Another great year ahead for the self-proclaimed Most Popular Talk Host In Seattle and all of us.
We got a press release today announcing: Dori Monson, veteran Seattle talker, pain in the ass, jock talker, Gutter Helmet devotee, soccer mom, and Eastlake Force To Contend With has extended his contract with KIRO to continue as host of The Dori Monson Show (KIRO- m-f, 12– 3p).
Monson's voice takes up 61% of actual airtime on the station if you count (and everyone does) the commercials for male enhancement products, and TILA Mortgage.
Here's a quote from the tortured presser (who writes this shit????):
Dori Monson tackles the news like a Seahawks linebacker sacking an opposing quarterback. From news to politics to pop culture and beyond, Dori creates a talk show that no other host can replicate. One hour he's talking to Puget Sound's most significant news makers and the next hour his listeners are calling in on the subtleties of Las Vegas or a local "clothing optional beach." On the air, Dori approaches social issues with a hands-off attitude, much the same way he treats any type of vegetable at the dinner table. He has a nose for fiscal government accountability and an affinity for cheesy pop music songs.
Dori, The 50,000 Watt Ego. He treasures a smaller, more-efficient government the way he treasures a classic Tony DeFranco and the DeFranco Family song. Dori's show is the T-bone steak of talk-radio: it's sizzling, it's juicy and it's always cooked just right.
(photo: DeFranco Family; Dori is kneeling)
Last year we took comments in long-form from Dori's many fans, and put them all in one big post. Read: Dori, Dori,
Let's tell Dori in our comments how hap-hap-happy we all are that he's not going to Bolivia for the rest of his career, or hasn't had a laryngectomy.

I'm fucking depressed.

Well,
Going by the amount of play Dori gets here on this blog it isn't a surprise.
Even the ones that swear they hate Dori still listen to his show to rip him on this board.
Posted by: PugetSound | October 08, 2007 at 07:59 PM
Me, too, Sarge. But, then, I don't listen to him much. Have to say much because there are times he takes on some interesting issues. If he'd acquire some integrity, he could be a lot better.
But, then, he'd lose his audience, now wouldn't he?

Seder in for Malloy tonight. Seder's excellent.

The local talk jock they love to hate on this blog.. Part of me says too funny !! and the other part says so what ?
Posted by: KS | October 08, 2007 at 08:34 PM
That T-bone steak crap is old..that was part of the last testimonial they posted. Rump roast, maybe.
Soooo glad to be living too far away to get KIRO on my radio...

Dori competes daily against very tough midday competition from Medved, Schultz and Hannity. It takes a talented host to survive in that cutthroat arena. Bravo, Dori.
Posted by: bobo | October 08, 2007 at 10:47 PM
Talented? How about one who appeals to lowest common denominator? That might be another word for talent these days, I guess.
Posted by: joanie | October 08, 2007 at 10:53 PM
It takes tremendous verbal skill to hold the attention of an audience for more than a few minutes. If anybody doubts it, plug a mic into your computer and start talking. Like 99% of us you will run out of things to say very quickly and start babbling like an idiot. Dori is a gem.
Posted by: bobo | October 08, 2007 at 11:07 PM
I would take him more serious if he did not whore himself out so much.
Bet he won't take his new Jag to Aamco (hacks), will ya Dori?

Methinks the King is vain. Sportscaster "Moose" Monson is obviously using a far older picture on his KIRO showpage than the aging, triple-chinned champ that graces this Blatherwatch post. Many readers ask- 008, why the sportscaster moniker for the Dorrmeister? My reply is that he doesn't deserve the title of talkhost, since his litle bitch Phil insulates him from having to take any truly antogonistic or crtical callers. Have you folks noticed that? He always seems to get this bland assortment of agreeing, nebbish callers, certainly not anyone who really goes toe to toe with him. A real talk host isn't afraid of real debate, even an insulting or hostile caller or two. Sean Hannity, Rush, Savage, even Mike Webb and Bernie Ward take such calls. But not our little man Dori. Not big enough for it. Can't handle it. Dori, you're a sportscaster. Don't deserve to be called anything more.

We all have a motor mouth in our extended family, someone who makes everything about themselves, loves hearing themselves speak loudly and they won't shut the fuck up, not even to chew their food, and usualy they're women, but once in a while a guy displays this quality. That is Dori Monson.
Posted by: Andrew | October 08, 2007 at 11:42 PM
No vegetables. T-bone steak. Dori'll have a coronary before he finishes out his contract.

If I may, I would like to sum up the thoughts of the Dori-haters...
Dori does not think like them, and since they are intelectually insecure, they have to hate him. It's like when a racist hates a black person because all they know is "he ain't like me." It frightens them. Dori-haters are also angry he isn't more politically correct. They've bought into the lie that if all of your views aren't politically correct, then you must hate others. Example, political correcness dictates you must believe that homelessness and poverty not your fault. If you stray from that view, and believe that in most cases, those things arise from a lifetime of poor choices, then you are accused of hating poor people. One poster on here, who I know is a hypocrite, always says he hates Dori because he treats others poorly, yet in many of his posts, he... yep, you guessed it... treats other posters who do not agree with him poorly. Bashing them, ridiculing them, degrading them, worse than I have ever heard Dori do.
So in summary, on the one hand I think it's sad some people are frightened by, and hate people who think differently than them, but on the other hand I have contempt for them for being some of the biggest hypocrites I have ever read.
Posted by: DT | October 09, 2007 at 04:53 AM
SOMEONE has apparently shown his true colors.
As for Dori...I believe I can speak for him when I say THANK YOU everyone at BlatherWatch for all your help in my achieving this honor.
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 04:54 AM
I always feel a little better after saying, as I have many times:
Dori is an ass.

"Dori competes daily against very tough midday competition from Medved, Schultz and Hannity. It takes a talented host to survive in that cutthroat arena. Bravo, Dori."
WRONG Bobo, those shows are all national, he's got it made in the shade as the only local guy in the mix...

>>On the one hand I think it's sad some people are frightened by, and hate people who think differently than them, but on the other hand I have contempt for them for being some of the biggest hypocrites I have ever read.<<
Couldn't agree more, DT.

Yes, Dori is an ass. A true Seattle-bred ass.
I complained about him in his first year, and I still hate him. He puts the stupid in talk radio.
Posted by: disgrunt | October 09, 2007 at 06:58 AM
...and LAUGHS all the way to the bank. He's a genius at his craft and has pretty much manipulated folks into either loving him or hating him...either way -he wins!
He just doesn't want to be ignored.
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 07:06 AM
To me, Mike Siegel was just as good as Dori if not better. Neither have great delivery or radio voices, but both are informative & smart in their own way. Both were former liberals who became social liberal/economic conservatives.
Why is it that Dori is #1 and Mike is off the air?
Posted by: wutitiz | October 09, 2007 at 07:22 AM
wutitiz: because I think he was too vitriolic without the evidence to back up some of his claims (i.e. Seattle mayor accusations, while he was at KVI?). I believe that followed him through the rest of his career. And his assocation and seeming support of conspiracy kooks to some extent probably damaged his creditability. That w/be my call on it.
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 07:33 AM
Yep, two former liberals who became conservative. Flip floppers? They targeted their audiences well. Too hard to master liberals so they both moved to the lazy side of the discussion where hate talk works and people (baa baa) follow instead of think.
No one has called 710DORI stupid. He knows the kind of people he appeals to and he'll continue the kind of talk that wags their wooly tails.
Posted by: joanie | October 09, 2007 at 07:55 AM
Dori is annoying and anyone who thinks he is a good sportscaster spends too much time at Storm games. What he does bring to the table is the ability to expose our uber-liberal money wasting corrupt local government and for that he deserves kudos.
Posted by: Brian | October 09, 2007 at 08:39 AM
Who said he is a GOOD sportscaster? Not me. I call him a sportscaster because that's what he started as, and I'm sure he thinks he's moved way beyond that, but he hasn't really. If you can't hang with a tough crowd in the call department and only take creampuff calls you can whack out of the park, served up by Phil, his screener, you are no more htan the lousy sportscaster you started as.
Posted by: Tommy008 | October 09, 2007 at 08:48 AM
Mike Siegel lost all credibility as a serious talk show host when he spent a year promoting space aliens and UFOs on a midnight radio show.
Posted by: bobo | October 09, 2007 at 09:04 AM
ohh poor Dori, he is misunderstood....Hey DT, Dori is fatuous, reason enough to dislike him intently.
Posted by: coiler | October 09, 2007 at 09:06 AM
To me he doesn't even qualify as a sportscaster. It makes me sick that he's doing the Seahawks pregame, I can't bear to listen. That weird vally-girl inflection he has in his voice simply makes me want to vomit.
Posted by: Brian | October 09, 2007 at 09:08 AM
I don't think he's fatuous; for his height I think he is probably close to the right weight. :o)
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 09:09 AM
I agree, Brian, about the pregame, but do you notice that almost every time a nfl jock or nfl announcer is a guest in the pregame they never greet or address dori by name but they greet all the ex-jocks on Dori's pregame show by name. Moose Monson is the Rodney Dangerfield of pregame- no respect and dis jobs from the guests every week.
Posted by: Tommy008 | October 09, 2007 at 09:58 AM
I will tell you one thing. Dori is hated and feared around Eastlake. It is about power. He takes advantage of relationships with his new best friends in management. He still tattles and goes directly to Arquette with complaints against other KIRO employees. He has such a cynical view of people in general, maybe it's based on his small stature, but he thinks most people are beneath him if not "garbage."
Posted by: jooby | October 09, 2007 at 10:18 AM
I seriously doubt it. Smacks of jealousy to me.
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 10:22 AM
Tattling to management is a career-long habit of Dori's.

Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 10:56 AM
I miss getting the news from KIRO but I turn my radio off or to KOMO....although they make me gag...at noon. I vote with my dial. Wish more would do the same and stop talking about "him".
Posted by: jamesb | October 09, 2007 at 11:04 AM
Duff has a crush on Dori now. Look at him chivalrously come to Dori's defense. Look out Dori!
Posted by: Andrew | October 09, 2007 at 11:46 AM
That was weird that dale carnegie would be Dori's butt buddy
Posted by: coiler | October 09, 2007 at 12:38 PM
Dori is in weepy/compassionate mode as he interviews the skydiving company spokeswoman about the employee plane crash. Absolutely sickening.
Posted by: Tommy008 | October 09, 2007 at 01:13 PM
...but 'riveting' radio isn't it
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 01:16 PM
He sky dived once as a radio stunt so now they're like family. Ya gotta understand.
Posted by: Andrew | October 09, 2007 at 02:06 PM
...how many times have you sky dived from that particular venue?
ergo: 'he wins' !
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 02:09 PM
We all have a motor mouth in our extended family, someone who makes everything about themselves, loves hearing themselves speak loudly and they won't shut the fuck up, not even to chew their food, and usualy they're women, but once in a while a guy displays this quality. That is Dori Monson.
Posted by: Andrew | October 08, 2007 at 11:42 PM
..and YOU must be the esteemed representative in this regard of your family (and sounding somewhat sexist to boot!)
Posted by: Duffman | October 09, 2007 at 02:19 PM
1) sky diving is retarded 2) I'm actualy quite reserved 3) stop being such a dork.
Posted by: Andrew | October 09, 2007 at 02:38 PM
Does it not speak to his masculinity, or lack of it, that Dori has been unable to father a male child?
Posted by: Upton | October 09, 2007 at 04:14 PM
You're such a kiss-ass, Duffman.
Posted by: sarge | October 09, 2007 at 04:14 PM
How can a major market have such pathetic talent? We are on of the most well read regions. Maybe nobody cares about the talent. I love it on Sunday when Moyer or Wyman will take a swipe at how uninformed Dori is. The pregame used to be about football now its all about Dori
Posted by: Rich | October 09, 2007 at 04:20 PM
I get a happy moment every day when I change the station from KIRO to 1090 when Dori begins his daily whine.
Posted by: AprilMayJune | October 09, 2007 at 04:31 PM
Rich, I would return your radio if you can only get 710 AM on it.
Posted by: DT | October 09, 2007 at 04:37 PM
Dori is a hypocrite (that's not news). Has anyone else noticed that he's a social Darwinist -- sink or swim on your own and only the fit survive -- and YET...
He's doing a mortgage commercial where he blames other mortgage for luring unsuspecting people into "toxic mortgages"?
Which is it, Dori? Are people sometimes the victim of circumstance or are they simply making "poor choices" and it's all their own fault; i.e., such as a baby's choice to be born drug-addicted to druggie parents?
Posted by: Dana | October 09, 2007 at 05:56 PM
I have listented to 710 for soooo long now I think its become a bad habit!! Anybody know of a 12 step program? Hi I'm Rich and I am powerless over Dori
