Brian suits: "I AM a bit of an ass..."

Suits KFI 1LA talker and former Seattleite Bryan Suits (KFI m-f, 7-10p) says he agrees with one of our commenters, who wrote that he is a bit of an ass.

"I am a bit of an ass and in fact purchased a Nautilus machine to enhance that part. I lack empathy, and I'm cold-blooded but I'm here to tell you I treat people the way they should be treated."

He says a conversation reported by BlatherWatch "never happened, never would have happened."

Are glenn beck's values mormon values?


We''re used to right-wingers using their orthodox Christian religious views to justify their crazypants politics, ie: Rev. Ken Hutcherson, Fred Phelps, and Pat Robertson. And they have been very public about hitching their political wagons to their spiritual star.

Glennn Beck, who has a double chin on the back of his head, has rattled the tea cups the last few days by blatantly appealing to racist elements of the cable/radio consuming public by claiming that President Obama has a "... deep-seated hatred for white people, [and] white culture."

So what else is new, you ask? Watch the video, this was different, and worse than usual. Fox News actually issued a statement distancing the network from Beck's remarks. How often does that happen?

Mormon But Beck's no evangelical. He's a Latter Day Saint, a religion that vowed only 30-some years ago to take down the "Mormon Curtain" and allow interracial marriages, and African-Americans to have full clerical privileges. This didn't come easy and not without much legal pressure and church resistance. The IRS had to threaten to cancel the church's non-profit tax exempt status if it didn't end its institutionalized racism; university sports teams were refusing to compete in Utah. In the nick of time, Church elders  received a new revelation from God to end their practices of discrimination. (God's expeditious timing saved them a shitload of legal bills...)

Beck's latest remarks, the uptick in right-wing racist rhetoric, the "birther" extremism is, as Salon's Joan Walsh notes:

"Increasingly, the ranks of the racially blinkered (and I include MSNBC's Pat Buchanan here) are playing victim, insisting Obama's modest moves -- appointing a Latina justice, using the Gates case to speak out against racial profiling -- are reversing the racial order wholesale, and putting white men on the bottom of the pile."

Hates whites? The first president with a black father, a white mother, raised by grandparents on his mother's side? It's ridiculous on its face. But maybe we're seeing the fruits of LDS prophet Brigham Young that the punishment for mixing your blood with the Seed of Cain (blacks) was that the Curse of Cain would come upon you and your future generations.

Rush, Beck, et al are cynically trading on racism to make a living at a time when a hardluck economy makes racial and other scapegoating seem righteous to a certain segment of the downtrodden. How can that be moral or acceptable in anyone's religion?

HeadfatIt's clear that Fox News suits will continue to duck this as an issue. It's the bottomline for them, too - Beck is a hot cable property - as Chris Matthews points out: he speaks to many more than those who read the Washington Post.)

But does Beck's blatherings reflect a tacit OK from a usually well message-disciplined LDS Church?
 
(His LDS membership hasn't hurt his career arund here- considering the Church's outright ownership of Bonneville International who owns his Seattle home KTTH, as well as the radio KIROs.)

The Saints should know a thing or two about being scapegoated- they've played the role many times in their past. (Those same evangelicals preach daily that Mormons are a cult "of the devil.")

We know the Church can't control everything their members say in public. But Beck's ever-increasing right-wing racist rhetoric, Mormon racial history, splatters the detritus of his remarks back on his purported religious and spiritual home.

PPMs yanked off eBay

Wanna look cool, and know that somebody gives a shit what media you watch or listen to? Ppm

You missed your chance, although you really never had one.

A few hours ago, before Arbitron had them yanked down from eBay, you could bid for not only 3 Portable Personal Meters, but also an PPM encoder. The seller claimed they'd all "fallen off the truck" (a shopping opportunity also known as a "NY White Sale").

NPR steps up: will KUOW take the challenge?

KUOW It's oft joked in commercial talk radio, that 34% of topics are stolen from NPR.

Local news outlets- KIROFM famously- rely heavily on public radio news for ideas and stories.

NPR is making that even easier. They announced today a revamping of their web site and digital news delivery that will make their news product not only easier to access in all platforms, but will have more emphasis on text, supplying almost instant transcripts of broadcast pieces.

Let the stealing begin!

Angry black man in the white house- get out your guns, hide your wives!

The right is dragging out the "scary black man" canard again after President Obama led with his heart by calling Cambridge police "stupid," after the Professor Gate dust-up last week.

Barack obama 00bIt was the kind of foot-in-mouth the President rarely gets himself into, and he's walking it back, needful as he is to get health care back in the center of the conversation.
