Tom Taylor of RadioInfo writes in his annual list, "Who had a good year in 2008?"
“Progressive/liberal talk show hosts”, says longtime radio pro and Lesley University prof Donna Halper, in Boston. She says “it’s true the progressive and liberal talk...
(photo: Stephanie Miller, KPTK m-f, 6-9a)
personalities weren’t on as many stations as righties like Limbaugh and Hannity. But for those who had long predicted that progressive talk could never survive, the format demonstrated in a number of cities that it did have staying power.”
She says “Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller both turned a profit (again) and both picked up more affiliates and were regularly seen on TV as
pundits.” Donna also says that “the frequently-maligned Air America is still on the air, and its Rachel Maddow became a breakout TV star on MSNBC. It was certainly a good year for Rachel.”

but they won't have W to kick around anymore.
now we'll see if they can keep it going.
should be interesting.
prediction:
olberman burns out, rhodes burns out, but maddow improves overtime and keeps her show.
Posted by: Puget Sound | December 30, 2008 at 12:46 PM
How can they burn out when we have your side and the Magic Negroes? Now back to the Stepin Pugchit show...
Posted by: Coiler | December 30, 2008 at 12:59 PM
My prediction:
Maddow makes real news relevant again and the rest of the media sheep will follow along.
Over-sixty-year-old rural white men will die off.
Americans will get smart again.
The world will like and respect us again.
Praise the Lord! (who will, btw, be back in church where it belongs)

BTW, I'm listening to Ed right now. I've learned to respect his ability to talk to anybody. Without put-downs. He's got his facts, and he knows how to respond. He listens and he lets you have your pointof view.
Chucks, Steven, you'd like him if you gave him a chance. You'd even talk a little football with him.

I love that picture of Stephanie. You should send it so they can post it in the Gallery on her website.
She and Jim Ward are both down with the nasty flu, so they did a Best Of this morning, Frangela will be in tomorrow, Best Of on New Year's Day and then Frangela again on Friday. Joanie, have you ever heard them? Francis and Angela..they are really funny.

Im hoping Rachel covers this today:
"Merrill Lynch received TARP funds--taxpayer money. Lots of our money has fallen into the hands of executives who destroyed and looted their companies and are walking away with huge payouts. Peter Kraus is one such executive.
720 Park Avenue in New York City. It's one of the most expensive buildings in Manhattan. Peter Kraus and his wife Jill, just paid $37 million for an apartment in this building. This year, Peter Kraus received a payout of $25 million dollars for working at Merrill Lynch for just three months."
From the WSJ
Merrill Lynch’s Peter Kraus Collects $25 Million, Then Resigns
Now, former Goldmanite Peter Kraus is getting his $25 million bonus, according to people familiar with the situation, though he has been at Merrill only three months. Kraus left Merrill Friday, shortly after after his rich exit package was triggered by the Merrill sale. In a year when some bankers are being paid with junk, Kraus’s exit payment is a stunner that represents to about 0.1% of Bank of America’s $25 billion capital injection from the U.S. government."
In New York like most localities, real estate sales are public records. A local New York Real Estate paper, The Real Deal searches for high profile sales in in doing so, the newspaper often turns up examples of staggering greed and excess.
Oh yes...Goldman Sachs, which was in such "dire" straits a few weeks ago, announced that their tax bill this year will be a whopping 1%. What percentage of my income am I paying again? Maybe I should invest in some of those off-shore businesses that don't pay taxes at all.

Stephanie Miller is so hot. Too bad she's not a Republican any more.

What is it going to take to get us out in the streets?
I haven't seen it in MSM nor even talked about on the left, but the right (Newsmax) and several other sites put out a notice that Paulson has said there might be need for military intervention on American soil if things get worse. He's advocating that the military - martial law - be used to keep Americans from rioting or protesting or whatever.
"U.S. Military Preparing for Domestic Disturbances"
Not sure what to think about that.

Big Ed is talking about his car being keyed and vandalized. He's going through the list of tortures that could apply. He's pretty mad. He's good natured like you chucks. You'd like him. Honest.
Posted by: joanie | December 30, 2008 at 02:22 PM
Big Ed was a conservative talker in the Minnesota/Dakota area for years per my friends from the area. He made the switch to stand out.
Glad it's working out for him.
Posted by: Puget Sound | December 30, 2008 at 02:36 PM
I'm laughing so hard at Big Ed! I don't usually do that but hes just flailing around and saying the most off the wall stuff about his car getting keyed. I'm loving it!
He's funny.
A caller just came in who said his wife used to watch nothing but fox and didn't know the difference. He got her to listen to Big Ed and now she's hooked and smarter. You guys afraid he might turn you liberal?
Also, he uses the word "ass" quite a bit and I'm thinking, when did that word become so commonplace? I think it's become respectable.
Posted by: joanie | December 30, 2008 at 02:44 PM
I disagree with the decision not to seat Roland Burris. Where are Reid and Pelosi when it comes to all the criminal activities of the last eight years?
Blago has not been indicted or convicted. He's still the governor. His appointment should stand.
Reid and Pelosi make the Democratic Party look ridiculous. They don't know when to keep their heads down. People are mad about $700 mllion in bailouts for millionaires and these two are taking their great stand against a good man and a corrupt governor? More like grand-standing to me.
Unbelieveable.
Posted by: joanie | December 30, 2008 at 03:11 PM
Sheesh Joanie, enough with the Ed Schultz fan club stuff.
I listen to him every day and he is doing everything BUT change my point of view. He's mildly entertaining but doesn't come across as smart to me. He tends to overlook the obvious with most of his arguments, a lot like Dave Ross, acts stupid or shuts down completely when faced with a rational intelligent opposing viewpoint.
I must say the liberal talkers are sounding every bit as shrill as Hannity or Rush in my opinion. What happened to the love? Maybe they are afraid they won't have GW to blame for every problem in the world soon. Reality does and will bite.
Posted by: Brian | December 30, 2008 at 04:07 PM
The wino lamented about pelosi and reid making the dims look ridiculous. You forgot clinton, schumer, kennedy, wexler, franks, our two moronic senators, feinstein, waters, waxman, bagdag jim, obama, boxer, insley, smith, dodd, kucinich, levin, biden, and kerry to name a few who also do a great job in supporting your statement. No shortage of cartoon characters.

Ed was a conservative until he met his wife. She worked extensively with the poor and homeless, and after following her around for a period of time, he found his outlook on those in need changed dramatically, and went from there. I don't think Ed is liberal like
Stephanie and Rachel.
If you want to research someone who took advantage of the marketplace, wasn't Rush more of a centristish kinda of Dem at one time?
Posted by: sparky | December 30, 2008 at 06:16 PM
Hey Joanie, that was an interesting article. But have you considered who is going to be the President and order that action if it comes necessary?
Posted by: Nevets | December 30, 2008 at 06:29 PM
And I agree, they should seat the Chocolate Senator Burris. Like Rep. Rush (D-Il) says, (not in so many words) we need a token black man in the U.S. Senate.

If Gov. Rod Blagojevich thought that he was regaining the political high ground, or at least a little credibility, with fellow Democrats by appointing former Attorney General Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate, he was apparently mistaken. And CBS 2's Mike Parker reports that Blagojevich has hit a virtual brick wall of opposition to the move, from Illinois to Washington.
Sources on Capitol Hill tell CBS 2 Tuesday night the Senate will refuse to seat Burris. And a line in the Constitution does grant the Senate the right to reject the selection. "

For Tommy 008
Hey, thought you would like to see Tom Leykiss circa 2007. If you recall Tom use to be a Liberal Talk Show Host and then made the move into his current style about a decade ago. Loves to make fun of how people look.
Here he is at work. Large and in charge.
I liked Tom's serious political talk show back in the day. Not a fan of his current style

Happy Birthday Joanie.

...or shuts down completely when faced with a rational intelligent opposing viewpoint.
Brian, he stops when he's said all he has to say. He doesn't argue like we do. He respects the opinion of his callers. Hard to believe, isn't it? That's one of the reasons I've learned to like him. He gives it a try but stops before getting mad or trying to force his point. Kind of different, isn't it?
Steven, I have never posted that it is my birthday so get it right. Last year Fremont remembered that it is my birthday - tomorrow - yes, I'm a New Year's Eve babe and posted such.
Thank you all for wishing me a happy birthday. I appreciate that.
Now, did anyone watch Rachel interview Burris? He made very good points and is perfectly happy and thinks it perfectly appropriate that Blago appointed him. He knows he's just a place holder. Again, what's the big deal. Why aren't we going after the real criminals who have destroyed this country?
I usually agree with Rachel but occasionally I don't. She gave Burris a courteous but tough time. He held his own.
Another thing that is getting sort of old is the prop 8 issue in California. I'm absolutely for equal rights and gay marriage. But between Rachel and David Bender who did most of the talking while his guests listened again today, they might be risking their broadcast time if they tire people with their gay agendas.
Rachel really has a "political" agenda but soemtimes she gives it more time than I think it is worth. But then, I listen a lot. For others who don't, perhaps lots of coverage is needed. She needs to make sure she stops short of a whine. David Bender has already crossed that line. (He sat in for Reagan again today.
Finally, Steven, I don't know what to think of that article. My hope is that with the change in leadership in this country to man who is school in the laws of the Constitution, we will avoid martial law and allow citizens to protest or respond in any lawful way. And "any lawful way" is not defined by what rightwingers want. So we'll see.
I just turned Malloy off. He's ranting about Blago now too. You know, we've got bigger fish to fry.

Your 9:34 post was reminiscent of days gone by. Good post. And Happy B-day.

Posted by: Puget Sound | December 30, 2008 at 09:47 PM
But I disagree. As nice as Burris comes across in the Maddow interview, he shouldn't take it under these circumstances.
And for Prop 8, it's easy for those of us who are not gay or lesbian to be cavalier with their rights. It should be an important issue of the day. I'd be damn pissed if someone voted away my right in such a fashion. I understand that you and I are in agreement on the prop 8 fiasco and would have voted the same way in Cal. I just think it should be out there and discussed.
Posted by: Puget Sound | December 30, 2008 at 09:52 PM
You idiot, it is out there and discussed. That's my point. If they over-discuss it, they will alienate people. It is a sensitive issue.
Posted by: joanie | December 30, 2008 at 09:57 PM
Would the Supremes rule on this again? They already did so...I posted that earlier. There is precedence for the Senate to have to seat him if he has the qualifications.

They are talking about it on KGO. Good discussion.
I'm loving this: "EXCLUSIVE: RNC draft rips Bush's bailouts"

So you want gays and lesbians to just STFU and be grateful? It's akin to MLK being told 'don't push too hard you'll alienate people' by well meaning Whites back in the 60's.
51% of the people have just voted to disenfranchise a portion of the population a right to marry. A right that they had.
All they wanted was to have the state recognize their rights in the same form/fashion granted to heterosexuals.
Sheesh. Jerry Brown -the AG of California- gets it.

I'm standing strong with Blago.
Sick of all the racist neocons here bashing Blago for appointing a strong black man to the US Senate. The Gov has been charged with a crime by Bush cronies but not convicted. He still has his position and still has all of his constitutional powers. Burris has the potential to be one of the best Senators since Obama, Amy Klobuchar and Bernie Sanders. Blago has been a fighter for unions and it's just Bush cronies who are out to get him. The fact that they're investigating Blago for appointing an African-American to the Senate proves they are racist slime. Here's hoping after Obama is inaugurated he fires all the DOJ lawyers and Blago can continue fighting for working people. Go Gov!

But please just let it infect further. And encourage Nevets & his ilk to be more brave about it all Enough with the "chocolate" "token" "Macaca" wink-wink nudge-nudge KKKode. Have them drop some balls already & bring back the N-Word!... (oh shit that's right, Chip Saltsman nearly did!)
Just have them give us more of their true selves - it's so hard living such a PC masquerade.
Amen.
OH! and give us more of the "Sarah Palin: Leader of the GOP" memes. After all, we know it was all Katie and Charlie's fault for those super-tough questions. With a true-blooded wingnut like Palin, how can they possibly loose?

Rep. Rush Dec. 9th 2008
"I believe that the acts that are alleged to have been committed by the Governor are so heinous that he has forfeited his right to appoint someone to fill the seat of President-Elect Barack Obama. My bottom line is that the Governor should not be the one to make the appointment to this important office.
Rep Rush Dec 30th 2008
U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush forcefully backed Blagojevich's decision on the basis of race
What a difference 3 weeks makes. Or could it be that Roland Burris is black that made Rep Rush change his mind. What do you think Paladin? Could it be Rep Rush is just trying to do what Mayor Nagin did in New Orleans by keeping this Senate seat from Illinois "Chocolate".
From the link above...
"Rush, an Illinois Democrat who also is black, for weeks had urged Blagojevich to name a black successor for Obama"
Paladin, your talents are better off getting waitress' fired instead of calling out racism where there is none.

Merci
Please look at Gov Blago. At 7 percent approval he is trying to gin up support from the one community he can that will stick by him in thick and thin. Given the facts and circumstances pretty much anyone who accepted an appointment from Blago is going to be looked upon with suspicion.
The first individual he 'asked' to be appointed was an african american that had the good sense not to be tainted with an association that comes with such a pick by Blago. Listen to Clarence Page, the african american reporter out of Chicago. He said that Burris has wanted to be Senator for years in the worst way. Looks like Burris is getting his wish.
At 71 he knows he has to grab the ring now or risk getting shunted aside.
Posted by: Puget Sound | January 01, 2009 at 07:40 AM
African americans proved loyal to OJ and Bill Clinton during their times of trouble. Blago is attempting to do the same thing. Hence the words of Congressman Bobby Rush.
Posted by: Puget Sound | January 01, 2009 at 07:41 AM
I agree about Burris grabbing the brass ring while he can. At 71 it was now or never, and if he is seated, which I think he has to be, per Supreme Court ruling years ago, he will be voted out in 2 years.
Other African Americans that Blago picked turned him down, saying they would be honored to be a Senator, but not under these circumstances. Maybe what we need is a nation-wide law that requires an immediate special election when a vacancy opens up. No clue as to where we would get the money to run one.
Posted by: sparky | January 01, 2009 at 11:22 AM
It is just Chicago, Cook County and Illinois politics. It is what those folks chose to live under. No need to mess with the Constitution over this thing.
