

sparky

HAH! Now that last line is FUNNY!! Good, one, Scrilla!!!

Sclub

Scrilla, think you meant Medved on KVI?

Andrew

The anti road repair initiative is financialy reckless and self destructive but what else is a voter supposed to do? When they interview the DOT officials they seem to be totaly out of touch. Maybe it costs millions of dollars self ruin to send a vote of no confidence.

I just looked at the DOT website, they immediately list the projects they are working on and note that the initiative would halt funding, but most of the projects seem to be trivial, silly, maintanance related or safety related to a lesser extent. Few, if any, address making commute times shorter for businesses and the general population, and of the listed projects it's hard to fathom how they could cost so much money. I don't know what they are doing with all that money but it doesn't add up.

Frank Shiers' #1 fan EVAH EVAH

Haaaa..Dan Savage's old KCMU show ROCKED. We called one night and asked him for a proper definition of "smegma". He was not impressed. His books are great.

blathering michael

Smegma ROCKS! do you really love Frank Shiers or are you just saying that for BTW's sake? You know how we feel about him...

Eric Johnson

Well Andrew, the reason the money doesn't add up with DOT is because we have a bunch of illiberal educated fools in government who couldn't pass economics 101. Liberalism has infested our university and societal system so badly that we cannot any longer reason with fools who think that marriage includes Adam and Steve as well as Billie and Bobbie. We are labled by the "tolerant" people as insensitive to queers Etc. if we speak openly and honestly.

Lump

Michael sez "Smegma ROCKS! do you really love Frank Shiers or are you just saying that for BTW's sake? You know how we feel about him..." Gosh Michael, we know how you feel about anybody who isn't a limp wristed, loony card carrying ACLU liberal. Too bad, some of us are actually nice folks.

tim

So talking about 912 is dangerous. You know I do like Ross but never listen to him on his new time slot but calling him the only voice give me a break.

David Williams

It drives me crazy when conservatives accuse liberals of being intolerant. Hello....You are the ones whose economic policies keep minorities down, who cynically use gay marriage and immigration reform as wedge issues to appeal to the basest instincts of the voters. And don't forget the real reason the south became Republican. Hint, it was not tax reform.

We are not obligated to be tolerant towards bigots.

chris

It's ok, David, they argue amongst themselves about 'how bad liberals are' but cannot name a bad one in person. Addicted gamblers like Bill Bennett are their 'heros'.

Hey Eric Johnson, how 'sensitive' are you to queer folk like gay gop'ers Jeff Gannon and Andrew Sullivan? Gays have 'infested' the White House press corps too lol

blathering michael

Where's all this gay-baitin' coming from all of a sudden? Eric Johnson: doan know how you did it, but you connected your rather suspicious gay-hating to the anti-roads initiative 912! quite a feat but maybe not so accidental--Maybe you're the Adam of Adam & Steve, and you don't even know it yet. that closet's awful lonely, dude: come out, come out!
And by the way: that's Adam & STEPHAN...you'll get used to it.

merychippus

"We are not obligated to be tolerant towards bigots."

Actually, David, we are. I don't mean that we should let them run roughshod over people's rights, but I do mean that we have the obligation to be tolerant of their right to hold their opinions. That's why the ACLU has defended the rights of the Nazis to march, and that is why people who say "I disagree with what you say but will defend your right to say it" have the right idea. If you think it's OK to be selectively tolerant you may be better than the bigots, but not by much.

It's because of people like you I won't call myself a Democrat or liberal anymore, though I still almost always vote that way.

The Ruminant Horse.

chris

It's those bigots that do "run roughshod" over peoples rights, eventually. Of course you defend them , you agree with that point of view because you cannot even take a stand politically on this board. But those same bigots wish to stiffle any viewpoint that counters theirs. People who claim they were once a democrat or liberal could never define one then or now...The dead giveaway is the closer, "thats why I'm not one anymore"

Andrew

Conservative America haters alike: Disallowing gay marriage is intolerant by definition, to the letter. When you justify aposing gay mariage you're just justifying your intolerance. You say, in so many words, 'we've never tolerated gay marriage in American history, why start now?' Make no mistake, you hatemongers are intolerant.

sparky

I am still wondering why liberals are the ones required to be tolerant but the right wingers are not?

chris

They hate everything that helped the greatest generation ever, our parents. They got out of the malaise that was the great depression. My favorite line I heard is from Studs Terkel, who at 93 is still kicking ass..

"When Tom Joad says to Ma Joad, remember at the end of Grapes of Wrath? And they’re bullied by the vigilantes and the big growers and the Legionnaires, they come to a government camp, and it says Farm Security Administration, a subsidiary of the Department of Agriculture. And the director of that camp, who is made up to look like FDR, by the way, wears pince-nez glasses. I remember the small things. The actor's name was Grant Mitchell. Isn't that funny? I remember the little things. He says, “This camp is yours.” To the Joad family and to others, to the emigres. “This camp is yours, your decision to be made. You do it, we'll help you find jobs.” So that was the government that is being dismantled, every aspect of the New Deal."

blathering michael

Thanks Chris: that's one of my favorite lectures--about how the WWII generation (my parents too) ushered in the greatest years liberalism ever had. School integration (conservatives were against that) Medicare (conservatives opposed that) The Great Society (conservatives opposed that). They bounced school prayer, (conservatives were for that) fixed Europe and Japan after the war, Conservatives were opposed) they started the Peace corps, got on the moon, waged and won the Cold War--no wonder the world used to love us. Nowadays you hear felonious punks like Ollie North tryna take the "greatest generation," as their own. But Republicans and conservative did everything they could to knock down the reforms of FDR, Truman, Kennedy, even Eisenhower and Nixon, who were Republicans very progressive in foreign affairs, racial matters and the environment. Our parents were socialistic, and dedicated to solutions by a freely democratic government. What a pile of shit is this free market poverty that conservatives have sold us. It's 2 chickens in every garage...

Lifestyle Talk - The Downfall of KIRO?

Talking about HOV lanes, the cost of movies, pets, ADD, sports, and jumping out of planes with parachutes doesn't sell when KIRO is going against three all political talk stations - KPTK, KTTH, KVI.

That's the real problem with KIRO - especially with Prell whose show was almost entirely non-political talk for 9 months. This is also true (to a lesser extent) with Monson.

10a-3p should be solid political talk. Save the lifestyle issues for evenings and weekends. But KIRO seems to have it backwards, with the political stuff overnights with Webb and weekends with Carl Jeffers, Erin Hart, and Bob Brinker.

Steinbeck's Socialist Utopian Fresno aside...explain how, ferinstance, The Great Society reduced poverty?
The difference between the WPA, et al, and Current Liberal Concepts is that one is temporary assistance, the other is a way of life.
Yes...Clinton pushed for Welfare to Work, but only because Gingrich blackmailed him. It is the single greatest lifter of the poor in America since Defense Plants hired for graveyard shifts in WW2. Thanks Newt.
But besides FDR's Treasury Secretary (Morgenthau the guilt ridden Jew)lobbying for de facto enslavement of all Germans...I'm curious which "Conservatives" opposed the Marshall Plan. And how much influence did they have?
I ask because I'm afraid I'm reading some revisionist "Mussolini made the trains run on time" history.

Bob in Auburn

Frank Shires is really kissing ass for this time slot

Cyn

Boy, is he ever, Bob. It is sickeningly sweet. Gag. Frank is as boring as the music lead-ins they designed for his fill-in time. I can't see this lasting - I just can't stand this stuff. He is only marginally better than the guy who was struggling mightily earlier this week in this time slot.

Chris wrote: "Of course you defend them, you agree with that point of view because you cannot even take a stand politically on this board."

Chris: Of course I don't agree with that point of view. I am a left-leaning libertarian--basically a social liberal and an economic moderate. If I agreed with the far right, I'd vote for the far right, and I'd call myself a Republican. I voted for Jim McDermott, Patty Murray, Al Gore, John Kerry...honestly, what more do you want?

"But those same bigots wish to stiffle any viewpoint that counters theirs."

Right. It's no good coming from them and it's no good coming from you.

"People who claim they were once a democrat or liberal could never define one then or now...The dead giveaway is the closer, 'thats why I'm not one anymore'."

I have no idea what you're trying to imply here, but I should point out that because I disagree with you you've automatically assumed I'm a right-wing conservative, which is laughable.

I am for gay marriage, I am pro-choice, I think the Bush administration are a bunch of idiots, I am for legalization of drugs--I really don't know what more you want.

chris

Well, what I wanted was some honesty, instead we're supposed to feel all so guilty..
"It's because of people like you I won't call myself a Democrat or liberal anymore, though I still almost always vote that way."

merychippus

Chris, I'm not trying to make you feel guilty--I'm just saying that the intolerance some people on the left display DOESN'T help their cause at all. Polarization is NOT what we need in this country right now. People on the left should present themselves as reasonable and not take a page out of the right-wingers' book.

sparky

Again, I ask..why is it up to the left to be NICE, polite, tolerant, self-effacing, quiet-voiced, reasonable, fair, moderate, civil, gracious and refined? I concur that those are all marvelous qualities to have in a person. But if you think we are setting some sort of example, or are causing some on the right to think, " Gosh, I should be more like those fair-minded and even-handed liberals!", well honey, you need to get out more.
Part of the Democrats' problem is our congress critters who take the high road instead of fighting back. When Clinton won his second term, was there a single conservative voice out there that said " I think we better be more like the liberals so we will win next time!?
Nope.
My country is at stake here. I will fight back whenever I need to.

merychippus

"Again, I ask..why is it up to the left to be NICE, polite, tolerant, self-effacing, quiet-voiced, reasonable, fair, moderate, civil, gracious and refined?"

Somebody's got to do it :)
Seriously, though, if you aren't the ones to be tolerant, reasonable, fair, and civil, who will?

I'm sick of choosing the less nasty of two nasties.

chris

Uh no, it is perfectly resonable to fight back. When Cheney told Leahy to 'go fuck yourself', that wasn't a time to be 'tolerant'. It seems to me Merry that it is always easier for one side to win with no opposistion or responsibilty if one was always 'nice', as you say. I'm not sure what examples you have of the left being nasty when it wasn't warranted.

We don't live in 1960's era tv land where the assholes always got their comuppence at the end of 30 mins. and you shouldn't pretend to live that way now.

merychippus

good luck Chris. I earnestly hope you're correct and this is going to result in a better country for all of us. but I have my doubts. guess we'll see!

merychippus

by the way--I didn't say anything about being nice--just reasonable, fair, and tolerant.

SO why the HELL is Dori Monson's GIANT picture on the KIRO homepage??? Is this management giving us the finger????????

marmar

I despise Dori Monson. His show has gone in the crapper....blah, blah blah sound transit blah blah blah monorail blah blah blah. What a snore.

Anyone seen his Stupid Prices comercial on cable? He'll do freakin' anything for a buck. Next he'll be shilling cat food...oops, forgot, he already is.

sara

**He'll do freakin' anything for a buck.**

No shit.

The house that endorsements built.

jeast

Blathering Michael, yes, even though the Viet Nam situtation dragged down the likes of President Johnson, dont forget, he should be mentioned along the likes of Eisenhower, Nixon, FDR, and Kennedy who preached the Great Society Enactment and the New Civil Rights Bill and it was left to President Johnson to enact this program after Kennedy's death. That program encouraged and passed the Medicare Program, improved education, beautification, voter's rights, (especially for blacks), conservation, supporting crime prevention, exploration of space...and yes landing the moon.I could say more but...I've blathered enough.Oh by the way it takes way more muscles to frown than it does to smile........:O)

PS Wilbur and Carlson have radio shows where they commute during off peak hours.....no wonder they are against the gas tax, for they travel in no mans land... during the wee morning hours and the noon hour....work a normal 8-5PM,
9-6PM Revenge may be short lived, especially when the public hears that they, Wilbur and Carlson initiated this tax revolt because they like spoiled NeoCons, couldnt and didnt get their way. I bet they, Wilbur and Carlson would of not supported the Boston Tea Party for that was a real tax revolt............:)

Andrew

Ya I saw Dori's commercial also, it was on just past two in the morning. He apears heavier set in the commercial than the picture on the website suggests.

I can't believe he put his own likeness into a television commercial for one of those clearance grocery stores that moves food that didn't sell before the best-if-used-by date and old, flat soda that tastes like oxidized aluminum and other merchandise nobody bought from wherever it was before. Am I supposed to believe Mr. 6 Figure buys that crap for his loved ones? What a whore.

jeast

Please KIRO, the guy, cant remember his name.... who yapped on Monday and Tuesday.......please have him loosen his BVD waistband, his voice was sooooooo annoying and the religion talk at 9 AM on Monday was way to much to for me to handle...........Thom Hartmann has my attention from 9-12pm. He really knows his Civic and History infomation........I wish he was my Civics teacher back in 1974....George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams are rolling and flipping in their graves with all this religion crap being crammed down Americans throats...i.e. Supreme Court nominations...........

jeast

Andrew, I bet Dori was a cheap date..... can anyone ever want to date him? Its stupid prices for the right date or maybe the right date for a stupid price.....a date should have far right views that land them so far that they fall of the planet.........

sparky

So why the HELL is Dori's Giant Head on the KIRO website????

marmar

I wish the hell Dori would move over to KVI, already.

Dori used to be reasonably fair and moderate; and had some really fun shows on occasion.

Now he's a loud, strident right-winger, and talks over anyone how has differing opinions.

And as for the light, fun shows....yeah him jumping out of an airplane is REAL interesting. ZZZzzzzzzzz

You's think Kiro would get tired of paying for his personal "adventures".

Geez Michael, I go away for a few days and come back to read this drivel and I think you've been in the cooking sherry. Your revisionist history disappoints me as I thought you were pretty knowledgable. Liberals were responsible for school integration? I'll bet that was news to the govenors of Alabama, Georgia, Alabama, and Loosieanna who were all democrats and resisted integration until Eisenhower sent in the troops. Democrats were against integration and equal rights for blacks and it took the Republicans to get the legislation passed. Republicans did resist Medicare and what a cash cow that has become, but then Bush upped tha ante so I guess that makes conservatives more generous than liberals, right? The Great Society farce of Lyndon Johnson? 40 trillion dollars later and what has it accomplished? The dems still have the blacks bullshited into voting for them year after year and what do they get? More bullshit and kept in slavery to the almighty buck. Yuck! The greatest generation went to war in foreign lands to protect the world against anacharchy. Liberals today just pack up and run away from confrontation and even to manage to imitate the French in waving the white flag of surrender. Yeah, I'd sure sleep better at night knowing the dems are in charge of me and my families safety. Liberals didn't fix Europe and Japan after the war, all the people did although a great many who did without during the war years did not wish to put any more money into that endeavor. The greatest generation did not bounce school prayer, their goofy offspring did. The greatest generation was church going and very religious. Today over 80% of the people consider themselves religious to some extent and that drives you lefties nuts. To me that means you in the minority make a lot of noise for such a small group in a country that was founded by individuals who settled here to escape religious prosicution. The Peace Corps? There is another crap hole where money is poured down the drain so people can feel better about themselves. Landing man on the moon? Brought to you by a president who today would be thought of today as a conservative in his political thinking. Bush proposes going back to the moon and the loonies started their howling. And probably the greatest generation would have taken that nutcase Jim McDermitt and hung him for treason for going to Bagdad and meeting with Hussein. The loonies put out feel good programs and throw money in the hole after it and then go home and sleep and dream how they have saved mankind. You guys are nothing like the greatest generation.

Actually, Bushie wanted to go to Mars, not the moon. Personally, I have no problem with him going there if it's that important.

chris

What was it that gave you such a stiffy? The part about Mom and apple pie and their generations success being dismantled by such-a-bum of a president, or the fact that their grandchildern will not have the ability to control their rage at being stiffed in the 'free market' economy?

Lump, my friend. If you count the southern 'dixiecrats' as the whole of the democratic party for dissing integration, it had nothing to do with mainstream politics. I would have thought that you would have researched the reason the dixiecrats came into being was well before all this. It was also democrats like Kennedy and Johnson who also sent in troops and US Marshall to kick some rednecks around and spank them on the ass, although they should of used a paddle instead of their hands, because they had stinky butts. Anyway, the reason the blacks as you put it , who are humans and americans, by now vote that way because whitey, like Bush, won't meet with their national organizational party, that would be the NAACP, for the 4th year in a row. Perhaps that is why Babs Bush was astonished that so many of them had moved in her own private Texass and had to clutch her pearls and gasp on TV as to why, why? they were here.

Now the anti-french line which interests me

"Liberals today just pack up and run away from confrontation and even to manage to imitate the French in waving the white flag of surrender."

Excuse me but what ass did you pull that out of? The French lost 1 million people during WW1 and another 100,000 during WW2 when their country was occupied by the tutonic nazis. They also managed to give us a Statue of Liberty, but since the Patriot Act and Guantánamo we might as well give that back since we don't seem to belive in that any more

"And probably the greatest generation would have taken that nutcase Jim McDermitt and hung him for treason for going to Bagdad and meeting with Hussein."

Hmmm. seems you suggest threatening a member of the US Congress, I guess I'll have to use Bushlers Patriot act and report you now

umo

blathering michael

Once again: that's in the 12+ demo, Umo...even you must know that's totally meaningless businesswise...let's watch for the "money demo" on the 20th of Oct.

ExDem

All of this back and forth about liberal accomplishments through history has piqued my interest. I've got a simple question, and I hope lots of people contribute.

In my lifetime (starting with the Kennedy administration until the present), what would people list as the most significant accomplishments by liberals in government?

So, let's confine it to the most recent 40 odd years and let's also limit it to accomplishments, not causes. For instance, maybe someone would cite the creation of Medicare - that's an accomplishment, the government actually funded it and created an organization to deliver the benefits. However, if someone cited "universal health care" - that's just a cause, the government has not actually approved it or created anything to mandate it (in other words, there's nothing tangible to point at or measure).

So again, starting with the Kennedy administration and going forward, what are the most significant liberal accomplishments by government?

Brandi

I can't believe parents would let someone with as mean a mouth as Dori's coach their children. I wouldn't let him within 10 miles of mine.
