Frank Shiers has been fired from KIRO (10-1a) ending a station old KIRO tradition of live and local radio in that slot. Shiers will continue doing weekend work on Bonneville music station KBSG
The syndicated Phil Hendrie Show will be carried live starting tonight-- he's been doing taped show on KTTH from 2-6a.

Ode To Frank Shiers , We very seldom agreed on the issues of the day, but I have to admit Frank did quit hanging up on me and let me have my say! Bye Bye Frank, and goodbye to live, and local.

Hey, Olde Marine, glad to hear it. Maybe I should have given him another chance.
See, Michael, how lively things get when a good radio story emerges? Enjoyed reading the posts.
I still miss Erin. :)

As I cruise through my 40's, I realize how little I really know about a lot of things. So it annoys me to no end when some smarmy twerp tries to school me topics I really do know about...
Now Dave Ross gives the impression of learning every damn day - and trying to.

" Take an interest in ya child's classroom. There's always a seat in there, wid ya name on it." Call me a curmudgeon(or a middleaged man typing in his underwear) but why do they do a radio psa for education advancement with a guy talking in ebonics. Offensive.
Posted by: Tommy008 | January 07, 2008 at 11:57 PM
There is a God.
But how will I live without that condescending, smarmy tool singing his own praises all the time and cutting off callers? How can I live without hearing how She Upon Whom the Sun Rises and Sets greets each and every day? No longer will I have to wait to see how Shiers managed to weave his darling daughter (SUWTSRAS- see above) into every topic - no matter how unrelated...
Good riddance. And Shiers was not anything "Live & Local" to brag about... more like Lifeless and Self-absorbed...

Hendrie is funny as hell when he's on his game which is mostly. The bits where he's talking to the woman with the husband muttering in the background are my favorites. I notice he's revamped his show to where he's doing more straight political and social commentary, a good move for him. We don't need live and local every frigging shift, and I'm glad Mormon Management realizes that. Thank you Mormon Management for putting on Phil in a listenable time slot.
Posted by: Tommy008 | January 08, 2008 at 12:36 AM
Hendrie's show works like this: He is the radio host, obviously, but he also does the voices of the people he's supposedly interviewing. And the amazing thing is it's all in real time. The basic premise of the show is he has on guests (him doing a voice) who say controversial things in order to outrage those listeners who aren't in on the gag in order to get them to call in. The guy's a genius at what he does, but it does get old after a while.

I made the "fat, dumb dope" comment, not Sarge.
I stand by it, a simple comment is called for, when referring to a simple mind.

I was shocked when I turned to KIRO and found that Frank was not there. I did not agree with his views most of the time,l but found him to be fair and intelligent. KIRO has gone down hill since they fired Mike Webb. I shall no longer listen to their night programs. What I hear of Frank's replacement was nothing but stupid.
Posted by: Sally Bukowski | January 08, 2008 at 10:21 AM
KIRO is the last holdout of live & local, and they are whittling that down talk host by talk host. they will not listen to this board or anyone else for that matter. Who the fuck is next? I mean besides, obviously Goldy and Styble? Sadly it probably won't be Ron and Don. Will they give Luke a real chance? it's doubtful. They'll just off him like they did Allan Prell.
Posted by: singe | January 08, 2008 at 11:57 AM
A lot of us can't listen to the local jocks during the day. We are stuck with syndicate shows and news almost totally in the evening. I get all I want of that off MSNBC and Fox News when I get home. Burbank's new show, which I think I'll like eventually is about himself, not local issues. Why do they hate us?
Posted by: Beryl | January 08, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Radio stations used to serve the listers. Now they just serve themselves. This syndicated crap is just cheap.
Posted by: itchy & scratchy | January 08, 2008 at 12:08 PM
My Prediction
KIRO Future Firings
Jan 25 2008-Ron and Don (replaced with Savage)
Jan 28 2008-Goldy (replaced with Lynn Samuels)
Jan 28 2008-Bryan Styble (replaced with Hoax to Hoax)
Feb 4 2008-Carl Jeffers (replaced with Bill Bennett re-runs)
Feb 22 2008-Dori Monson (replaced with Jim Rome)
Feb 25 2008-Dave Ross goes with national syndication
With the except of Cisco Morris and that chef dude...
Good Bye Live and Local!!!!

I happen to like 'listers', like Letterman's top 10 in descending order.

Why would the owners, who live in Salt Lake, care about Seattle listeners?
Posted by: sparky | January 08, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Local yokel talk show hosts stink. They get no ratings. KIRO has tried desperately to find a local host who can attrack an audience. NY Vinnie, Erin Hart, Fred Ebert, Rick Miller, Mike Brown, Lou Pate, Frank Shiers, Allan Prell, and Turi Tyder all ended up in the radio scrapheap. Syndicated talkers became syndicated because they have exceptional broadcasting talent. Phil Hendrie is better than any local talker currently available for that timeslot.
Posted by: abob | January 08, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Dori is doing a cheap 10-minute plug of some Rich Little wannabe voice impersonator.
This station has really gone off the deep end.
What the hell do they pay these talk show hosts?
You often think that these are sophisticated operations when in fact there shady, cut and paste, say what you need to say rubbish.
Email me for a toxic loan.

luckily i cud pick up KGO each night when frank shiers came on
he was a dori clone and dori became such an ad whore now.
i immediately shut off the radio when i hear him and the other 2 dicks start in with catlin capital
its like the 3 of them gang up on you pushing this mortgage scam
they jumped the shark when they fired mike webb RIP
Posted by: franco | January 08, 2008 at 01:32 PM
I won't miss Frank. I tried to listen to him but like with Dori, I never learned anything other than his "right wing" (he and monson call themselves independent....yeah of course they are...independent from reason) version of reality.
Posted by: jamesb | January 08, 2008 at 01:55 PM
Why do voice impersonators always do the same voices? John Madden, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, etc. I can understand doing presidents and yes those celebrities talk funny but what a tortured cliche it has been for such a long time. The guy on Dori's show had a horrible Adam Sandler, it sounded like he was on steroids.
Posted by: AuthenticAndrew | January 08, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Dang make a "joke" about Frank talking about his daughter eating crayons and a few weeks later Franks Fried.
I will admit I had troubles listening to his show at times. Especially when waiting forever for him to even choose a topic.
... sigh I miss Fred Ebert
But to go to a Syndicated National Show... has Kiho (I know Kiro) Radio lost its cotton-picken mind?
Posted by: Gonefishing for life | January 08, 2008 at 02:30 PM
Heck yes! I was so happy to hear Phil Hendrie is now on Kiro! He is my favorite radio talk show host of all time. Thanks KIRO!
Posted by: slugworth | January 08, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Well I liked Frank Shiers shows... most of the time. If there was a subject I didn't like I changed the station.
What I liked most is that Frank would cover some of the important local issues like Sound Transit, Eastside rail, etc. and gave the people who work swing/nites the opportunity to sound off...since I don't listen to KIRO during the day. KIRO has been the only outlet for local issues that I've found on the radio, except may KVI once in awhile...
But to replace him with Phil Hendrie? Who the hell is that? I listened the TBTL show off/on from 8:30 to 10... imho Jen is working her way into a full time radio host gig and I didn't like the show...so it better grow. I could give a S*** about them drinking before the show or after... great thing to tell their listeners.
Hendrie... well, if you like a guy who talks with some woman from New Hampshire about Hillary and that Hillary have "personal" problems.. and talking about PMS and menustration and how heavy "her flow" is... you'll enjoy it. Yes I heard that interview and it's probably phony...kind of interesting a Mormon owned station would carry that crap... I already wrote KIRO management with my thoughts on this change. I hope Phil Hendrie chokes on the towel from the lady he interviewed. I won't be listening to KIRO tonite at 10 pm... I'll tune in KGO or KNBR.. The TBTL theme, where the hell they get that? This show sounds like another Alise and Ian... Jen should quit ass kissing management and stay off the air. And as someone said earlier.. Ron and Don... you're next...
If KIRO can have Phil Hendrie on, time to bring Tom Leykis back on live...
Posted by: Mike the Driver | January 08, 2008 at 04:47 PM
If some of you anonymous critics were forced to list your personal data along with your postings, I think then your comments would be more measured and accurate. You are really over the top with this anti-Shiers vitriol. It is fine to be critical, but because you can't be seen you say things you know your mother would be ashamed of.
I think Shiers did a good job, and pleased many people. Just not you. That's OK. He did please me, although he was not conservative enough for me.
He brought many local issues to our attention, such as details about the deteriorating ferry system and what can be done about it. No longer.
Now we get another syndicated show, and local issues get brushed aside. It was a big mistake, and I will stop tuning to KIRO.
Posted by: firehawk | January 08, 2008 at 04:51 PM
Frank Shiers was a boring jerk, and I'm trying to be nice. Look at it this way, he can now spend evenings with that daughter he never shuts his big mouth up about.
Phil Hendrie, Yeah!
Posted by: Upton | January 08, 2008 at 05:08 PM
firehawk, (is that your given name Mr. full disclosure?) If we were forced to put personal contact info and ID we'd only be less honest and give crazy talk show hosts more info than they require about our identities.
My problem with Shier's and Monson's conservative style is not that they're conservative, it's that they say "liberals are such hypocrates, they get on conservatives for this and then they're the first ones to do it themselves" as if being liberal was a psychology unto itself. That's like saying all conservatives touch the neighbor boy inapropriately. Michael Medved knows how to be conservative without also insulting the intelegence of any liberal hero who might be listening.
Posted by: AuthenticAndrew | January 08, 2008 at 05:15 PM
As much as most of you claim to hate Dori and Frank, you sure do spend a lot of time, noticing what they're doing, if not listening to them outright. They must be pleased, knowing that so many people obsess over what they do for a living.
Then, you come over here and slowly gnaw on each others' extremities. It's entertaining reading, but not very productive.
What's curious is that you're all so unhappy that you continue to torture yourselves so. If KIRO is the only station you can get, maybe it's time for at trip to Circuit City.
You might live longer without all this stress! :)
Posted by: fordman | January 08, 2008 at 06:09 PM
AuthenicAndrew,
You're right about Medved. Though I'm a liberal, I actually enjoy listening to him. Conspiracy day is a particular favotite.
Medved presents both sides to issues, while not displaying the condescending attitude so prevalent in Monson and Shiers.
Posted by: Upton | January 08, 2008 at 07:19 PM
Fordman, I also wondered why people on BW who claimed they hated Dori spent so much time listening to him, so I asked them why. I think it was either Andrew or Tommy who then said one of the most idiotic statements I have ever heard. It went something like this... "I hate Dori Monson. I can't stand him. But it's more entertaining for me to listen to someone I can't stand, than for me to listen to someone I like. I enjoy listening to people I hate. I don't like listening to people who are smart and who I agree with and like."
Is that the dumbest thing you have ever head?
Posted by: DT | January 08, 2008 at 07:53 PM
That's beautiful. I might have said that? Wow, I'm so proud.
Posted by: AuthenticAndrew | January 08, 2008 at 08:13 PM
Upton, dittos on conspiracy day. It's my favorite talk radio, bar none. Unfortunately I usually miss it because I don't track the lunar cycle. Somebody should announce when it's about to hit.
As a conservative, I've been frustrated by the fact that Medved seems like a complete GOP apoogist. For example, he insists that all the R candidates are superlative (except Paul). To me, they all are mediocre, and only Fred is really even a conservative.
I especially can't stomach Rudy, but that's another story. Medved's bashing of Paul has been unfair and over the top. It's almost like he's being paid. Accusing someone unfairly of being a racist is what I expect from Dems, not from R's against other R's.
Posted by: wutitiz | January 08, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Oh, and them Tommy said this "I also don't like eating food I like. I like eating food I dislike, because it's more interesting that way. It's boring to eat things I enjoy. It's much more entertaining eating foods I can't stand to eat.
He honestly said that.
Posted by: DT | January 08, 2008 at 08:24 PM
And that's why you're conservative, you want to conserve the same old sucky shit at the expense of trying new things and evolving into something better than what we are now. You only listen to people you agree with to ensure that you stay cemented in place. Count equal rights one of many victories for progressive thought. Being progressive is just inherently more brave and admirable than being conservative in thought.
Posted by: AuthenticAndrew | January 08, 2008 at 08:38 PM
AA, if you're saying that I'm missing out on something by not eating foods I can't stand, I will have to disagree with you. You go ahead and avoid foods you like the taste of, choosing to eat foods you dislike. I'll continue to stick to eating foods I like the taste of. If that's narrow-minded of me, so be it.
PS, you're a freak for avoiding things you enjoy, and surrounding yourself with only things you dislike.
Sucks to be you.
Posted by: DT | January 08, 2008 at 09:03 PM
Andrew, "conservative," as I use the term, has nothing to do with conserving things, just as "liberal," as it is generally used, has nothing to do with liberty. If it did, liberals would not be trying to regulate everything under the sun. And 'progressive' has nothing to do with progress. Everyone favors progress. It's just a term that left-wingers decided to revive after 'liberal' had worn out its welcome.
Posted by: wututiz | January 08, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Oh, and hey freak, quote where I've said one conservative thing on this blog. You spend enough time in here posting under different names (sometimes even talking to yourself) that you should be able to name one conservative thing I've said.
Posted by: DT | January 08, 2008 at 09:15 PM
No I actually didn't say that, DT, and of course you know i didn't. As for Dori and Frank, DT it will be disappointing to you lie in wait in the new year as you wait for my posts on them in order to pounce on me personally, because i find both of these pissants to be "old news" now and of marginal interest. I think I and others have said about all that needs to be said about them. Of course if Dori does something beyond even his usual obnoxious poltroonery and asininity, I'll be forced to comment.
Posted by: Tommy008 | January 08, 2008 at 09:34 PM
sorry - should have read "it will be disappointing for you, DT, in the new year, as you lie in wait for my posts on Dori and Frank, so you can pounce on me personally"........
Posted by: Tommy008 | January 08, 2008 at 09:39 PM
To all of you lamenting poor Frank's demise and pleading how many people liked him, why didn't you all show up in the ratings? Hmm?
Posted by: joanie | January 08, 2008 at 10:08 PM
I applaud KIRO for getting rid of Shiers. He was bad radio. Puffed up, ego boy, ex-teacher, know-it all.
But keep Styble? He must work for free.
Posted by: LB | January 08, 2008 at 11:04 PM
It's my understanding that Styble works without pay.
DT, TLDR.
Posted by: AuthenticAndrew | January 09, 2008 at 12:13 AM
It will please all you masochists to know that Shiers will still appear occasionally as a fill in here and there on KIRO.
We can ALL only hope that he gets lots of air time so that those of us who like him will get to hear more, and those of you who don't - but derive such perverse pleasure from hearing someone you hate - can all be happy.
From this forum Shiers appears to be the IDEAL radio host pleasing both the normal and the freaks.
Posted by: firehawk | January 09, 2008 at 12:27 AM
"We don't need live and local every frigging shift."
I disagree. I have satellite radio. If I want syndicated, I can listen to that instead. If local radio stations want local ears to listen to their local ads, they damn well better give us local content as well. If they talk about broader topics, do it from a local perspective.
This is why I stopped listening to Air America; no local content.
Posted by: litlnemo | January 09, 2008 at 05:32 AM
Thankfully there is KGO! The 7-10 pm show is pablum. I will not listen to syndicated babble. I wasn't a fan of FS, but now I will miss him.
Posted by: AprilMayJune | January 09, 2008 at 08:55 AM
I don't think they intend to keep the syndicated show, it's just filler until something better comes along. It's obvious KIRO is committed to local content and would prefer to have all local content. This just goes to show how unwanted Frank Shiers was towards the end of his stint.
Posted by: AuthenticAndrew | January 09, 2008 at 09:49 AM
Well I enjoyed Frank's show. I looked forward to listening every night.
I wish him well.
I won't be listening to any syndicated show.
Posted by: LadyJane | January 09, 2008 at 06:49 PM
It took me awhile to get used to Frank Shires. I can take him or leave him. He certainly wasn't the worst host they have had on KIRO. BUT THEY replaced him with the HACK PHIL HENDRIE. What are they thinking? That guy is funny for about 2 shows then it is the same joke over and over and over ..............
Posted by: derrell | January 09, 2008 at 09:28 PM
Even though i consider myself more of a lefty, i enjoyed listening to Frank. Luke whatever is boring. I miss you already Frank.
