But I thought 9-11-01 changed everything...

I guess 8-28-05 changed everything back.

Shame on you. This is no time for politics. You liberals are making this into a political circus. YOU LIE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!! You are laughing when people have died, just for your hatred of George Bush!! You will pay for this--your few politicians left will BECRUSHED IN THE NEXT ELECTION. YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE. Listen to Sean Hannity for the real truth about the disaster and President Bush.

Michael B.

What a shame, with scandals like these there is no way Bush will be able to run for re-election. :)

N. Emerson

As the full horror of Hurricane Katrina sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if this is the end of George Bush's presidency. The answer is almost certainly yes, provided that every copy of the US Constitution was destroyed in the storm. Otherwise President Bush will remain in office until noon on January 20th, 2009, as required by the 20th Amendment, after which he is barred from seeking a third term anyway under the 22nd Amendment.

As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if the entire political agenda of George Bush's second term will not still be damaged in some terribly satisfying way.

The answer is almost certainly yes, provided that the entire political agenda of George Bush's second term consists of repealing the 22nd Amendment. Otherwise, with a clear Republican majority in both Houses of Congress, he can carry on doing pretty much whatever he likes.

As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if the Republican Party itself will now suffer a setback at the congressional mid-term elections next November.

The answer is almost certainly yes, provided that people outside the disaster zone punish their local representatives for events elsewhere a year previously, both beyond their control and outside their remit, while people inside the disaster zone reward their local representatives for an ongoing calamity they were supposed to prevent. Otherwise, the Democratic Party will suffer a setback at the next congressional election.

As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if an official inquiry will shift the blame for poor planning and inadequate flood defences on to the White House. The answer is almost certainly yes, provided nobody admits that emergency planning is largely the responsibility of city and state agencies, and nobody notices that the main levee which broke was the only levee recently modernised with federal funds. Otherwise, an official inquiry will pin most of the blame on the notoriously corrupt and incompetent local governments of New Orleans and Louisiana.

As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if George Bush contributed to the death toll by sending so many national guard units to Iraq.

The answer is almost certainly yes, provided nobody recalls that those same columnists have spent the past two years blaming George Bush for another death toll by not sending enough national guard units to Iraq. Otherwise, people might wonder why they have never previously read a single article advocating large-scale military redeployment during the Caribbean hurricane season.

As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnist are asking how a civilised city can descend into anarchy.

The answer is that only a civilised city can descend into anarchy.

As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if George Bush should be held responsible for the terrible poverty in the southern states revealed by the flooding.

The answer is almost certainly yes, provided nobody holds Bill Clinton responsible for making Mississippi the poorest state in the union throughout his entire term as president, or for making Arkansas the second-poorest state in the union throughout his entire term as governor. Otherwise, people might suspect that it is a bit more complicated than that.

As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if George Bush should not be concerned by accusations of racism against the federal government.

The answer is almost certainly yes, provided nobody remembers that Jesse Jackson once called New York "Hymietown" and everybody thinks Condoleezza Rice went shopping for shoes when the hurricane struck because she cannot stand black people.

Otherwise sensible Americans of all races will be more concerned by trite, cynical and dangerous political opportunism.

As the full horror of that sinks in, i'm simply glad that everybody cares.

darren is absolutely right -- how DARE anyone express anything but the utmost reverence while people are suffering and dying! Unless you want to play gee-tar, or shoe shop, or stay comfortably on vacation until aroused by the scent of fresh cleanup contracts a week after the disaster. Then it's perfectly OK to party and fart around.

that must be quite tasty Kool-aid..some people just cant get enough of it..

and eating cake! Don't forget the birthday cake!

Or sittin' and Chattin' with Trent Lott about his new house...

If we don't call people to account, they'll never change.

Michael sez "Remember, that Bill Clinton being impeached (how even more frivolous that seems now) ran approval ratings in the 60th percentile.
Absolutely true and poor old George can't catch a break. Bush partied his way thru college and only came away with a BA and MA in business. Clinton partied his way thru school and threw away a Rhodes scholarship. Score Bush 0, Clinton 1. Bush used family influence to escape Viet Nam and enter the national guard and fly fighter planes. Clinton tore up his draft notice, fled to Russia and called his senator to get him out of any kind of service. Score Bush 0, Clinton 2. Bush enters private business and suffers failures and success. Clinton enters government service and goes on the public dole. Score Bush 0, Clinton 3. Bush marries a school teacher and librarian and Clinton marries the world's smartest woman. Score Bush 0, Clinton 4. Bush, while president builds an eco friendly home for retirement and it becomes the summer white house. Clinton, while president has never owned any property, always lived on the public payroll and sucks up to his rich cronies so he can borrow their homes for his summer vacations. Score Bush 0, Clinton 5. Bush suffers 9/11 and attacks America's enemies. Clinton runs and hides from making tough choices and blows up an office building in Bagdad on a saturday night, possibly killing a janitor. Score Bush 0, Clinton 6. Bush passes legislation favoring his agenda, angering the Dems. Clinton passes legislation favoring the Republicans and angers the Dems. Score Bush 0, Clinton 7. Bush's justice department prosecutes white collar crime jailing big muckie mucks from companies like MCI, Enron, yes that Enron, who defrauded investors and the public out of hundreds of millions of dollars. Clinton's justice department during the 8 years of Janel Reno riding around in her red pickup truck prosecutes big scandals like McDonalds. Score Bush 0, Clinton 8. Bush goes on television and stutters ans stammers thru his speeches. Clinton smoothly goes on tv, smiles and lies to the public about his sexual involvement with a subordinate. Score Bush 0 Clinton 9. Poor old Bush remains faithful to his wife over the years as a dull husband. Clinton, always the charasmatic man about town continues to screw anything with tits and his wife remains silent or defends him as being attacked by his political foes. Score Bush 0, Clinton 10. Bush continually suffers from not having a law degree and Clinton loses his license to practice law for perjury. Score Bush 0, Clinton 11. Bush suffers a public relation disaster about his response to a disasterous hurricane in Loosieanna. Clinton gets a pass for his response to a hurricane in South Carolina where it takes FEMA a month get in gear. Score Bush 0, Clinton 12.
No wonder Bill Clinton had a public approval rating of 60%. To this day America's most popular used car salesman enjoys the adulation of people all over the world. What would be do without Bill? We would all perish.

blathering michael

Lump, can't you address the fact that Bush has not succeeded in a single thing except barely getting re-elected?
He got us into a war on false pretenses and prosecuted it so badly we've already lost. We'll be leaving there soon, because even Republicans in Congress are pissed off because we don't have the 100 billion to fix up Louisiana (and that's not even counting the mention tax cuts he wants) Congress is going to say take your pick and he's gonna have to chose Louisiana. The long Iraqi civil war has already started, we've had little effect except to ignite it. We have no choice but get the hell out of the way. What a fuck-up!
You're old like me--how can you possibly rationalize this incredible failure? I'm no peace-monger or feel-good hippy. I hesitantly supported going there because I believed Colin Powell...then I found out it was all false. The hippies and the peace-mongers, and Jim McDermott were right.
This war will stain and scar America as long or longer than Vietnam. He's got a Republican Congress and nobody restricting the purse strings or anything else. It's his failure and his alone.
To compare this gigantic, deadly bumble with Clinton's womanizing and the subsequent trumped up bullshit that impeached him is disingenuous and you know it.

Blathering sez "To compare this gigantic, deadly bumble with Clinton's womanizing and the subsequent trumped up bullshit that impeached him is disingenuous and you know it."
I do???? Guess you didn't read anything but the whoring. What's new? Clinton trumps Bush 12 to Zip. I guess that's a big failure. You are right about this being a political blog, but you're hatred of Bush overshadows the fact the you've had your asses kicked so many times, you look forward to it. Wait till Rudi wins in 2008.

Door Emun's Son

Why the Democrats can't win.

If this Katrina relief effort fiasco had occurred while Clinton was in office, dozens of members of congress would be demanding his resignation and/or starting impeachment proceedings.

Yet, not one Democrat has enough balls to do the same regarding Bush.

(Can you imagine if Hillary had called it Corina...not once, but twice...like Laura did?)

That's why the Democrats can't win.

No balls.

blathering michael

Neither Rudi nor McCain will win in '08 because the southern social conservative base of your party won't nominate them because they're pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-stem cell research, etc. Forget about GOP moderates--they're over. After 8 yrs. of this goofball all those rats that deserted the Democrat's ship will be up for grabs again. (author's note: hee, hee)

blathering michael

Door E:
Democrats can't impeach anybody because they're in the minority. That means the GOP has all the committee chairmanships and are the gatekeepers of all bills getting out of committee. Democrats have drawn up bills of impeachment against Bush, but they'll never get out of committee as long as R's are oin the majority.

Just want to know why was clinton impeach for anyuway

Does anyone really believe that conservatives would have accepted the federal government's response to Katrina for ONE SECOND if a DEMOCRAT were President today?

The Clinton bashing is so 1995. Get over yourselves. Your man screwed the pooch but good.

There's just not enough spin to CYA when a whole city is lost on your watch. This is Bush's true legacy.

Failed to heed warnings.
Failed intelligence.
Failed war.
Failed disaster response.
Failed President.

Door Emun's Son

Blathering M.:

You miss my point.

OK, technically, maybe they can't impeach him.

But have you seen one Democrat step in front of a TV camera and DEMAND that Bush resign for this criminal negligence?

It's about balls, not who has a majority. You make power.

And one other question: Where the fuck was the VP?

Isn't this catastrophe exactly what VPs are for?

The President quickly dispatches the VP to Baton Rouge to oversee the entire effort.

I know you guys like to bash KIRO, but Mike Webb and Alan Prell and Dave Ross have been all over this incompetence.

David Williams

Ha ha, you really got me going there for a minute, Darren. I thought you were serious. Obviously you were pulling my leg, pretending to be a mindless supporter of G.W. Bush. Good job!

You gotta love Babs Bush and her "clutch my pearls" routine while lamenting on all "those people" arriving in Houston. Maybe they can forage for supplies at wealthy Bush "Pioneer" supporters mansions

On Friday, Tom DeLay visited the Astrodome and commented to some of the survivors that this looked like it would be fun --" kind of like camping!" Then he said to two little boys nearby, " You're having a great time aren't you!" They nodded yes, but looked confused.

Note to the GOP: Please continue to show America how out of touch your leaders are. We are enjoying it.
