We've always heard that when it comes to sports announcing, Dori Monson (KIROFM m-f, 812-3p) is a bit of a poser (we wouldn't know, we loath sports almost as much as we do him).
Maybe we misunderestimated Dori's talents.
A KIRO source says he'll announce next week he's giving up his longtime news talk show (13 years at KIRO!) to do syndicated ESPN sports talkery. But, this insider says, will "still work for 710 ESPN on a seasonal basis."
"There's talk of a sports talk show at least locally," says our guy. "But I don't think a decision has been made... [Dori] is pretty mum about that."
Dori definitely will join Art Thiel, Clare Farnsworth, Jim Moore, Dave Wyman and Bill Haselman on Sports Insiders, a newly announced regular feature on the upcoming Kevin Calabro Show (KIROFM m-f, 3-6p).
Other than that, we're not sure of anything yet: like what kind of syndication Dori has been promised by the sports giant. Our source is pretty sure it's radio only. (no shit)
Dori has been out this week ostensibly on a spring-break vacation with his family, but our source says the week included face time and a little winery/dinery with ESPN suits at their new West Coast Broadcast Headquarters at LA Live.
Our guy says that Dori privately told co-workers he was worried news talk could not be successful on FM in Seattle. "He finally took an offer that was made a couple of years ago. He's going for it."
Who will take the prime real estate on the dial given up by the self-described King of Seattle Talk Radio? Our guy says a good bet would be Dori's producer, Phil Vandervort, (KIROFM Sundays 4-7p) at least for a while.
(This fine post is total April Fool's bullshit borne of a restless mind, and wishful thinking).

Dori is a fine broadcaster. I wish him the best. I hope he doesn't leave tha area. We go back a long ways.

Dori cut his teeth in Seattle radio hosting a sports talk show with local sportswriter, Steve Kelly. He knows his way around the sports world and will be very successful doing sports.

I don't think it would be a good move for him to leave his bread and butter gig.

I think you've come up with a fine April Fools Day joke, Michael. Nice work!
Posted by: RobP | April 01, 2009 at 06:24 AM
If only it were true!
(Except the part about Phil V taking over the time slot)
Posted by: AprilMayJune | April 01, 2009 at 06:28 AM
This IS a joke, right? Phil is TERRIBLE and not only that, he Dori-Monson brown-nosing act will never fly.
April Fool!

Not so sure about the joke part. Dori is going to make some kind of an announcement friday, according to what I just heard on KIR0.

Interesting side note... somebody has included a familiar snippet about Dori's name in his wikipedia entry.

Ha HA. great Wikipedia note. Dori's whole life and demeanor has been determined by his lack of heighth and his girl's name.

Be still my heart. This isn't an AF joke, is it Michael?
Posted by: Cyn | April 01, 2009 at 12:32 PM
Of course it is an April fools joke. ESPN in Bristol, CT would never hire a mediocre sports broadcaster like Dori
Posted by: Brent Kremen | April 01, 2009 at 12:54 PM
April Fools joke or good suggestion?
Posted by: AuthenticAndrew | April 01, 2009 at 01:00 PM
The main reason I think this is an April fool's joke is that Phil is sooooooooo bad at radio! First off, Phil the news junkie??? Lame name. His transparent delivery of the formula: Topic+Angle=How do you feel about it. I can't bear to listen to Phil even when I agree with his angle.
The believable part of the post is that talk radio not surviving on FM. I tried this morning to quickly change over on my home portable, but when it wasn't quick I gave up and went to 770 instead. Even in my truck, I usually stay on the AM dial just because it is easier.
Went to wikipedia entry, thats great. I think I might edit it to include the notion that he is also believed to suffer from short man's syndrome by many.

Happy April Fools! But remember, Dori used to be Tony Ventrella's LONGTIME sports producer on KING TV long before he ever even thought about radio. He used to live and breathe sports. Seems a good fit.

Good riddance little man. You were small ain stature ans small in soul. I'll never forget the shows where you ridiculed and mocked Celine Dion's tear-filled speech in belalf of the Katrina victoms. You're a punk, Dori. Go to Hell. p.s i don';t beleieve this is an April Fool if so i assume we;ll know by the end of the night.

Dori "Moose" Monson reduced to yukking it up with sportsradio knuckleheads (the absolute dumbest genre of talkradio listeners/callers, as well as the smallest talkradio audience). How appropriate. this is not a career advance. I'm sure Monson longed for a real national talkradio show- where he could talk about poitics and so forth. He's obviously never going to get that.
Posted by: Tommy008 | April 01, 2009 at 04:33 PM
so this is the 'national" show that Monson claimed to have been offered some years back? he mentioned this several times on his show 3 or 4 years ago, but never mentiones that it was only a sportstalk gig. Really kind of dishonest and sleazy on his part, since 99% of listeners would naturally assume he was talking about s regular newstalk job. Monson hasn't done a regular sportstalk show, other than sideline/weekend stuff for decades.
Posted by: Tommy008 | April 01, 2009 at 04:41 PM
Monsons fears about the move to 92.3 were not unfounbded. i notice that it has a weak signal- like going from a blotorch to a llittle lighter flame. hahaha Dori hahah Dori you piece of crap - been to the management with tapes of Mike Webb's show lately? good riddance, Turdboy.
Posted by: Tommy008 | April 01, 2009 at 05:22 PM
Michael, you should write a novel. hee hee.
Posted by: Virginia-Virginia | April 01, 2009 at 05:27 PM
DORI has done the Sehawks pre-game show for years, and has had great sports banter with players, guests, and his cast of regulars, Sam Adkins, Paul Moyer, Brock and Dave Wyman. If anybody here in Blather country actually LISTENED to what they yak about, you'd know that. ME? I think it's a joke. Dori's ratings and KIRO's are top of the market. I hear that KIRO is doing the lengthy paperwork to snatch up another AM signal to broadcast the talkers alongside the FM 97.3. At any rate, Dori Monson is a highly talented radio man with a great radio show. Period.

For you lib whiners, Dori is ranked in the top 25 of most popular local hosts. I dont have a dog in this fight as I dont listen to him, but looks like you lose.
I see our open administration, tax cheating appointing, promise breaking mulatto and his Skag stepped on their dicks with another inappropiate gift to the Queen Mother.
You & the MSM are being very quiet about Plug's daughter wanting a garden hose to suck more coke up her nostrils so she can join her brain dead dad in occupying an empty skull. And she will.
If it were Bristol, Jenna or Barb it would be on the front page of the NYT.

Celine Dion donated a million dollars of her own money to Katrina victims while Punky Monson mocked and ridiculed her. Monson woudn't donate a fart at a beaneating contest, unless it was money donated to his bornagain Christian church. That doesn't count. Donating money of that sort, which goes to things like churchfunded missions,( where you have to isten to a bornagain Christian, hourlong "earbanging" sermon in order to eat dinner) is total bullshit. True charity doesn't have religious strings attached to it.

Wild Bill,
I am a regular and longtime listener of Hawk Talk and couldn't disagree more about Dori being good at that show. He tries really hard to schmooze with the jocks and impress everyone with his grasp of the sport, but really who wants to hear about Football from a guy who never played it at the higher levels of competition. He even mocked me when I called him up on the show for saying that I had been watching the Hawks for 30 years, he said "that would be great except for the fact that the Seahawks hadn't been in existence for 30 years." and hung up on me making me look stupid while he chortled on the air. Fact was it was the Hawks 30th year and the Organization was making much ballyhoo about that fact. You would figure the host of the show Hawk Talk would have known that but he didn't. I checked my facts and called back and told Phil-the-brownose-junkie what was what citing the Hawks own official Yearbook. Did Dori correct himself? No bcuz Dori is too little of a Man to do that. He does coach little girls basketball and talks alot about his "girls" all the time, so often its kinda creepy.

Habu,
Who you calling a SKAG? Not the first lady I hope. You would certainly be in a very minority opinon about that one. Mostly Michelle has been compared favorable to the likes of Jacki Kennedy whom was considered to be Americas closet thing to royalty we have ever had. I really don't think what the gift was should keep you laying awake at night either. Jeez the queen gave the Obama's a picture of herself, I think I would rather have the IPOD myself. Don't go dissing the First Lady, its just so lowbrow of you. Can't you come up with reasoned arguments instead of far stretched ad hominems?
Posted by: thothman | April 01, 2009 at 07:57 PM
I am not dissing that shaved ape. She gives every appearence of being mobsterlike in her ugly, slouching, plodding gait that matches her loathing inside.
Zero needs to send her to finishing school. She is several credits shy.
If those two are close to royalty in your mind you need therapy.

shaved ape...sounds racist to me

"The loons were out in full force on Wednesday, attacking President Obama for giving the Queen of England an iPod containing video of her 2007 state visit to the U.S. because — get this — she already owns a 2005 edition iPod Mini. You know, the kind without video.
That they were offended over this triviliality was enough comedy to warrant a mid-week Loon Watch, but the fact that the Queen requested the iPod and that her spokesman said the Obamas "scored a hit" sealed the deal: a Loon Watch was called for."
Mouth-breathers like Habu need this kind of stuff to survive.
He and the ever-spewing Hannity and Billo conveniently forget to mention that the I-pod was not even the main gift. The Obamas gave her a rare signed Richard Rodgers songbook, and the I-pod was loaded with classic showtunes that the Queen and Prince Phillip really like, in addition to:
* Photos from the Queen's 2007 White House State Visit
* Photos from the Queen's 2007 Jamestown, Va., Visit
* Photos from the Queen's 2007 Richmond, Va., Visit
* Video from the Queen's 1957 Jamestown Visit
* Video from the Queen's 2007 Jamestown Visit
* Video from the Queen's 2007 Richmond Visit
* Photos from President Obama's Inauguration
But none of that really matters because Habu is just looking for chances to put on his hood.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON!! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!! KIRO 710 will be taken over in a matter of hours by knuckleheads- mouthbreathing, cretinous sportstalk callers; exjock talkhosts, apes in suits, pontificating in banal, stultifying sentences and paragraphs about mindless pointless subjects (sports teams and statistics). A grand descent in anti-intellectual nonsense and dreck is about to COME TO KIRO710 AM, a once proud station
Posted by: Tommy008 | April 02, 2009 at 09:46 AM
Hannity gives reacharounds as gifts.
Limbaugh doesn't... he doesn't like to get his soft little hands dirty. He wants to always be clean and ready in case a plate of buffalo wings shows up.

And who sniffed it out first? Thank you....
It's really amusing to watch how some of the regulars work themselves into a frenzy over Monson - just goes to show even the lefties have to follow his every move.

"But none of that really matters because Habu is just looking for chances to put on his hood"
Since I dont have a hood perhaps you could recommend a senior senator from your party that could provide a fitting and recommend a threat count. Or you could have a typical looking progressive woman lend me hers.

Indeed, the Obama's have done more to heal our relations around the world in 24 hrs, considering the 8 years of idiot bush. It is truly refreshing.

"Maybe we misunderestimated Dori's talents."
Perhaps. Interesting that both Dori and Dave Ross were among the top 25 non-syndicated talk show hosts in the USA, per Habu.
Yes, Obama has also rekindled Jimmy Carter's vision by the Arab world of the US being a pushover - Way to go - BO ! Obama-bots be careful what you wish for - just because you believe we live in the 21st century version of Camelot aka Obama-lot, doesn't mean things will be hunky-dory for the leftists. i'll stay poised for that veritable rude awakening.

zero bows to a king.
Then, the zero stammers, wanders, and pauses like a tree sloth who smoked a bowl.
Very impressive.
One can only imagine the yuks the other leaders must have at the zero's once they are behind closed doors.

Well Habu, it is your imagination, ya know?

That Saturday evening sports program with Kelly comprised Dori's best days in my opinion. I think it was Saturday (Sunday?). Came on about 4 pm. I liked it a lot.
Straight downhill from there.
